TLH Toorak Hotel - TLH Leisure, Entertainment and Spa Resort
3.8/571 Reviews
Typical British seaside hotel. We booked 4 family ‘terrace’ rooms which are large and open out onto a ‘private’ shared terrace. Rooms were dated and a little worn. Bathroom had 4 cracked tiles on floor and black mould around bath. Also coving hanging off and only holding on by the paint. Restaurant offers good food, but choice is limited and very repetitive. Bit old fashioned (saying that the average guest age has to be around 80) Facilities are good though. Indoor / outdoor pools, large games room, softplay, bowling etc. Lots of bars and a large entertainments room “starlight lounge”. However, pool area needs a good clean. Water very cloudy and looks dirty. The whole hotel is in need of a full refurbishment. It looks like the hotel is too big to maintain and everything is out of control. Everywhere you look there is misty glass, damp, flakey paint, missing tiles, stains, ripped carpets, dated decor, dirt, mess, cigarette buckets next to doorways, Its a shame. Have been here many times, and notice the hotel declines more every year. Until the hotel has had a full refurb, we will not return. Torquay itself is in a very sorry state these days.

We stayed here for a short two night break and found everything to be very good. We were in Torbay suite, a very large room with a seaview and a large bathroom, bath and shower separate. We were informed there was no breakfast but there is a nearby Hotel which did excellent breakfasts at a reasonable cost. The Hotel is a reasonable walk into town and we are oldies, so great location for the younger set. Sauna and Pool were. open and working well. Comfortable bed, clean bedroom and pleasant staff. Only drawback no bar or restaurant so no evening get together spot, but you are welcome to take in your own drinks, we took in two bottles of wine and staff lent us two wine glasses from the now closed bar. All in all a great place for a short break with plenty of nearby eating places so plenty of variety.

Devonshire Hotel

My partner and I received a two-night hotel stay gift voucher for Christmas 2019 and previous to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a wide range of hotels to choose from. Unfortunately, as we hadn’t used it before March, the choice of hotels and locations had reduced dramatically (totally understandable) by the time we came to use it. We chose Torquay as our location and The Devonshire was basically our only option. Despite having a two-night stay voucher we did have to pay an additional £65 but I’m not really sure what it was for. When we opened the door to our room (41) it was dramatically underwhelming. Extremely outdated decor, very basic, very small & the smell of smoke was unbearable even though it was advertised as “non-smoking” and there was a packet of half used filters on the floor (not the staffs fault, I know). We were only here for two nights and as it was only a place to get our heads down at the end of the day we just opened the window, dumped our luggage and went off into the town to find somewhere to eat. On our return, my partner made a comment to Simon on reception (who was so lovely) about our room not being great. Simon seemed a little taken aback because we hadn’t said anything so he handed us our keys and we headed off to our room. 5 minutes later, we had a knock on the door and it was Simon, apologising for the fact the room wasn’t great & offered to show us another room in the outside lodge. We moved to room 61 and it was much better. I did notice the PAT test sticker on the TV in 61 was dated 2014, next due in 2015 and I thought they had to be done yearly at least? TV very small but we weren’t there to stay in the room and watch TV so we weren’t bothered but the bathroom & the room itself were clean and tidy. We had a few drinks in the hotel bar and the gentleman with the glasses who served us was very friendly and had a great sense of humour. Can’t say much for the evening receptionist, young girl with blonde hair. Didn’t come across very friendly and seemed quite miserable if I’m honest. Couldn’t fault Simon though and would like to thank him for being so professional & helpful. All in all, it isn’t the worst hotel I’ve stayed in but I don’t think it’s somewhere I would rush back to on my next stay to Torquay. I’ve previously stayed in the TLH chain and highly recommend them so will be sticking with them. (First two pictures are 41, last three 61)
The Headland Hotel & Spa

Nice hotel with lovely location. Spa and food facilities are very good. Standard family room was dated, mattresses were awful, springs had gone. Nice bathroom. Generally hotel was clean. We arrived to a lot of dust on one of the beds which kept appearing, perhaps from the top of the headboard? Not sure. Could do with more staff at breakfast. Overall, would visit again.
