On the Yaozhou kiln celadon plates, the layered floral patterns are carved with clean, precise knife work. Even through the glass, you can feel the skilled craftsmanship of the artisans. The biggest surprise was the Yuan dynasty bluish-white glazed ewer with a dragon-shaped handle, unearthed locally in Chongqing. The dragon-shaped handle is lively and dynamic. It is hard to imagine it was a household pot in ancient times. The large Ming dynasty blue and white peony jar features full and grand patterns. There is also a rare Song dynasty pottery stamp mold. I had only seen them in books before, but seeing the real thing, I finally understood how ancient ceramic patterns were mass-produced. The oracle bone pits are packed with turtle shell fragments, and the skeletons in the chariot pits are still in their 3,000-year-old positions. The Chinese Character Museum is free. The evolution of Chinese characters is displayed from the 1st to the 4th floor—great for teaching kids about oracle bone script. Cangxiang Street has narrow bluestone roads, and the old house doorstones are polished smooth from being touched. Try the bianfen vegetables with oil pancakes. The vermicelli soaks up the rich broth. Apparently, people were lining up for hours at the National Art Museum of China just to see the famous Changxin Palace Lamp — so long, in fact, that the joke was that you could have travelled from Beijing to Shijiazhuang in the same amount of time. 😂 But honestly… why? The Changxin Palace Lamp is a true superstar of Chinese archaeology, no doubt about that. But it has been on long-term display, so there will always be another chance to see it. The Northern Qi murals from the tomb of Emperor Wenxuan, Gao Yang, on the other hand? That's a completely different story. These aren't the kind of artefacts you can casually assume will still be on display the next time you visit. Who knows when the original murals will be exhibited again — or when you'll get another opportunity to stand in front of the genuine works rather than reproductions and photographs? So if I had to queue for something, I'd choose the murals. And perhaps that's the real reason I made a special trip to Beijing this time. Not for the celebrity everyone was talking about, but for the rare treasures that may quietly disappear from public view again. 🎨🏺 The murals from Gao Yang's tomb are extraordinary in another way, too. They preserve fragments of the visual world of the Northern Qi — figures, costumes, movement and colour — offering a glimpse into a courtly culture that existed more than 1,500 years ago. Some museum visits are about ticking off famous objects. Others are about knowing that this may be your only chance. For these murals, I was willing to make the trip.
