This is a twofer review: the hotel, and the restaurant. We booked well in advance. The hotel is a funky wonder with a lived-in feel. Close to the waterfront but it was so windy that day/night that skipping a stroll and staying in was a no-brainer. Plus, this place is cozy and fun. Our 2nd-floor room was comfy and roomy, with a well-modernized bathroom. Clean, and quiet. Bonus: Around the corner, a large library/study/lounge, equally quiet (it’d be interesting to see what it’s like with music downstairs). And an Honesty Bar! You pour your drink and mark the sheet, to be paid for later. The restaurant: Good pub food and drinks, w/friendly service. We didn’t have the bad experiences other reviewers have reported. Breakfast was fresh and hearty. Bonus: A really nice bookstore, off to the side, with a curated collection that leans heavily Scottish. After hours, you pay for your books at the bar. I got a bit of ribbing from the bartender for buying a history of the Scottish Clearances by T.M. Devine. She’d recently earned her Ph.D. in Scottish history and said I’ll need to pick up a book on the topic by Jim Hunter (I believe) to balance out my understanding ☺️ Funny.
