The Bar Convent Guest House

Rooms are fairly basic, but beds are comfortable, rooms are clean and quiet, hot water was plentiful and towels are large. Staff is attentive and helpful. The breakfast was fantastic - we had a choice of cooked (eggs, bacon, potatoes, full English) or homemade granola, fruit, yogurt and pastries. Cooked breakfast is made to order, hot and delicious. We also strongly suggest paying extra to get a scone. They are huge, buttery and SO good. Loved the location, we walked minutes from the train station. Close to the city wall and a short walk to York Minster.

We usually stay in Premier Inn when visiting York but decided to try The Bar Convent after looking at reviews. What a gem of a place. We booked a double standard room. The room was spotless with a large ensuite bathroom. Everything modern and we cannot fault. Breakfast was lovely, large selection of pastries, cereals and a cooked breakfast, cooked to order. A unique and fascinating place to stay and we will definitely stay again.

Another lovely stay at the convent. 5 minutes walk from train station and offer luggage storage. Very clean throughout. Everyone friendly and happy. Room was spacious and modern. Breakfast was delicious. Lovely communal kitchen too refurbished since the last time we stayed.

Lovely find… My friend and I had a wonderful stay… spotlessly clean.. beautiful surroundings.. Great breakfast.. Would definitely recommend.. Twin room on first floor was lovely .. we loved the quirkiness of it.. as you enter the room there is a toilet and sink at one side and shower and sink on the other.. then u climb a few stairs and your into the large spacious room.. lovely beds/linen and white fluffy towels… double aspect windows.. Although will admit it is onto the busy traffic lights system outside therefore noisy when window open.. Fabulous breakfast.. loved the teapot and silver cutlery.. and breakfast was presented and tasted great.. The whole place is beautiful.

We loved this place. It was a great surprise, and perfect for two ex convent girls on a road trip celebrating 50 years of friendship. Very comfortable room, a lovely place to wander about in, very good breakfast. Perfectly situated for wandering around York. One tip, we arrived gasping for a drink and there wasn't a bar! It is a bar of a different sort. No worries, we went out and got a bottle!

More interesting than a Holiday Inn or bland hotel but they charge a premium price for a mid-range service. We paid just over £200/ night x 3 for a “superior” room and got cheap toilet roll and the explanation that only jug/ filter coffee was available on a Sunday as they don’t switch the coffee machine on unless the cafe is open. (This tells me that cafe customers are considered more important than hotel guests). Breakfast is exactly as shown in photos by other reviewers- great if that’s what you want but few options apart from English fry-up. In 2023 I would expect a 4 star hotel to do a little better.

My friend & I recently discovered we make good travel companions (not always the case, sadly). The Bar Convent was her idea & an excellent one. We had separate rooms on the top floor, not accessible by lift. The rooms contained all the modern amenities (electric kettle, modern plumbing, flat screen TV, WiFi) but I was struck by the twin bed and nary a mass produced painting on the walls. It felt like a nun's cell (not that I would actually know): it was perfect. While the location was great (York is very walkable in any case), we also enjoyed exploring the convent itself: the museum, the chapel, the back hallways. And, yes, we found the (alleged) hand of St. Margaret Clitherow (it's behind a screened window to the left of the altar). Breakfast was easy to order with excellent choices & we delighted starting our mornings in that lovely atrium. This was my fourth visit to York - there's always something more to explore & experience - and my fourth lodging. I will stay here again at my next visit.

Wonderful gem of a place! I’m so happy I stayed here and not at one of the soulless corporate places in the area. Late arrival (due to weather) but check-in was warm and friendly. Super comfortable large room and en-suite with heating, Aircon, piping hot water and high quality bedding etc. Great breakfast in delightful surroundings, and a lovely secret garden and chapel with reliciquary actually on site. Everything about the stay was indeed perfect, will definitely stay here again
