There's a large pond in the center, and the reflection of the surrounding mountains and sky on the water's surface is very impressive. The sight of horses slowly walking across the wide grassland is a unique Aso scene that you rarely see in the city. When visiting Kusasenri, be sure to pay attention to the surrounding scenery. Due to its high altitude, the observation deck offers panoramic views of the majestic Aso mountains. Any slow travel journey in Kumamoto always begins with the crisp, lingering "ding-ding" of the streetcar. Kumamoto's streetcars are the pulse of the city. The wooden floors exude a faint, nostalgic fragrance gathered over the years, as the carriages glide leisurely along grass-paved tracks. The scenery outside the window rolls by like a strip of film: lush camphor trees lining the streets cast a canopy of green, and as the breeze blows, dappled sunlight dances on the passengers like shattered gold. The warm-toned curtains of traditional Japanese confectionery shops along the road and the occasional peek of the Kumamon mascot at street corners all work together in an unhurried rhythm, soothing the restless hearts of travelers. The slowness here isn't stagnation; it's a calm and grounded composure forged through the storms of time. Riding the tram as it rounds the corner below the castle, you look up to see the majestic main keep towering proudly against a backdrop of blue skies and white clouds. Kumamoto Castle, the fortress of fortitude built by Kato Kiyomasa, finds its most captivating feature in the curved stone walls known as "musha-gaeshi" (warrior repellent). The stones grow progressively steeper from bottom to top, creating a highly dynamic geometric aesthetic where the black wooden castle towers intersect with the stark white walls. At the foot of the castle lies "Sakuranobaba Johsaien," radiating a rich Edo-period vibe. Flanked by traditional wooden longhouses, the cobblestone paths reflect the heroic postures of samurai performers—crossing swords with flowing robes, they vividly bring centuries of Sengoku-era passion to life. Stepping into the exhibition hall, looking at the ancient "shachihoko" (mythical roof ornaments) and exquisite craftsmanship, or even the handkerchiefs in the boutique bearing the words "will not fall," everything speaks to the cultural depth of this city: walls may crumble and roof tiles may fall, but its spirit stands forever tall. After the Storm: Earnest Hopes Following the 2026 Earthquake The earth occasionally unleashes its fury, testing the people of this land. Following the trials of 2016, the shadow of an earthquake once again descended upon the beautiful land of Kyushu in the summer of 2026. When the tremors shattered the tranquility, rocks tumbled from the stone walls of the castle keep once more, and the streets bore newfound urgency and scars. Yet, walking through the streets of Kumamoto again, what I saw was not despair, but an awe-inspiring human resilience. In the spaces between evacuation and recovery, neighbors handed out ice water and supplies to one another. Shop owners, having cleared away the debris, still turned on their warm open signs, their eyes brimming with determination. At the street corner, Kumamon in uniform continued to wear that endearing, honest smile, as if declaring to the world: We are still here. The older generations of Kumamoto locals once said that the roots of this city go incredibly deep, much like the camphor trees at the base of Mount Aso. Earthquakes can shake the mountains and stones, but they can never shake the backbone of the Kumamoto people. As the sun sets, the streetcar tracks gleam with golden light in the afterglow, and in the distance, Kumamoto Castle traces a steadfast silhouette against the twilight. The beauty of Kumamoto's scenery lies in the seamless blend of nature and history; the beauty of its culture lies in the coexistence of gentleness and tenacity. This city may be going through yet another round of healing and reconstruction, but just as the cherry blossoms bloom right on schedule every spring along the Sakura-no-koji, the seeds of hope for rebirth have long been sown. I couldn't help but make a promise: when the next spring breeze blows and the stone walls fit perfectly back together once again, I will absolutely hop on that gently swaying streetcar to witness this reborn city in full bloom once more.

Made a last minute decision to go to Mt. Aso in central Kyushu, which consists of several volcanos formed 300,000 - 90,000 years ago. Nakadake is the only active one out of these volcanos and unfortunately someone crashed their plane inside of the crater so now it’s not possible to walk up there. Honestly didn’t expect to see this kind of scenery in Japan. Also coming here probably saved this part of the trip because the weather has been so bad for the last few days. #NO-AI

