Departure City: About 3.5 hours drive from Albuquerque 2. Road Conditions: The last 10 miles are gravel and dirt roads, bumpy and full of potholes; a four-wheel drive or high-clearance off-road vehicle is required; regular cars are very likely to scrape the bottom 3. Travel Tips: Gas stations are scarce along the way; fill up the tank before departure; no public transportation available, self-driving only 4. In the early morning, mist covers the iconic mushroom rocks, creating a full atmospheric vibe. Photography Tips: Use a wide-angle lens for panoramic canyon shots and a telephoto lens to compress rock layers; wear bright red, orange, or yellow clothing to contrast with the earth-yellow and orange-red rock walls for striking photos. 2. Fossil Valley Trail | Jurassic Archaeological Site The trail surface is scattered with numerous dinosaur bone fossils visible up close, but strict rules apply: · Maintain a 1.5-meter safe distance from fossils; no stepping on or climbing the rock layers · You may bring a small brush to clean off loose dirt for a simple archaeological experience; it is illegal to remove any fossils · The ground clay is soft; stay on existing trails and avoid stepping on soil slopes 3. Alien Canyon | Sci-Fi Filming Location The most famous spot in the entire park, with fluorescent orange, mint green, and creamy white multi-layered rocks interwoven, creating a surreal color clash like an alien surface. ⚠️ Safety Reminder: The rock walls are loose and prone to collapse; strictly follow marked routes and do not venture deep into the canyon. 🌌 Night Tour Exclusive: Desert Milky Way Starry Night Far from city light pollution, the entire wilderness reveals the full Milky Way to the naked eye at night. The rock pillars framed against the starry sky create a powerful visual impact. Photography Gear: Tripod, large aperture camera, headlamp; use long exposure of 10–15 seconds, ISO 1600–3200 to easily capture stunning star trails. Tips: The desert has extreme temperature differences between day and night; bring a windproof thick jacket for nighttime. 🎒 Essential Packing List · Clothing: High-top anti-slip hiking boots, windproof face mask, wide-brim sun hat · Water: Large capacity water bags with at least 3 liters per person; the desert has no shade and intense sun exposure, with a high risk of dehydration · Equipment: Satellite GPS/offline maps, camera + tripod, sunscreen with SPF 50+ · Others: Basic first aid kit, some dry snacks, trash bags (all trash must be carried out) ⚠️ Strict Safety Rules & Pitfall Warnings 1. Drone Restrictions: Drones are prohibited throughout the protected area; violations will be penalized 3. Wildlife Encounters: If you encounter rattlesnakes or venomous lizards, stay still and slowly back away without disturbing them 4. In the Navajo Nation in northwest New Mexico, USA, a massive volcanic neck rises like the spine of a sleeping giant dragon—this is Ship Rock. It is not only a geological wonder but also a sacred center of Navajo belief. In winter, the plains are covered with a thin layer of snow, the air is crisp and clear, and visibility is extremely high. In the vast and desolate landscape, this solitary peak appears even more majestic and mysterious. This is a pilgrimage journey dedicated to families who love science and magnificent scenery. 🗿 Dual interpretation: geology and culture · Geological perspective: It is a volcanic neck (solidified magma in a volcanic conduit) left from an eruption about 27 million years ago. After millions of years of erosion, the surrounding soft rock layers have worn away, leaving only this incredibly hard core, standing 482 meters tall, like a natural monument. · Navajo cultural perspective: In Navajo, it is called “Tsé Bitʼaʼí” (winged rock). Legend says it is the transformed sacred bird that brought the Navajo ancestors from the north to this land. It is sacred and climbing is forbidden. Travelers must show the utmost respect, observing from a distance without desecration. 📍 Viewing points and photography guide · Main viewing points: There are multiple dirt roads (mostly gravel) on the plains that approach it. The most common viewing point is along US-491 highway. Use map coordinates (36.6875, -108.8364) for navigation. · Safety guidelines: All land is privately owned by the Navajo Nation. Be sure to stay on public roads or in clearly permitted parking areas. Do not enter or walk into private ranches without permission. · Best shooting times: Sunrise and sunset. In winter, the low angle of sunlight casts golden or fiery red light, illuminating Ship Rock brilliantly against changing dawn or dusk skies, creating spectacular scenes. Midday light is harsh and flat. · Lens recommendations: Wide-angle lenses show the contrast between the plains and the solitary peak; telephoto lenses compress space and capture detailed textures of the rock face. 👨‍👩‍👧 How to conduct an educational family visit · Pre-trip preparation: Watch geography documentaries about volcanic formation and erosion, and read a simple introduction to Navajo culture. · On-site tasks: 1. Geologist task: Observe the columnar joints of Ship Rock and guess the cooling process of volcanic lava. Compare with the surrounding flat plains to understand the power of erosion. 2. Cultural observer task: Stay quiet and feel the spiritual power of this land. Discuss why different civilizations regard natural wonders as sacred. · Artistic creation: Facing such a magnificent scene, let children record their feelings with drawing or writing, focusing on expressing emotions rather than exact likeness. 🏨 Accommodation base options There are no nearby towns, so use larger towns as bases. Farmington, NM (about 40 minutes’ drive): The most convenient base. Recommended hotels include Courtyard by Marriott Farmington or Homewood Suites by Hilton Farmington, both well-equipped. Shiprock, NM (about 20 minutes’ drive): A small town with very limited accommodation options (such as Navajo Lodge), but closer. Durango, CO (about 1.5 hours’ drive): A scenic tourist town with a wide range of lodging and dining options, can be combined with a visit to Mesa Verde National Park. 🚗 Self-driving and wilderness travel safety rules · Vehicle: Must rent a high-clearance SUV or off-road vehicle. Winter roads in the plains may be snow-covered or muddy. · Supplies: Fill up the gas tank, carry at least one day’s worth of drinking water and food (including high-calorie snacks). Keep blankets and a first aid kit in the car. · Communication: Most areas have no cell phone signal. Inform your hotel or others of your itinerary and estimated round-trip time. If possible, carry satellite communication equipment. · Weather: Winter weather is changeable, with possible wind and snow at any time. Monitor weather forecasts closely and turn back immediately in severe weather. Ship Rock is not an easy vacation spot. It is an expedition that tests preparation, respect, and reflection. When your whole family stands in the wilderness facing this ancient solitary giant rock, the sense of smallness and awe you feel will become a key for your children to understand the world and themselves.

