Hotel Shiroyama Reviews

The hotel is located within 5 minutes of Yugawara Station. It is located in a suburban location and is mostly populated by local Japanese tourists. There are foreign employees who speak English at the front desk of the hotel, but since I can speak Japanese, it makes no difference to me. The package includes dinner on the day of check-in and breakfast on the next day. Dinner this time was eaten in the room, and breakfast was eaten on the third floor of the hotel. The meals for both days were very delicious and filling. We also added extra for each meal. One portion of long crab legs, very fresh and sweet. In terms of room configuration, there is a private bath in the room, which is more than enough for two people to soak in the spring water. The only drawback is that the bath has no windows and is not sealed, so mosquitoes and other small insects can fly in. People who are prone to mosquito bites need to be careful. The toilet in the room is separated from wet and dry areas. There is enough space for two people to brush their teeth together. There is a hairdryer and hair straighteners in the toilet, which are gifts for ladies. Overall, it's a very good experience. Don't be put off by the old appearance of the hotel. The interior decoration is very new, and some rooms have only been recently renovated. If you pass near Atami, you can choose to stay in this hotel.

I travelled with my elderly father and found this hotel to be one of the best that I have stayed. The level of service from the doorman, to the front desk, the maid service, and the restaraunt staff was far beyond of what I expected! The Shiroyama Hotel has been the crown jewel of Kagoshima and will always will be in my mind.

Hotel Shiroyama might be easily overlooked by foreign travelers. And there may be a reason for that. It doesn't really cater to non-Japanese speakers. That said, if you can speak some Japanese and you have a good understanding of Japanese etiquette and rules, you can have an excellent experience at this hotel. (I am a Westerner, I can speak some Japanese, and I have a Japanese husband. All of this was greatly to my benefit, so, keep that in mind as you read this review.) Hotel Shiroyama is, depending on what part of the hotel you are in, quite old. There are parts of it that look like it's from the Showa era, with maroon walls and old-style hotel carpeting. But then... in the men's sento (public bath), it was incredibly beautiful and clean and modern. Small, yes, but still, truly lovely. Also, the rooms: there must have been a "refresh" on all the bathrooms: there were double sinks, a stall shower with an overheard attachment so you can really get a good blasting if you want one, and of course a washlet toilet with the lid that opens when you approach it. The rooms were also quite large, with a separate little sitting area near the window (although there is no view to speak of, at least from the 2nd floor). The pièce de résistance is the Japanese dinner that is served in your room. It is quite astonishing in the number of dishes that are offered: lots of small appetizers, sashimi, sumashijiru (a clear soup that is divine), beef stew covered with a baked rice cracker, several other dishes that are heated at the table, rice, of course, and more. We stopped counting and stopped eating -- it was too much. And then of course there was dessert. Now, I am not saying this was a 5-star meal; some of it was great, the rest was good. But the amount that was served was sort of mind-boggling. Of course you can also order beer or sake or soft drinks to go with the meal. Trust me; for two people, it was just way too much food, unless you have super hearty appetites and absolutely love Japanese cuisine. That said, if you are unable to sit cross-legged in a chair made for that purpose, you will be somewhat uncomfortable for the entire meal. It is all served on a low table, and while you can put your feet under the table, you will not be sitting in a position that is natural for most Westerners. There is a smallish table in the sitting room (near the window), but do not expect them to put the food there, because there are too many dishes and they won't fit. I would say the Hotel Shiroyama went above and beyond to provide a really lovely "Japanese experience" with their dinner. Also, the breakfast served in the morning in a communal dining room was fairly hearty, but it is entirely Japanese. If you are used to eating this way, or you are craving this kind of experience you will enjoy it -- but remember, these meals are "set." There is no substitution for anything. In late May, my husband and I visited the hotel and rented a room on the 5th floor. It's very close and convenient, only a 2-minute walk from the station! I thought it would be very crowded because it's a day-trip hot spring, but it was surprisingly calm. It was after 2 p.m., but the front desk wasn't crowded and we were able to check in smoothly. There is welcome coffee on the 1st floor. It seems that you can only drink it on the spot, so you can't take it to your room. The room has been renovated and is very clean! It was well-cleaned, and there was coffee (Nespresso) in the room. The water next to the coffee maker is free, but the refrigerator is charged. You can also enjoy a relaxing bath in the indoor bath in the room. What was good about the room was that it had Refa, which I wanted to try! The hair dryer and iron were Refa. Maybe the shower head in the room was the same (because it was a shower head I'd never seen before). There was also my favorite POLA shampoo provided. The scent of roses is soothing ♪ The selling point of this inn is radon hot springs. There is no radon in the rooms, but there is a radon hot spring behind the door in the large public bath. It is said that it is good to soak for 5-10 minutes, but since the temperature is low at 38-39 degrees, it seems that you can stay in for longer. It is not hot at all, so it is not a burden on the body and you can soak very slowly. There is also an open-air bath, but the view is... nothing can be seen. However, the fresh air outside is good and it feels good. It was a beautiful renovated large public bath. And you can enjoy your meal at your leisure in your room. What is delicious is the chef's handmade sweet ginger and miso soup, which are exquisite! The meal was really delicious, with spiny lobster, beef stew, and luxurious sashimi. The rice in the clay pot is also the best in the morning! There are many side dishes, and it was nice to be able to drink the mandarin orange juice sold at the shop, and there is an all-you-can-eat salmon roe and whitebait. I am concerned about salt, so I can't eat that much, but it's nice to be able to enjoy both in the morning. I heard that day trips are also possible from 12:00, so I'd like to try that next time. It's also possible to use the bath after paying, so if I have time, I'd like to enjoy a little bath after my meal before going home. (Please bring your own towel.) It was a wonderful inn with a lot of ways to enjoy it and great hospitality. I've been to many inns, including Hakone and Atami, but overall this might be my number one, I really like it.
