Bonifacio travel guide and discussion

Bonifacio is the second largest city on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, France. It is located at the southernmost tip of the island and is separated from Sardinia, Italy by the Bonifacio Strait. This is the background of the short story "Vendetta" by Guy de Maupassant, who is known as the king of short stories in the world. The French stop of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series is held at Bonifacio Bridge. The southern coast near the Bonifacio Bridge is an outcrop of chalky limestone, steep and carved into unusual shapes by the ocean. The best option is to take a cruise ship to view the scenery from the sea. The old town is located on the ruins of a castle and a promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Although Bonifacio has a long history, there are two prehistoric sites outside the city, which were already recorded in the documents written by Ptolemy, a geographer of the Roman era in the 2nd century AD. But the fortress you see today was founded in 828 by Boniface II of Tuscany and was subsequently named after him. He led a naval expedition to suppress the Saracens in North Africa, and returned to build an impregnable fortress and naval base from which Tuscany could defend its outermost borders, which in today's terms would be a buffer zone from here across the Mediterranean to mainland Italy. Most of the castle dates from the 9th century or an uncertain date, but the round tower, Il Torrione, is certainly part of the original castle. The castle has been rebuilt and renovated several times since its construction, most recently serving as the administrative center for the French Foreign Legion. #OverseasTravel #France #Mediterranean #Corsica #IslandHoliday #Island #EuropeTravel #EuropeTourism #france #corsica #bonifacio

Bonifacio is a part of the island of Corsica. About a two hour drive from the airport around the winding mountains and next to the beautiful sea. Bonifacio has a gorgeous port with many different types of boats docked. There are plenty of delicious seafood restaurants and small shops that one can shop for souvenirs in. For the most part it is a frequently visited area in the summer because of the clean and fresh water. However, there are still plenty of activities including hiking and boat riding out to the sea for a fun day in the sun and swimming. Overall, if you are a summer person you will love it here. Don’t forget to take some peaks at the luxury yachts near the end of the boardwalk. #europe #vacation #france #corsica #bonifacio

French remote island 💙Corsica💙 A town called Bonifacio It's a bit of a strange overseas destination, but I went there during the New Year holidays before COVID. The coast is simply amazing!! I thoroughly enjoyed the great outdoors. It's a summer resort, so it's the off-season in winter, and it was a shame that all the restaurants I'd researched were closed, but I was able to enjoy the quiet townscape. #breathtaking views #remote islands #remote island travel #breathtaking views around the world #overseas travel #France #Corsica #seaside views #breathtaking views

#bucketlistdestinations Bonifacio’s white limestone cliffs on Corsica’s south tip are backed by maquis—a chest-high scrub of myrtle, lentisk, and moss after winter rain. The Sentier des Douaniers (Customs Officers’ Path) runs from the marina east to Pertusato lighthouse, 4 km one way, 2 hrs, free, no permit. I took the early Ajaccio–Bonifacio bus (20 EUR, card via Corsica Bus Pass app), started at 7:30 before the noon wind. The maquis smells of herbs and rot and salt; moss cushions the rock where freshwater seeps. No water on trail, carry 1.5 L. Card at the Bonifacio bakery for fig tart; cash useless on the path. Mistake: I wore sandals—the limestone is sharp, moss hides ankle snaps. Closed shoes mandatory. Kindness: a Corsican fisherman at Pertusato offered pastis and pointed to the exact ledge where monks hid from pirates in 1520. If the maquis feeds on fire every decade, is the moss the only thing that forgives?

#easytravelpost Bonifacio perches on 70 m white Jurassic limestone at Corsica's southern tip, the Haute Ville citadel above, the marina below, the Bouches de Bonifacio strait to Sardinia. I drove Figari→Bonifacio (20 min), parked above the Haute Ville at 08:30 in May, walked the promenade, paid €5 for the Escalier du Roi d'Aragon (187 cliff-cut steps). The cliff moss is the limestone seep: Hylocomium and Sphagnum in the step-cut drainage where the King's Staircase weeps, Fissidens on the limestone teeth at the waterline grottoes, and the cliff below the cemetery has Metzgeria on the shaded face—white rock, so the moss reads almost fluorescent green. I descended the Escalier at 09:00, the moss silver with dew, the strait flat, Sardinia a blue line 12 km off. Sea-cave boat from the marina €18–€35 (45–90 min), departs 10:00; Lavezzi Islands shuttle €33–€35 RT. Mistake: I climbed the Escalier at 13:00 in July and the limestone radiated 40°C—dawn only, the steps face south. Another: I paid by card at a marina kiosk and it declined—carry €40 cash for the stair entry (small change), shuttles, toilets. Would you walk Bonifacio's white-cliff promenade + Escalier at 08:30 for the limestone-moss stair, or boat the sea caves at 10:00 and skip the climb?

Corsica, the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean and the largest French island, is also the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. The island's terrain is mainly mountainous, with Monte Cinto as the highest peak at 2,710 meters. Forests cover about 20% of the island, and along the coast, there are unique caves, reefs, and beautiful bays. The Gulf of Girolata, Porto Bay, Scandola Nature Reserve, and the Calanques of Piana are all listed as UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites. Best season: May to October is the best time to visit, with warm weather and plenty of sunshine. May, June, and September offer pleasant temperatures, ideal for hiking and other outdoor activities. Transportation: Direct flights are available from Paris or Nice to airports on the island such as Ajaccio, Bastia, and Calvi. Public transportation on the island is limited, so renting a car is highly recommended. Major rental companies like Europcar, Hertz, and Avis are reliable options. Must-visit attractions: The capital Ajaccio is Napoleon’s birthplace, and his ancestral home is worth a visit; Bonifacio, located at the southernmost tip, is perched on cliffs with stunning views; Calvi features a 13th-century citadel and beautiful beaches; Corte in the center was the capital during Corsica’s independence period and is rich in national cultural heritage. Local specialties: Be sure to try Figatellu pork sausage, Brocciu cheese, and Aziminu seafood stew. Pair these with a glass of Patrimonio wine for an exceptional flavor experience. Hiking recommendation: The GR20 trail is considered one of the toughest hikes in France, crossing forests and alpine meadows, and takes about 15 days to complete. Tips: It’s advisable to book accommodations in advance during the busy summer season. Entrance to Napoleon’s house costs 4 euros. When driving, be cautious of the many sharp bends and steep slopes on mountain roads, which require good driving skills.

