Lovely place to relax, you can see whales, dolphins from pool deck and rooms We took the transfer and it was great even taking us twice on last day, once for the luggage then back for a swim in pool and sunbath, quick beer and back to the airport for final check in, fabulous service. Tina in reception, looked after us, booked dinners if we were not eating in hotel, Even arranged a special dinner for our anniversary, special thanks. Loved the daily news delivered to our door each morning.

Being the only resort on the island of Niue, if you would like a comfortable hotel stay this is for you! The rooms were lovely and spacious with comfy beds and we had wonderful views from the Ocean view room, being able to watch whales and dolphins from the balcony was pretty special! The pools are a fantastic way to unwind and cool off, the food at the pool bar was great and a good variety of options for both drinks and food. You can take in the sunset from the many decks, whilst sipping on a coconut cocktail and in the right season (Aug-Sep) watch the whales swimming by and breaching.. There are daily activities hosted by the resort with locals giving you a great insight to Island life. They also host great entertainment evenings with local musicians and dance. It looses a star purely on the food at the restaurant but mostly because we are not really buffet people and are fairly spoilt with where we live on the food front. The staff though were truly wonderful and so welcoming. Easy getting from and to the airport and they can help you book excursions and rentals etc making your trip hassle free. Would highly recommend for anyone needing a relaxing break and if you don't want to go self-catering this is pretty much the only option!

Was our second visit to the Matavai. Stayed on a ground floor room overlooking the pools this time. Rooms were great and staff awesome. Wifi is very intermittent in the room (worked 30% of the time) so wife had to make regular visits to the reception/restaurant area so she could connect to work. This should be better as advertised internet as part of room. Food was okay but we ventured into town most nights to mix up the options. Great shuttle for people to get to airport etc. Would stay again if ever going back as a good location and awesome whale views right from the deck!

Our second stay at the Matavai and a good relaxing place to stay. Cheerful staff, great outlook from room and with happy hour and light bites available at the pool bar, it's possible to have a very low cost holiday. Having toured the islands scenic treats previously, we simply wanted to relax and unwind, for this it was perfect. Whales swimming by made for an interesting pre-occupation.

The only resort in Niue with a great pool complex and restaurant and great views. Rooms are great but soundproofing between floors is not good. So as not to hear the movements and sounds of the people above you, try for an upstairs room if physically able.

This is the only resort on the island. The place is lovely and the staff were very accommodating. The pools were lovely and the views from the main deck are spectacular. We stayed in the main older block. The rooms had their own balcony and were very clean and tidy and overlooked the gardens, part of the pool and obviously the view. The food was OK, and quite expensive for what it was, but I suppose it's relative to it's remote location. Happy hour 5-9 which was very reasonable.

I proposed to my partner here and Lisa and her team made sure everything I needed was provided and they went the extra mile for us. They also gave us a gift to celebrate this special occasion. The team here are very professional, friendly and helpful. We highly recommend Matavai Resort as a place to celebrate any special occasion and an excellent place to stay and dine. We were able to spot a whale from our deck. We will definitely stay here again.

Matavai was an excellent resort with friendly staff, excellent food, although a little expensive, but considering it virtually all has to come from NZ I guess it is understandable. Because of the isolation of the resort to get around you really have to hire a rental car etc. Another time I would avoid July as it is known to be windy and sure was the first 3 days there. At the end of the day make the most of happy hour with beer at $7.00 as against Heineken which fortunately ran out a $12.00 A toasted sandwich and chips @ $21.00 was a bit steep. By and large I would recommend Matavai as it was country number 62 I have been to.

