I only had one day to explore Düsseldorf, so I didn't try to see everything. And honestly, that worked quite well. Düsseldorf isn't a very busy or hectic city, but it's beautiful and very pleasant to explore on foot, with parks, squares, beautiful streets, promenades and great shops. So this was my one-day itinerary: 🥐 Start the morning with a traditional German breakfast at Konditorei Heinemann A good way to start the day slowly, and don't leave without trying some of their confections. I also bought some to take with me. 🦆 Walk around Königsallee Königsallee is known for its elegant shops, but I enjoyed taking my time along the canal and watching the ducks swimming in the water. 🎄 Browse Nussknacker Haus A fun stop if you're visiting around Christmas, especially if you like traditional Christmas decorations. I stopped here to look for Christmas ornaments. 🥙 Have a Döner at Dene & Gör Düsseldorf has a great Turkish food scene, so I couldn't leave without trying a Döner. 🚶 Spend the afternoon walking through the parks and streets This was one of the things I enjoyed most about Düsseldorf. There was no need to constantly look for the next attraction. I could simply walk, explore the parks and squares, browse the shops and enjoy the city. 🌅 End the day by the Rhein The highlight of my day was slowing down by the river and watching the sunset. After a full day of walking around the city, it was the perfect way to finish. One thing to know before visiting: Düsseldorf isn't a city that feels overwhelmingly busy, which I actually liked. It makes this kind of one-day itinerary feel very relaxed. There are also plenty of international food options beyond German cuisine, including Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese restaurants. And one small caveat: smoking is quite common in Germany, including in many outdoor public spaces, so you may notice it while walking around or eating outside. Germany has some great places to visit for those who put the effort in but Nuremberg would be number one on my list! Sure people know about it and visit but not in the vast tourist numbers like Athens, Paris or London. I have recommended this medieval town and to family and friends for years and everyone always comments they have heard of the Christmas Markets but did not realize how gorgeous the old town is. It has an airport and is well connected to the test of the country with the train network. From Berlin the fast train (ICE) stops on the way through to Munich, so this could be a in-between over night stop. The Park Plaza Nuremberg is a very short walk from the train station (two minutes). It is near the Frauentour and a repilca medieval street. I recommend it for the location and really nice rooms! There is an old town surrounded by huge sandstone walls, towers and the quintessential moat. Although the moat is dry nowadays, you need to use your imagination to cast you back to medieval times. The Pegnitz runs through the middle of town making for fantastic photo opportunities. While exploring the town which is fairly large and would take the full day or possibly two. I suggest seeing the Kaiserburg, the castle it has excellent views over the old town.The Weissgerbergasse, the Hauptmarket Square, and the Cathedral. I would keep my eyes open while walking around for one of the many bakeries for an afternoon coffee and cake. #underratedspots #berlin #germany The ruins of the Franciscan Monastery Church, or Ruine der Franziskaner-Klosterkirche, are one of those small Berlin spots that are very easy to walk past without realizing what’s there. And I think they’re absolutely worth stopping for. The church dates back to the Middle Ages and was heavily damaged during World War II. What remains today has a beautiful, almost haunting atmosphere, with the exposed brick walls and open spaces giving the ruins a very different feel from most of Berlin’s historic buildings. It’s not a huge site, but there are plenty of interesting architectural details to look at, and it’s surprisingly photogenic. I enjoyed simply walking through the ruins and taking my time looking at the structure. At the end of the passage, there’s also a small room where you can watch a short video about the history of the building. It’s a simple addition, but I found it really interesting and it gave the place much more context. 📍 Ruine der Franziskaner-Klosterkirche Klosterstraße 73a, 10179 Berlin It’s right in central Berlin, close to Alexanderplatz and the Nikolaiviertel, so it’s easy to combine with a walk around the historic centre. This isn’t the kind of attraction where you need to spend hours, but it’s a lovely little detour if you’re exploring central Berlin. I liked that it felt quiet and understated compared with some of the city’s bigger landmarks. If you’re into architecture, history, or atmospheric places that are slightly off the usual tourist route, I’d definitely add it to your walk.
