Big Things In A Small Town
Small confession: I love how chaotic bizarre American roadside attractions are. While driving from Indianapolis to St. Louis on I70, I pulled off the highway in Marshall, Illinois, because OF COURSE I couldn’t just not see the world’s largest gavel. After seeing the gavel, I found out it’s originally from a town nearby and a tiny bit further down the highway called Casey. The town is tiny, but it is filled with gigantic (usually the world’s biggest) sculptures of ordinary things, including all of the photos in this post, knitting needles, a crochet hook, rocking horse, mouse trap, golf tee, clogs, pitchfork, birdcage, swizzle spoon, and much more. They’re almost all made by local artist and business owner Jim Bolin, and it’s all free! You can even climb in the world’s largest mailbox and ring the world’s largest wind chime, for exactly $0. Most of them are within just a few blocks in the town of less than 2,400, so it’s totally possible to make a super short stop and still see the majority of huge sculptures.