🌙 The first time you see Bisti, it's easy to doubt whether what's in front of you is Earth. This wilderness, located in the northwest of New Mexico, USA, has no vast forests, no lakes or mountains. Looking out, it's an endless expanse of gray-white, brownish-red, and earthy yellow land. Tens of millions of years of wind, water, and geological changes have slowly carved sandstone, shale, mudstone, and coal seams into strange rock pillars, spires, hoodoos, and "stone mushrooms." Some look like giant mushrooms, some like flying saucers, and others like some kind of alien creature crouching on the ground. Its greatest charm is the lack of artificial embellishment. Unlike typical national parks, there are no neat trails, railings, or observation decks here. In many places, there isn't even a clear route; you are simply searching for strange rocks scattered deep in the wilderness. The BLM also specifically reminds visitors that the terrain is remote, routes are unmarked, and cell signal is weak or non-existent, so it's best to prepare offline maps or a GPS before coming. 🪨 The most fascinating part is those "rocks that don't look like they belong on Earth" Bisti is most famous for its hoodoos. Harder sandstone remains on top to form "caps," while the softer mudstone below is slowly eroded by wind and rain, eventually forming top-heavy, strange rocks. Some look like mushroom clusters from a distance, some like giant eggs, and some people call certain landforms "stone wings," "alien eggs," or "petrified forests." The colors change as light hits the rock layers at different times—cool gray in the early morning, turning golden in the afternoon, and reddish-brown, orange-gold, or even slightly purple at dusk. Therefore, the best way to experience this place is not just to "see the sights," but to walk slowly and explore. You'll get a feeling: turn a corner around a mound, and suddenly a completely different little world appears before your eyes. 🦖 This place used to be a world of dinosaurs More interestingly, Bisti is not just a simple desert. The strata in this area date back to the Late Cretaceous period. You can still see petrified wood today, and vertebrate fossils have been discovered here. The BLM lists this as an important paleontological resource area, so visitors cannot dig up or take away vertebrate fossils at will, and collecting petrified wood is also prohibited in this Wilderness. So walking here actually feels like time travel—the seemingly dead land before your eyes might have been a completely different world tens of millions of years ago. 🌅 When is the best time to visit? I recommend spring and autumn. The BLM also notes that the climate is usually most comfortable during these two seasons. The truly most beautiful time for photography is: 1–2 hours after sunrise The rock textures and shadows are very three-dimensional, and there are fewer people. 2 hours before sunset This is the most dreamy time in my opinion. The low-angle sunlight casts long shadows from the rock pillars, and the originally gray-white wilderness suddenly turns golden, giving it a special "lunar base" feel. If it's a clear, moonless night, this place is also perfect for stargazing. The BLM also lists stargazing as one of the main activities here. 🚗 How to get there? The most commonly used one is the Bisti Trailhead. Starting from Farmington, head south on NM-371 for about 36 miles, then turn onto County Road 7297, and drive a few more miles on a dirt road to reach the main parking area. Officials remind visitors that these sections are unpaved and can be very slippery or even impassable after rain or snow, so it is recommended to drive a vehicle with high ground clearance. There is no admission fee, and it is open all year round. The Bisti entrance has a parking area, a simple shaded picnic area, and restrooms, but no drinking water; the De-Na-Zin side doesn't even have restrooms. ⚠️ The most important point about going here This is not the kind of place where you can just "put on a pair of regular shoes and tour the scenic spot." There are no official trails in many parts of the wilderness, the terrain is uneven, and cell signal is poor. It is best to bring enough water, sunscreen, a hat, hiking shoes, and offline maps. Especially after rain, do not try to force your way through; the mud becomes very sticky and slippery, and roads may be impassable. Also, because this is a Wilderness area, bicycles, motor vehicles, and drones are not allowed to enter. 🌌 If I were to post this on social media, I would write: Bisti lunar wonder, an alien world carved by hundreds of millions of years of wind and rain. No flowers, no green trees, and no noisy crowds, just gray-white land and strange-shaped stone mushrooms, pillars, and hoodoos. Walking into it, it feels like you've stepped off Earth. As the sunset slowly falls, golden light spills over the desolate rock layers, and those stones that have slept for tens of millions of years suddenly come to life. At this moment, you will understand that some beauty does not need lush mountains and clear waters—extreme desolation is, in itself, a kind of magnificence. Bisti is just such a place. Like the moon, and like Mars; like the ancient past, and like the future. If one day you want to escape the city and see what Earth looks like when it least resembles Earth, then Bisti is worth a visit.

