Hale 'Ohu Bed & Breakfast

A very cozy little homestay with three rooms. The sisters take care of everything together. They renovated all the rooms after they took over here last year. All the facilities are brand new and the rooms are very spacious. As the flight was delayed for 4 hours, it was already more than 8 o'clock in the evening to the hotel. They also called Ctrip to remind us that the front desk would leave work at 6 o'clock, and attached a detailed self-check-in guide. Follow the instructions and everything goes well. Stayed for two nights. Fresh juice, banana cakes, fruit bowls and homemade puddings were available in the refrigerator. Yogurt and coconut cakes were provided for breakfast the next day. Each room was equipped with a microwave, drip coffee machine and hot water bottle. The banana cake is a big piece, and I only finished breakfast in two days. So there is no chance to taste the coconut cake at all, a pity. Because it is newly decorated, the bed is equipped with a power socket, and there are two USB ports, voltage and converter problems are all solved. This is the third time we have come to the Big Island. We have already experienced at least six hotels and homestays of all levels. This is really rare in the local area. The only downside is that the soundproofing is really not good. The uncle next door is snoring like thunder. So earplugs at the head of the room can be considered a solution.
Kilauea Lodge and Restaurant

I give Kilauea Lodge a 5/5 until today when my husband & I were packing up to leave. The lock system for the doors is a code that is entered to open the door from a built in lock system linked to the door. I had just showered & was packing my bags & my husband was showering. The lock on the door was unlocked & the door was opened by a staff member. There was no knock or announcement of this happening. I was startled & clarified about check out being 11am. The staff member stated they were told to move stuff in our room. I questioned that & they then realized it was the wrong room. I was shaken by this incident & immediately let their text system know. Of course they apologized & offered free breakfast. We were not interested in that, we just wanted to make sure this unfortunate incident never happened again. We were also told the GM would be notified. Staff members are trained to knock & announce when opening a door (even when knowing the room is vacated; which our room was not). This did not happen. We suggested a lock should be set up on the inside of the door for the occupants to use to avoid this accidental incident. We hope this precaution will be installed.

Here's my review: Stayed recently over the Easter weekend (4 nights) Bottom line: A great place to stay as a base for exploring the Natl. Volcanic Park for solo or couples - which is 5 min away.....This is more of a hostel type experience in an older house with shared bathrooms but a great economical stay. You may see some others registered guests sharing the kitchen and Frig etc. I stayed in room 311 (the upper part of 3 levels). Anyway room was good - adequate for the stay in the upper Rain Forest (4000 ft) Constructive Feed Back - Suggestions for Mgmt. : (property co) #1) Front Door Lock - worked poorly and hard to manage (get to work) - either re-key or put some graphite in there #2) Better trash pickup - piled up after awhile #3) Paper towels would be nice for kitchen area Pro: Super close to VNP main entrance + 5 min drive to Volcano General stores (2) Tips: Very good Wood fired pizzas (Ohelo Cafe) - although sticklers for COVID protocols (as most places this is over - but to each of their own)- a very good place with good food - close 7pm (I also like the general store next door - I went every morning for Kona Coffee - very good $2). Suggested trails in VNP : (most do) : Kilauea IkI Crater trail : 4 miles round trip - do as a loop (park in lot 2nd lot) : Chain of Craters Round - From rain forest to Sea Level - Sea Arch (suggestion - continue on another 1/4 mile from Sea Arch and visit Coconut Grove planted in the 1960s - I thought cool... :NIght viewing of lava - (do 9 - 11 pm) - 1 mile each way + suggestion ; bring a pair of binoculars -makes a huge diff in viewing night lave lake
Volcano Acres Ranch B&B

We would highly recommend this bed and breakfast. It is minutes away from the Volcano National Park and not far from other attractions like Hilo or Papakolea Green Sand Beach. My husband and I stayed in the Ohia Ranch room. The location was quiet and private with lots of animals (goats, sheep, donkey, ducks, hens, etc.). It was fun to sit out on the balcony and watch the animals (or go down and pet them). The king bed was very comfortable and had a heated blanket on it as an option. There are lots of windows for great sunshine. Every morning, Theresa would bring a delicious breakfast to the room per your request/order. There is a table/chairs in the room to eat; plus the balcony has a small table. The breakfast omelets were incredible. Theresa also has many extras in the room like beach towels, robes, slippers, picnic basket, heating rack for towels and drinks. The information book had lots of ideas of where to go along with restaurant suggestions. We found all of them incredible. She also sent detailed instructions to get there. Overall, Theresa was a warm and wonderful host who helped us with any questions and offered great suggestions.

Anniversary trip of a lifetime! Quiet, quaint and absolutely beautiful cabin! We just thoroughly enjoyed our days here so very much. It was the most peaceful restful and romantic of all our days in the islands. Extremely busy hard working power couple with 4 kids actually had time to purely enjoy solitude and rest! It was amazing even the DVD of a James Bond we watched one morning. Meticulously prepared meals and they were beyond fresh and delicious. Breakfast, fruit platters and wine cheese and meat charcuterie was served with absolute artist presentation with flowers! Our anniversary was made so perfect especially because of our innkeeper John. Making sure everything was perfect when we arrived and convincing us that we should go see the evening stars and volcano that very first evening because the weather was perfect and he was so very right!! We followed every suggestion and his map. Had a fabulous time and didn’t miss a thing!! Cannot speak highly enough of how very important he was - the frosting on a delicious cake, but he made it a complete masterpiece. Forever grateful from the couple who waited 23 years to really enjoy a honeymoon!!

Accommodation on the Big Island of Hawaii is very expensive. It is difficult to find a good and cheap hotel near the Volcano National Park. The only choice is the B&B. Do not think that the B&B is a single-family villa. This is not a home in Australia or Hawaii. Very expensive, the price you see, you can only rent a room in the villa, the kitchen and living room are to be shared with others. This lodge is less than a hundred years old. It is difficult to find. The place to check in is not together with the lodge, and you must see the check-in time. If you miss it, people will get off work. The staff will give you a map, clear. Tell you where the hut is, or give him the navigation directly. He will help you enter the coordinates, which is easy to find. The hut is about 1 km from the studio and drives very fast. The car can be parked in the open space at the door, the cabin is very clean, the living room is heated and the ceiling fan is on. It seems that the temperature difference between the mountains and the forest is very high. There is also a Chinese family who stays together. It’s just that everyone can chat and not feel restrained. The room is not big, the toiletries in the bathroom are very complete. Fortunately, the upstairs room is on our family. No one shared the bathroom. I have already said that this house has been said for a hundred years. It can be kept like this. It is already very good. There are supermarkets and restaurants nearby, you have to drive out, the price of the supermarket is a bit high, it is better to solve the dinner directly in the restaurant, breakfast can be bought in the supermarket, so the kitchen of the wooden house is useless. When you check out, just throw the key directly into the door mailbox and someone will clean it.
