June Moganshan Summer Escape Guide|2 Hours from Shanghai!
Hey guys! Moganshan in June is really cool! Just 2 hours from Shanghai, I stayed in Moganshan for 3 days. The highest temperature during the day was only 28°C, and you even need a blanket at night. It’s truly a summer paradise for the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai region! In June, Moganshan’s bamboo sea is lush green, the streams are cool, and there are very few people. I’ve put together this summer escape guide for you, and following it will definitely make your trip comfortable!
First, why is June the best time to escape the heat in Moganshan:
1. Fewer people! It’s not summer vacation yet, so there are very few tourists. The whole Moganshan feels like it’s all yours.
2. Cool weather! Moganshan is 5-8°C cooler than the city in June, and the nights are especially cool, so you don’t even need air conditioning.
3. Beautiful scenery! The bamboo sea is at its greenest, the streams are fullest, and the mountains are covered in green, which is very healing.
4. Affordable prices! Homestay prices are half of what they are in summer vacation, offering great value.
Here’s a 3-day, 2-night summer escape itinerary for you, no rush, just pure relaxation:
Day 1: Depart from Shanghai in the morning, arrive in Moganshan in 2 hours. Have lunch in town, then spend the afternoon exploring Yucun Cultural Market. This Republic of China-style town is so charming, with all kinds of beautiful cafes and creative shops—every photo is Instagram-worthy. In June, the plane trees are lush, and sunlight filters through the leaves, creating beautiful light and shadow. I found a cafe by the window to enjoy the view and a coffee—super relaxing. For dinner, try local farmhouse dishes in town, like native chicken and bamboo shoot braised pork—delicious!
Day 2: Purely for cooling off and playing in the water! In the morning, visit the Moganshan Scenic Area. It’s best to take the scenic area shuttle bus because the mountain roads are tough to drive. The scenic area is so cool, surrounded by bamboo sea, walking inside is very comfortable and not hot at all. I recommend going to Jianchi (Sword Pool), where the waterfall is huge and the stream water is very cool—stepping in feels icy and refreshing. Also visit Luhuadang Park, with large lawns perfect for picnics under the shade—very comfortable. In June, the scenic area is very quiet; I spent the whole morning at Jianchi and only saw a few people, the entire waterfall was mine. In the afternoon, visit Biwu Longtan, where the stream water is very clear with many small pools to splash and play in—super cool.
Day 3: Go rafting at Shibadaowan in the morning! The rafting just opened in June, and there are very few people, so no waiting in line. This rafting is so fun—3 kilometers long with a drop of over 100 meters, very thrilling. The stream water is very cool, and you get soaked, which is great for cooling off. When I was rafting, there were only a few boats on the whole river, so you can raft however you want—so awesome. In the afternoon, you can picnic on the lawn by the reservoir or find a cafe to relax in before heading back.
Here are some hidden summer escape spots I recommend:
1. Yulin Dam: This place is perfect for playing in the water! The tiered dams have very clear and shallow water, safe for kids to play. The stream water in June is especially cool and comfortable to step into. It’s very quiet here with almost no tourists, so you can play here all afternoon.
2. Bamboo sea behind Yucun: Don’t just stroll around Yucun street; the back mountain has a large bamboo sea with very few people. Walking inside is very cool and great for photos—it feels like stepping into a movie.
3. Laoling Reservoir: There’s a large lawn by the reservoir, perfect for picnics. The grass is especially green in June, and sitting under the shade, feeling the breeze and looking at the reservoir is very relaxing.
4. Ziling Village: This primitive mountain village has very few people, surrounded by bamboo sea, with streams flowing through the village. It’s very cool and feels like a paradise away from the world.
Food recommendations: The farmhouse dishes in Moganshan are incredibly delicious! Local native chicken stewed with bamboo shoots is very fragrant; bamboo shoot braised pork is especially tender; steamed white fish from the reservoir is very fresh; and local bayberries, which ripen in June, are very sweet.
Tips to avoid pitfalls:
1. It’s recommended to take the scenic area shuttle bus in Moganshan because the mountain roads are difficult to drive and parking is expensive.
2. Bring a change of clothes for rafting because you will get completely soaked.
3. There are many mosquitoes in the mountains, so bring mosquito repellent.
4. It gets very cool at night, so bring a light jacket.
Outfit suggestions: Wear comfortable casual clothes and sneakers, and bring a light jacket for the evening. For water activities, bring slippers and a change of clothes.
Moganshan in June is really comfortable—cool and less crowded, perfect for a weekend summer escape. Sisters in Shanghai, go for it!