On our recent road trip to Four Corners and Monument Valley, we came across a modest but wonderful exhibit inside a restaurant dedicated to the Navajo Code Talkers, who are credited with saving countless lives and shortening World War II. The two parks we visited are located on the ancestral and traditional homeland of the Navajo. I am grateful to have visited their sovereign home and learned about their culture.

👽 So, what is Roswell all about? Roswell is a small city in southeastern New Mexico with a population of around 50,000. It’s famous for one thing and one thing only: The 1947 "Roswell Incident." In July 1947, a massive amount of unidentified wreckage was discovered at a ranch near Roswell. The U.S. military initially described it as a "flying disc," but quickly changed their story, claiming it was just debris from a weather balloon. The government later explained it was part of the top-secret Project Mogul. Despite the official narrative, the legend of a "crashed alien spacecraft and a military recovery of extraterrestrials" has persisted ever since. Today, the entire city has been virtually taken over by "aliens" 😂: · 👽 Alien statues everywhere · 🛸 UFO-shaped structures · 👽 Alien-themed streetlights · 👽 Extraterrestrial-themed shops · 🛸 The International UFO Museum · Even the local McDonald’s is shaped like a UFO! The original incident involved three main locations: Impact Site 1 (still classified), Impact Site 2 (on public land, but near the Very Large Array), and the debris field (a private ranch that has changed hands many times). The debris field is about 75 miles from downtown, but there’s no specific public information on how to get there. It wasn't until I arrived in New Mexico that I realized just how vast these "ranches" are—they are essentially endless. Even if you tried to find the site, you’d be lost. The conclusion is that those sites are unreachable, but because of this, I looked up the Aztec UFO Crash Site instead. Unlike the Roswell sites, this one is clearly marked on Google Maps. The U.S. conducted nuclear tests in 1945. The Roswell Incident followed in 1947, with its two impact points flanking the nuclear test site to the east and west. Then, in 1948, another crash occurred in Aztec, to the northwest of the testing grounds. Some believe that UFO sightings are often linked to nuclear energy locations. Who knows?

If you’re tired of crowded attractions and want to visit a quiet place where you can almost hear the wind, then New Mexico’s Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness Study Area will take you into a true “alien world.” There are no tall buildings, shops, or paved trails here—only endless wilderness. Millions of years of wind and rain have sculpted the soft rock layers into shapes resembling mushrooms, castles, animals, and mysterious figures. Some massive stones precariously balance atop stone pillars, as if they might fall any second, yet they have stood there for countless ages. The gray-white, tan, and olive-green land shifts in layers under the sunlight, with sunrise and dusk especially magical. This is also an open-air prehistoric museum where dinosaur fossils, ancient animal remains, and petrified wood have been found. Walking here feels like traveling back tens of millions of years. However, you may only observe and photograph—removing fossils, stones, or petrified wood is strictly prohibited. You can base your trip in Farmington, drive south along US-550, turn onto NM-57 near Nageezi, and finally reach the area via a remote dirt road. The reserve is free to enter but has no ticket office, restrooms, drinking water, or official trails, and cell service is unreliable. U.S. Bureau of Land Management traffic information The best time to visit is spring and fall. Avoid the hot summer and rainy or snowy weather. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, sturdy hiking shoes, and offline maps. For first-timers, joining a local guided tour is safer and makes it easier to find the most spectacular rock formations. This is not a bustling tourist spot for quick visits but a deep wilderness adventure: no noise, no commercial atmosphere, only ancient landforms, vast skies, and traces left by time. Those who enjoy quiet, photography, and unique geological landscapes will find it breathtaking; however, if you have limited stamina or are not used to hiking in the wild, it’s not advisable to go alone. ⚠️ Danger level: medium-high This is not an ordinary sightseeing area but true wilderness: no official trails, restrooms, drinking water, or reliable cell signal, and it’s easy to get lost; summer brings intense sun exposure, dirt roads may become muddy and difficult after rain, and low-lying areas carry sudden flood risks. It’s recommended to bring enough water, sun protection, sturdy hiking shoes, and offline maps or GPS. For first visits, it’s best to go with others or join a guided tour. Older adults, those with limited stamina, and people without wilderness hiking experience are not advised to enter alone. Be sure to check weather and road conditions before setting out.