It was a pleasure to spend some times in this marvellous city located in the south of Corse island (France). During summer time the city is windy and you don’t really feel the heat, the food is nice but not cheap and the nightlife is not that great. It’s a perfect city for a romantic trip if you want some relax and enjoy some sea trips. I will come back again in corse for sure!

#myhiddengems Bonifacio was our best stop in Corsica. This historical fortress town is a coastal treasure. I have such fond memories of roaming it's medical streets and soaking in those extra ordinary views of the sea. Best part, there weren't as many tourists. I typically enjoy walking during my holidays as a way of exploring and seeing much more at my own pace. I had two days of stay here, perhaps another time I shall be back for longer. That was the month of July and it meant the streets and buildings of the town were illuminated with lights. The 9th-century citadel Ville Viele, whose fortified walls lend the town an aura of impregnability. The old centre has been lovingly restored in recent times and offers visitors a fascinating and gently bustling maze of streets and alleyways to explore. Next i was headed to the marine cemetery. The streets were such a lively experience. Brasseries, cafés and bars spill out onto the pavements and piazzas, craft shops and boutiques show off their colourful wares, and churches, chapels and palazzi provide historical and architectural interest. If you are lucky you could find some local performances like the one that happens by the st Francis church. You will also most likely pass by the citadel of aragon which offers great views. Besides the sights, the fresh seafood was a much welcomed addition. With many eateries overlooking the waterside. This itself was a memorable experience. #myhiddengems #corsica #citadel #100waysoftravel #cherryblossom2024 #europeansummer #solotrip #singapore

I recently spent some of my leave checking out Bonifacio in Southern Corsica. Working as airline ground staff back in Chiang Mai, I'm used to being on my feet all day, but this place is a whole different level of leg workout. Let’s start with the basics: the location is stunning, no doubt. The old town is built right on the edge of these massive 70-meter white limestone cliffs looking over the Mediterranean. If you like history and old buildings, the medieval vibes here are legit—the town dates all the way back to 830 AD. But here’s the reality: the cobblestone streets are uneven, crowded, and the restaurants in the main tourist squares are overpriced. Do yourself a favor and wander into the quieter side alleys if you want a decent meal without the tourist tax. Now, the main event: the King of Aragon’s Staircase. It’s 187 steps carved directly into the cliff face at a steep 45-degree angle. Here is how the process actually goes: you have to buy a ticket to go down, they hand you a helmet for safety, and then you start the descent. Going down is fine, but remember—what goes down must climb back up. Climbing those steep, narrow steps back up in the heat is brutal. If you have knee issues or hate heights, skip it. You can get equally good views of the cliffs for free by just walking along the hiking paths at the top. Some practical tips if you plan to visit: 1. Wear real shoes. I saw people trying to climb the steps in flip-flops, which is just asking for an accident. The stones are slippery. 2. Buy your water at a supermarket before you head up to the old town. The shops near the cliffs charge ridiculous prices. 3. If you want the best views of the cliffs without the sweat, just take one of the boat tours from the marina. It’s much easier on the legs.

Actually, you guys know I’m usually a mountain person. Give me a green trail any day and I’m happy. But during my last break, I ended up in Bonifacio, right at the southern tip of Corsica, and man... those white cliffs are something else entirely. We’re talking about massive 300-meter-high limestone cliffs dropping straight into the Mediterranean. To be honest, I didn't even pack my heavy-duty hiking gear for this trip—just had my regular beat-up trail shoes and a basic water bottle, but that was more than enough to do the 1500-meter coastal walk. When you stand right at the edge, the wind is just crazy (in a good way!). As a yoga teacher, I always tell my students to focus on their breath, but standing there? The view literally takes your breath away first, haha! It’s so quiet and vast. Apparently, this place was even mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey. Walking along the path, looking at the ancient town literally dangling over the cliff edge, you can totally see why. It feels like you're stepping into some ancient myth. My advice? Don't rush it. I spent hours just walking and rambling along the trail. If you can, hang around until late afternoon. When the sun starts to go down, the golden light hits those white cliffs and everything just glows. It’s the perfect spot to just sit down, do a bit of quiet meditation, and watch the waves. Seriously, if you ever find yourself near Corsica or even Sardinia (it's just a short ferry ride away, you can practically see it), you have to check this out. Truly spectacular.

Bonifacio, the second largest city on the French island of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea, has a steep chalky limestone outcrop carved into unusual shapes by the ocean on the southern coast of the old town. While exploring this maritime nature reserve by boat you will discover sea caves, the old town perched on a limestone cliff, the Staircase of the Kings of Aragon, the sand and creeks of Fazio and the magnificent beach of Paraguá. #OverseasTravel #Mediterranean #Corsica #IslandHoliday #IslandTour #RiverCruise #SeaTour #staycation #france #corsica #bonifacio #cruise
