We stayed here for a night. The hotel itself is very olde worlde, creaking floorboards and old beams. It could do with a bit of a makeover, especially the bathroom which did look a bit tired. The breakfast was very good , with plenty of choice and all staff were very friendly.Car park is 15 pound per night.

There where a number of issues which may have been related to shortage of staff, or poorly motivated staff. Shower in one room and toilet in another not working properly. Dirty crockery piled in a corridor most of one day and overnight. Reception staff unfriendly.

This hotel is the real deal. It is old and creaky and full of Tudor charm. It is centrally located for everything that you want to do around town, within walking distance of the train station and all the touristy spots. The room and bed were comfortable and a decent size. It does need a bit of sprucing up, but all in all I enjoyed my stay here.

After reading the reviews I was quite apprehensive about staying here. My partner had booked this hotel for my birthday and we were just staying the one night. We arrived quite early as we wanted a walk around before checking in. Surprisingly we did actually get parked - I suppose we were lucky! The car park is quite tight and would probably hold around 20 cars at most. So I would either book a spot (if you can) or book a spot at the local NCP in advance. Lovely large entrance with plenty of places to sit. I felt it a bit of a waste of space? Maybe something else to utilise the space better.. But we were greeted at the reception by Tristan and Sam. Absolutely lovely gents! We were told the history of the building and local places to visit. We checked in to our room which was up a flight of stairs (I'm not sure if there is a lift, if you struggle with stairs). Room was ok, and looked over the car park - suppose it would be more quiet that the road side as the windows can't be updated being such an old building. Floors weren't even and neither was the ceiling but that's the charm, that's history and that's the building - and it was awesome. When we were out and about someone had said to us the hotel may be closing before Xmas for a refurb, which I would say it needs it. The walls and windows being wonky is part of the charm and character. The stained carpets, headboard and shower floor is not. Bar was well stocked and the lad serving was lovely.. and had great hair! I definitely saw a ghost in my room, don't care what anyone says! All in all, I would stay again but after the refurb. Staff are lovely, location is brilliant, car park isn't great and nor are the carpets.

Hotel is outdated. Beautiful building but rooms are musty, poor ventilation. Bed far too soft. No water left in room and didn't want to risk drinking from the cold tap as everything seems so dated. Not seen a lick of paint in a long time, lots of scuffs and scratches. Went for a drink in the bar at 6.30pm but it was not open. Rooms need refurbishing. Floorboards very squeaky so you hear everyone that walks past your room or in the room above. No plug socket by the side of the bed

On arrival the car park was full , I rang to ask where to park no reply After parking on the street I went to reception, joined a line of people and eventually got a room The hotel is old and shabby and smells damp and fusty , my room was like a shoe box , the carpet thread bare and the vent in the wall hanging off , I often travel on business and this was the WORST hotel I have stayed in years it’s a dump There is no wonder they call it Shakespeare he probably laid the carpet before he left !

I booked our stay direct with the hotel for our wedding anniversary. I assumed that for the price I paid we would be staying in the characteristic hotel as shown in the pictures, however we were sent across the carpark to a separate building. Sam on the front desk checked us in, told us there were no car park spaces but we seen quite a few on our walk over the car park after he had sent us 10 minutes down the road to an ncp car park. He gave us no imformation regarding dining, breakfast, house keeping etc and told us that the better rooms were on a first come first serve basis. The location was excellent, however Sam on the front desk needs some lessons in customer service and therefore will not be recomending this hotel when friends and family come and stay with us.

We booked this hotel for my birthday. We got to the room, cold, tv didn't work and tired. We moved to a different room, nicecand big but cold. No heating. The staff were really polite and the breakfast was lovely. It would be nice to have a biscuit in your room with your coffee. Great location, parking good. Wouldn't stay again but put the stay down to experience.

This is a good hotel but let down by the fact that it needs to be completely redecorated. The place has clearly not been touched in years. Staff were friendly an helpful. In its current state of repair I would not go back out of choice but if it was the only hotel available would use it

Writing this review in our "room" right now attempting to use the almost non existent WIFI. As Gold members we were allocated probably their smallest room ... no upgrade offered. The bathroom is a treat ... cold water tap at sink gives either cold or hot water at random, shower doesn't have enough pressure to wash and bath is so slippery you can't stand in it to take a shower anyway. Toilet cistern takes at least 5 minutes to refill so allow for that with toilet usage. This hotel is closing for major renovations ... it should be closed already, can't believe they charged us to stay here. It's a shame as it's an incredibly historic building full of history ...and terrible plumbing.

Lovely hotel, sadly in need of a bit of TLC, we had a priveledge room the bath seal was hanging off and the screen had a lot of limescale on it, the toilet flush was loose, only one of the 2 TVs worked the other the plug wouldn’t reach the socket. One TV would have been fine The hotel is in a lovely place very central, staff were amazing, Would visit again once it’s been renovated

AVOID…This hotel is meant to be a 4 star but it doesn’t even deserve one at the moment.. The staff are very unwelcoming and the rooms are really shabby, our tv didn’t work, they pointed to a printed sheet of instructions to fix it and if this didn’t work, then thee was nothing they could do. We overheard some staff talking about the hotel closing for 2 years, so that would explain the poor service and standards, yet they still expect full price from loyal customers, well no Mercure hotels for us! They spoilt what was meant to be a birthday treat. My advice, find somewhere else.

Beautiful hotel, decent room, we upgraded. Nice toiletries, but very loud extractor system outside our bedroom window. Breakfast was OK, would have preferred a made to order but overall a fairly good stay. No information provided regarding check out or Breakfast times and the TV didn't work properly.

The staff were very pleasant and accommodating. The room was lovely we stayed in the old part of the hotel with lovely beams. we were surprised to find air conditioning which was great as it was very warm weather, also a fridge, iron & ironing board. Breakfast was nice though the eggs being kept under heated lamps dried up (would have preferred cooked to odder). we felt that the carparking was way to expensive at £15 for an overnight stay. however over all it was a lovely stay.
