Carved directly into the cliffs, the Yungang Grottoes contain hundreds of Buddhist caves, thousands of statues and enormous stone Buddhas that have survived for more than 1,500 years. Here’s why I think it’s worth visiting 👇 🪨 What Are the Yungang Grottoes? The grottoes were created during the Northern Wei period and are one of the most important examples of early Buddhist cave art in China. As you walk through the complex, you move between small carved chambers and huge caves filled with detailed statues. Some sculptures are tiny. Others are several stories high. That contrast is what makes the site feel so impressive. 🪷 The Giant Buddha Statues The most memorable part for me was seeing the huge Buddha figures carved directly into the rock. You can stand at the entrance of a cave and suddenly realize just how enormous the sculpture inside is. Look closely at the smaller details too — faces, clothing, patterns and decorations cover the walls around many of the main statues. 📸 Take Your Time This isn’t somewhere I’d rush through. Each cave looks different, and the details are easy to miss if you’re only moving from one giant Buddha to the next. I’d stop regularly and look at: 🪷 Buddha faces 🪨 rock carvings ✨ painted details 🏯 cave entrances 📐 symmetry inside the larger grottoes The closer you look, the more interesting it becomes. ⏰ How Much Time Do You Need? The whole complex is larger than it initially appears. 🚗 How to Visit from Datong The Yungang Grottoes are outside central Datong, so the easiest option is usually to travel there by taxi, Didi or private car. Because it’s one of Datong’s major attractions, it’s very easy to make it the main sightseeing stop of the day.
