Makino is a place where you can truly feel peace and quiet (we visited in early May). This village is quite a distance from Kyoto, about a 1 hour and 20-minute train ride from Kyoto Station, running alongside Lake Biwa and the mountains, offering stunning views. The hotel is conveniently located a 10-minute walk from Makino Station. It sits right on the lake, literally 10 meters away, and has its own private beach. Everything was wonderful and clean, though there are no public baths. However, I noticed a smell in my room, perhaps from the carpet or old furniture. The hotel is 30 years old, built in 1995. The Japanese breakfast was hearty and varied. We enjoyed watching the sunrise from our lake-view room. Nearby, there are well-maintained campsites (they weren't disruptive at all, with few cars and mostly Japanese families), costing 5000 yen per day for a minivan, and cheaper for smaller vehicles. You can find more information on the Makino website. Also, there are many summer activities, so it's a good idea to research locations and operating hours in advance.

Nice hotel just by the Biwa lake. Big enough room for two people. Fast check in and friendly service. No public Onsen available in the hotel which is a minus. Lake view is nice. Dinner was a bit of disappointment. Breakfast was good. Sunrise supposed to be beautiful but weather was not permitted.

This hotel exceeded my expectations. The view was beautiful, and the room was surprisingly nice, much better than I had imagined. Everything was clean and comfortable, and the staff provided excellent service. I would happily stay here again.

A gem at Biwako. The wooden room is very cozy and of larger size than regular Japanese hotels. The hotel also got their own private beach.

Really enjoy the days stayed in this hotel, the view is excellent even on cloudy day…. Unfortunately cannot see the sunrise! The room is spacious that we can walk freely in room! Microwave is available for shared use! Enjoy!

The location was great having the beach just next to the hotel. The stars at night and the sun rise there made our trip special. I like the room with the woody design.

Located in Takashima City, on the west side of Lake Biwa, this hotel is a convenient stopover for cyclists doing the lake circuit. It's about 180 km and a 3-hour drive from Kansai Airport. The rooms are clean, and the service is good.

This hotel has the best hotel receptionist we met on our 6 week traveling through Japan.
Our bicycle was broken, she was very patient with the language barrier between us.
She insisted we brought the bike insde the hotel as outside it was too hot.
She went collect plastic gloves, carried our bike chain (which was very greasy), helped 10 minutes to work on the chain.
She told us she worked in a bikeshop before she started working in the hotel.
An amazing lady!!

If you haven't booked a shuttle service in advance, the hotel is a 10-minute walk from Makino Station. Breakfast is provided during your stay; it's simple and delicious. A microwave is available for use in the hotel. The hotel is located next to Lake Biwa; you can take a walk along the lake and watch the sunrise right outside the door.

The hotel boasts a convenient location facing Lake Biwa and features its own private beach, perfect for a relaxing morning stroll. Breakfast and dinner are delicious. The only drawback is the lack of a hot spring bath.

I had a personal issue, but I experienced a room key error and contacted the hotel. They responded quickly, making for a very fulfilling night.
At the time, I was cycling around Lake Biwa counter-clockwise, and stayed overnight on the first day. The weather was bad, with rain and extremely cold temperatures, so I was incredibly relieved to find the hotel safe and sound. I'll definitely stay there again if I cycle around Lake Biwa in the future!
Also, regarding breakfast on the second day, the person who served it recommended a health-conscious cocktail, which helped improve my performance in the future. I'd like to thank that person for their recommendation!

There are not many choices on this side of Lake Biwa, so we came to this one-bed, two-dining restaurant. The food is so-so, but unfortunately there isn't much food nearby. Breakfast is okay. Normal Western breakfast options have no special extras. The most special thing is that there is a large beach outside the hotel. I was going to see the sunrise, but the weather was bad and I was a little disappointed. Overall it was neat and comfortable.