We stayed 14 days in the studio apartments a few k down the road. These are ideal if you want more privacy and you have your own view of the beach. Has a pool..aircons really good! And basically it's awesome..running water, king bed you can pull apart. Marina was awesome, gave us towels and cleaned our room. Place is clean and spacious. The main resort had friendly people working there. These studios don't come with free breakfast..as I was told by the travel agent that they did. Lucky I confirmed 2 weeks before departure so you can bring your own food. Book yourself as it will be way cheaper. Save thousands. Niue is pure and clean. The people are very abundant and giving. Fakaaue lahi Love you Niue xo

we have visited Niue 3 times before and this is our fourth. We have stayed in various places but the only resort on Niue is Matavai. The food and service is great, the pool and deck fantastic. The staff friendly. We stayed in a deluxe ocean view room this trip and i would recommend the superior ocean view rooms instead (which we have stayed in previously. the superior ocean are single level and just as comfortable) From the deluxe ocean view the view in the room was of a great big tree in front. From the bed we couldnt see the ocean due to the tree. we had to sit on the balcony facing the right to get ocean views. We were also upstairs and had to walk up two flights of stairs to get to the room. When we checked in they gave us the wrong room (a garden view) and we had to get that sorted which was a little tense. The room was clean and very nice and comfortable. The roosters are an issue around the whole island, wherever you are staying. The breakfast is the same every day and has a good variety but the canned fruit disappointing. But it was included in room rate. The bed had terrible movement. Everytime either of us rolled over the other one was disturbed. For the price i would definitely expect a better bed - i mean it costs the same in transport to freight a decent mattress as a poor one. The tango mango is the only cocktail i would recommend. the others were a bit sickly lolly water, and the alcohol content in them all seemed almost non existent. The best is the chilled coconuts. The coffee was good. The best meal was the 3 course option on our first night. i would definitely stay here again. the umu buffet and entertainment are fantastic. The deck and pool area are absolutely stunning. We saw dolphins and whales in the bay in front daily. The beautiful blue water is gorgeous and the sunsets absolutely beautiful.

We stayed in one of the separate apartment/motel units. There were no staff there, but the staff at the main resort just up the road were very friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious and had a great view. It was really good having our own kitchen, although the utensils provided were basic (no can opener, scissors, salt and pepper etc). We would definitely stay again

What a stunning place to stay. We stayed in the villa’s down the road that are part of the resort. Our rooms were clean and comfortable and had everything we needed to self cater. We had 2 adjoining rooms to cater for our large family of 6, we also had a pool there and had full access to the resort facilities eg pools, bar, restaurant when we wanted. A stunning view from our room topped it off. All staff were super friendly and helpful. We would definitely go back.

This is the only resort on the Island, providing a premier experience for visitors. We stayed at the Apartments as they were cheaper and allowed us to have some simple cooking facilities, with the pool and access to the main resort and staff. The Apartment is situated 1.5km from the main resort. Walking between in the sites is doable, but not ideal. It is far easier to hire a car ( that is perfect for exploring the island). The apartments themselves are perfect, they all face the ocean and have comfortable beds, ensuite bathrooms with everything supplied. Pool towels can be collected from the main resort for a small returnable deposit. Rooms are serviced daily and towels and bedding is changed on a regular basis. The cooking facilities are two small hobs, microwave and small fridge. The apartments have access to a freezer drawer and laundry facilities ($5 for washing machine, $5 for dryer), BBQ and a pool. The pool is smaller than the main resort with sunlounges, tables and seating, but is quiet and perfectly in the sun all day. Arrival to Niue is easy, with the resort shuttle bus there ready to take you to the main resort for a welcome drink, cool refreshing towel and views while waiting for your keys. Luggage is delivered to rooms or apartment and when ready shuttle bus will take you to the apartments. A welcome meeting with a free drink is soon after arrival and is well worth attending. Firstly, the Island is small and you will see people over and over again. The meeting is a great opportunity to meet fellow travellers and hear about the customs etc of the island. The main resort is rooms, 2 pools, pool bar and Dolphin restaurant. The pool bar has a swim up bar and fantastic light foods and cocktails. Happy hour at 5pm for slighly cheaper cocktails and final views before sundown is another great way to meet fellow travellers. This is lovely resort that caters to all your needs.

Everything was 5 star. Our studio unit, the comfortable bed, the view from our unit and the amazing staff who were so obliging and helpful. Was great having a rental car and being able to explore all the island. We enjoyed the golf course. Wish we had read more on the geological history of the island before we went.
