Gillygate Guest House

Was visiting York for a couple of hours and stopped in for a pint. They are child friendly as my wee boy was with me which is definitely a plus. The place was spotless and the staff was brilliant. Thinking about visiting York and this will be the first place I'll be checking for a room.

Absolutely disgraceful with a group of people never again only for singing Xmas songs but happy take all of our money and entertain the pub otherwise it would of been like a morgue certain bar staff extremely rude

Not good value. Reception staff friendly, and room OK. Comfortable bed. Barman said he'd be open for a drink when I got back (23:30) but everything locked up. Breakfast was mediocre - no vegetarian version of full English breakfast. Was told I could have everything but the sausage and bacon! No proper coffee, just horrid instant stuff. Unfriendly service. Hotel guests have only a 30 minute window (09:00 to 09:30), whereas walk-ins have until 12:00. This presumably is to facilitate the unreasonably early checkout time of 10:00. I wouldn't stay here again.

Have just returned from an overnight stay at The Gillygate Guest house. It’s just a stones throw from York Minster and the shops so is a perfect location. The guesthouse is quite small from the outside, but the rooms are very spacious and clean. We arrived early and was met by the host Mark, who was very helpful with booking in and parking. The parking was free, which is a big bonus in a very busy city.

Stayed in room 7 in the Annex (behind the pub) for 4 nights. Located just outside the wall, it was a quick 5 minute walk to York Minster. Paid just over $800 CAD for 4 nights. I'd say the price was reasonable based solely on convenient location, but quality of accommodation it was over-priced! The room had been renovated and the bed was comfortable, however it was quite damp and the smell of sewer coming from the bathroom was awful! As the window over looked the courtyard and was at ground level I had to leave my curtains closed at all times for privacy. This made the damp and dark space quite depressing. I booked through *******, which indicated daily housekeeping. There is NO housekeeping! On my third day, I stopped in the pub to ask for toilet rolls and a towel. The person at the bar did not know where to find these items. Let's just say, sadly, I was happy to sit in train station for 1.5 hours and wait for my train to Cambridge. This little inn has potential but has a lot of work to do to get to where they should be for a comfortable stay!

We popped in here for a late breakfast. What a lovely place to visit .The staff were cheerful and helpful and the breakfast was brilliant. Great value for money .We would definitely go there again.
