The Sloop Inn

Sorry to say, bad cooking! And staff seemed stressed by the amount of customers. Lovely spot but sadly I couldn't recommend this pub. I used to stay here and it was great - laid back, good value, so relaxing - but it seems to have turned into yet another gastro pub (but with bad food).

Wide menu and great food. Traditional English pub setting with a real pub atmosphere. Friendly and accommodating mature staff. Still very busy being Feburary during off-peak season. Very happy. Also, have great coffee which is important after a meal. Thank you!

We received a warm and friendly welcome from Jamie and the team . We had lunch - the fish pie was delicious and my husband had haddock which he really enjoyed too .Thank you to the chef and kitchen staff . It’s a great traditional pub with a welcoming atmosphere and log fires . Would highly recommend .

Fantastic food , perfect stay , all the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly . There was a warm and friendly atmosphere it could not have been better . We will definitely be back . Don’t be put off by negative reviews , not sure they stayed in the same place .

Stayed here for 3nights recently . The tall gentleman behind the bar was very abrupt , there was no welcome or asked during the stay if we were ok or were our rooms ok . We asked on the Saturday night in the bar if we could have the tv on there was no one else sat with us and he said no ! It’s for rugby only! Quite surly . A smile and a greeting costs nothing . Breakfast on the 1st morning Mushrooms very salty bacon was 1 piece of streaky bacon not good quality . 2nd morning staff couldn’t get the main door open to let us in Eventually they did Cook hadn’t turned up The guy that let us in hadn’t done breakfast before , There was no fruit juices available we had to ask . Poor customer service throughout .

Whilst driving around the area looking for somewhere to eat we spotted a sign for this place so we decided to drive to it. What a find!! On entering we were greeted with a friendly welcome and felt relaxed immediately. The menu was varied and both my husband and I ordered the fish pie which was just delicious......well recommended! We left happy and full. Would definitely return if in the area.

Not what it used to be… I was so looking forward to getting away.. but unfortunately in my view the Sloop has gone downhill in the last year (in terms of accommodation). Carol Ann the lovely & efficient Housekeeper has left. Things appear (and are) disorganized. The menu has lost the delicious fish dishes Bream and Bass (my favorites). It’ll obviously always be a popular place, and a pub to drink in, but it’s no longer for me

To begin with, I have to say that the location this pub is set in is amazing. Whilst I was here with my family (we were staying in a cottage near the pub in West Buckland) we had an outstanding experience after a long hike overlooking the valley. The food is some next-level stuff I highly recommend the rack of ribs and then for dessert a chocolate brownie. I did notice a sign saying that there were suites available upstairs which we then considered as a place to stay the next time we come. I highly recommend it to any newcomers looking for a new place to visit, bodyboard and surf.

Nice choice of food, friendly staff and of course very dog friendly! Nice atmosphere, clean and tidy. Mixed grill was good, the Chicken Korma was lush! Always been nice everytime we've been. Would always tell friends and family if they are going that way, go to Bantham Beach and call in at The Sloop if you can find somewhere to park :)
