I stayed here for one night but wished it had been longer. The charming proprietor (Roy Copeland, a notable jazz musician) invited me for tea in his office/study when I arrived slightly before check-in time. The delightful manageress Lynne was keen to ensure a warm welcome and that everything I needed was available to me. This is not just a Bed and Breakfast though, it is Roy Copeland’s home and I was made to feel like a valued house guest rather than a paying customer. My room, the Somerton, was a generous sized dual aspect room, with both aspects looking out onto the beautifully curated and tended (2 acres plus rill and pond) gardens. The huge bathroom had everything one could need, with a large bath and drenching shower, good quality towels, robes, facecloths and toiletries. The bed linen and mattress were of the highest quality and I slept soundly, awaking to birdsong and utter peace. Breakfast (I ordered the night before) offered a wide range to satisfy healthy (fruit, yoghurt etc.) and hungry (full breakfast) guests. I had the full English breakfast which was perfectly cooked with the highest quality ingredients. Mr. Copeland was busily doing a crossword over breakfast when I came into the spacious breakfast room (a piano in the corner hinted of musical soirées) and it underpinned the sense that I was a guest not a customer. If you are going to Somerset, do stay here - it is a delight from the moment you set foot onto the grounds and whenever you leave, it will be too soon.
