If you ever find yourself in Ilısu, you *have* to check out Selale Waterfall (that’s “Şəlalə Waterfall” for the locals). It’s an absolute stunner—and getting there is a mini adventure! 😍 First heads-up: You can’t just drive straight up to the falls. You’ll need to park your car at the bigger carpark at the base (it’s located near Ilısu village, Gakh District, Azerbaijan). Then, you’ll see a bunch of local drivers chilling with their rugged 4x4s, ready to bring you up the mountain road that regular cars can’t handle. The ride costs about 15 manat per car for the whole round trip, and it’s def worth it. Don’t stress about finding them—they’ll probably spot you first! Unfortunately for us, the waterfalls is frozen when we visited The short journey in those tough 4x4s is a total vibe—think bumpy off-road, dramatic mountain scenery, and a cool breeze. Once you arrive, get prepped: the waterfall is so Insta-worthy. Bring your camera and maybe a rain jacket if you want to get close! Hot tip: Make sure to check out the opening hours beforehand (generally, the area is most lively from around 9:00 to 18:00), and bring cash for the ride. There aren’t a lot of ATMs around. A Day in Gabala Known as Azerbaijan's Switzerland, Gabala is a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike. With its mountainous terrain, pine and chestnut forests, the gorges of the Greater Caucasus, stunning waterfalls, and the picturesque Nokhur Lake, Gabala has transformed from a quiet little town into a full-fledged resort. In winter, visitors flock to Gabala for skiing and snowboarding. In summer, they enjoy breathtaking views from cable cars. For children, there are entertainment centers, including Gabaland Park, which spans 16 hectares and features attractions, a children's pool, and an ice palace. At Nokhur Lake, you can go rowing, fishing, or ride pedal boats. The lakeside is dotted with charming cafes and numerous coffee shops, and souvenirs near the lake are reasonably priced compared to Baku. You can find magnets, keychains, plates, and more. There are also lovely photo spots. Gabala is located about 200 km from Azerbaijan's capital. If you have time, you can rent a cottage or stay at a hotel to experience Azerbaijan's Switzerland. The resorts are modern and new, as the area has been developed as a tourist destination only in the past 20 years. Gabala itself, however, is steeped in history, being the ancient capital of the former Caucasian Albania state. Gabala is over 2,000 years old. If you visit for a few days, you can try extreme tourism activities like mountaineering, paragliding, quad biking, shooting, and paintball. Or simply enjoy nature by cycling through the forest and along the riverbanks. We visited Gabala for half a day while traveling from Sheki. You can plan your route similarly—visit Sheki, the village of Kish, and stop by Gabala on your way to Baku. Ride the cable car, have coffee at a stylish restaurant at altitude, and take photos with a monkey. Before reaching Baku from Gabala, you can also stop at the Savalan winery to see the production process and taste their grape beverages. The Old City of Baku, Azerbaijan, is a key town on the ancient Silk Road. A low-key World Cultural Heritage site. I used an 85mm prime lens to capture the cinematic feel where ancient and modern meet 📸. Stayed three nights in the Old City, wandering the streets and alleys every day. Even with walking navigation, I still got dizzy and disoriented. This kind of getting lost is also a charming experience. The millennium-old city surprisingly offers endless freshness to explore. What comes to your mind when you hear „Azerbaijan”? Probably Baku. Maybe Ganja or Qabala. But have you ever heard about Xinaliq? I'll let you in on a secret: even many Azerbaijanis don't know it exists, which is a big mistake, as it's a unique place with incredible landscapes and culture. Xinaliq is one of most remote villages in Azerbaijan located around 2200 meters above sea level. This is a unique place with over 5000 year history. People who live there have their own language and culture, different from all other country. That’s why it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. How to get there? There is no public transport from Baku or other cities, so the only way to visit Xinaliq is to take a private transfer. The price may vary, but average is 150-200 manat per car for all day (so good idea is to share the car). Trip takes around 3 hours one way. Pro tip: One the way there you can also visit Candy Cane Mountains and Beshbarmak. Both places are definitely worth to visit. What to do there? The best about Xinaliq is the road there. It’s very picturesque and the mountain landscapes are just amazing. Note: some part of the road are in bad condition, so consider to take a taxi with high clearance. In the same village I recommend you to visit local museum (free of charge), take a walk between local houses (pay attention that a cow dung is used as a building material) and buy some handmade souvenirs mostly made of sheep wool. Enjoy beautiful landscapes and fresh mountain air. You can also visit Zoroastrian temple near the village. There are also several guesthouses so you even can stay overnight. Transit, only one day of stopover. But this place was a pleasant surprise; I should have planned two more days in Baku. The climate is comfortable, prices are reasonable, and strolling slowly along the seaside boulevard while gazing at the only lake in the world called a "sea" is incredibly enjoyable. What touched me the most were the smiles on their faces and their enthusiasm to help, which eased much of my fatigue that day. I can only hope to have another chance in the future to truly experience this Caucasus country.