Schedule Day 1: Arrival + Drive to Yufuin Day 2: Mount Aso self drive to Kumamoto Day 3: Kumamoto Day 4: Kagoshima Day 5: Fukuoka Day 6: Dazaifu Day Trip Main consideration We wanted to have a bit of nature and experience hot spring during the winter season. Therefore, we prioritised Southern Kyushu rather than other cities like Oita or Nagasaki. The next concern was transport. It was an obvious decision to drive around Mount Aso + Takachiho Gorge. Less obvious was where should we start from. Due to an admin error, our original plan to train from Fukuoka to Yufuin was scrapped. Instead we got a car from the airport. This was a good decision because there are many more options in Fukuoka than Yufuin. And we were able to drive straight to our hotel at Yufuin. We then rounded up all other transport with a Kyushu 3-day rail pass. Food Every meal was great. Surprisingly, we enjoyed their black pork more than their famous wagyu beef. Prices were generally on the softer side because of the exchange rates. Shopping Great thing about Kyushu is you still get the nice nature from Mount Aso and Kagoshima but you also have the fantastic shopping belt in Fukuoka. If you've been to Japan a few times and feel like you know the country quite well, I think you should try going south. Kyushu gave me a very different feeling about Japan. The first time I saw pictures of Takachiho Gorge, I had a feeling: I absolutely had to go there. And when I actually set foot in Kyushu, I realized that the most attractive thing about this place wasn't just the scenery. It was the feeling of a more liberal, open Japan, less constrained by familiar rules. The pace of life was also more relaxed. And the nature… was truly breathtaking. Kyushu is a geological area with many active volcanoes, so it has mountain ranges, gorges, lakes, hot springs, and magnificent landscapes created by millions of years of Earth's movement. Mount Aso (Kumamoto Prefecture) and Sakurajima (Kagoshima Prefecture) are two of Japan's most active volcanoes. Thanks to its intense volcanic and geothermal activity, Kyushu also accounts for approximately 35% of Japan's total hot spring (onsen) sources, with famous hot spring towns like Beppu and Yufuin. Much of the island is covered by hills and giant caldera formations created after ancient eruptions. In particular, it's a land steeped in Japanese mythology. There are places where you can not only admire the scenery but also feel like you're stepping into an ancient tale. Initially, I planned to use the Seishun 18 Kippu pass to explore Kyushu by local trains, traveling through different regions. However, after researching, I discovered that the most beautiful places in Kyushu are often not located near train stations or with convenient public transportation. The Takachiho Gorge, mountainous areas, valleys, and volcanic landscapes are often located deep within nature, requiring additional local buses or taxis for transportation, making it quite complicated. Therefore, I chose a day tour with private transportation. If you're looking for a more unique Japan than Kyoto, Tokyo, or Osaka, try Kyushu. You might discover a Japan you've never known before.

Trust me, Kyushu’s vibes are unmatched, especially with those fall colors popping. Kikuchi (熊本県菊池市) Our first scenic pitstop! Kikuchi is famous for its hot springs and beautiful countryside. Kikuchi Valley is a must-see—think lush forests and rivers, especially dreamy in autumn. Address: Kikuchi Valley, 1073-1, Shisui-machi, Kikuchi, Kumamoto. Open year-round. Aso (阿蘇市) Next up: Aso! 🌋 The Aso caldera is an insane sight—massive, otherworldly, and absolutely iconic. Mount Aso is one of the world’s largest active volcanoes, and the viewpoints are pure jaw-drop material. Check out Kusasenri for horseback riding and selfie-worthy views! Takachiho (高千穂町) This place is straight-up mythical! Takachiho Gorge is like walking through a fantasy anime—towering cliffs and waterfalls. Row a boat under Manai Falls (so Insta-ready). Address: Takachiho Gorge, Mitai, Takachiho, Miyazaki. Open daily. Nichinan → Miyazaki (日南市/宮崎市) Cruised down the stunning Nichinan Coast to Miyazaki City. Palms, ocean views, and that laidback energy—chef’s kiss! Don’t sleep on the Udo Shrine, carved into seaside cliffs. Udo Shrine Address: 3232, Oaza Miyaura, Nichinan. 6am–7pm. Aoshima (青島) Cute beach town vibes! Aoshima Shrine sits on a tiny island with the wildest rock formations (nicknamed “Devil’s Washboard”). Great spot for a beach stroll. Address: 2 Chome-13-1 Aoshima, Miyazaki City. Open daily. Hyūga (日向市) This city is famous for its epic surfing beaches and peaceful landscape. It’s a great quick stop to relax and soak in the chill Kyushu life. Yufuin (由布院町) Hello, dreamy hot springs and cuddle-ready cafes! Yufuin oozes cuteness with boutique shops and onsens surrounded by mountains. Don’t miss Lake Kinrin at sunrise—total main character energy. Address: Lake Kinrin, Kawakami, Yufuin, Yufu. Always open. Beppu (別府市) Jigoku-meguri (Hell Tour) is wild—steaming, bubbling hot springs like nothing you’ve ever seen! Beppu is THE spot for quirky hot springs. Address: 559-1 Kannawa, Beppu, Oita. Most “hells” open 8am–5pm. Yanagawa (柳川市) Known for its winding canals and river cruise “punting” rides—giving Venice vibes but uniquely Japanese. Try yanagawa unagi (eel rice)—sooo good! The most iconic feature is: 💦 Manai Falls Standing beside the gorge, you can see the waterfall cascading down from the green forest—truly a dreamlike sight. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🚣 Boating at Takachiho Gorge|A Must-Try! If the weather and water conditions permit, boating is highly recommended! #itinerarycheck The forecast showed heavy rain every day before my trip, so as a planner type, I just decided to "lie flat" and not make any plans. Unexpectedly, the journey was smooth and joyful! If you also prefer a relaxed travel style without rushing or overpacking, save this 5-day, 4-night easygoing Fukuoka guide. Day 1: Arrived at Fukuoka Airport in the afternoon, which is very close to the city center. First, dropped off luggage at the hotel, then visited Canal City where shopping is super convenient. Outdoor enthusiasts can also grab gear at ALPEN. In the evening, I took the "Nakagawa Water Bus," the 6:30 pm Chuo line. The sunset view was fantastic! You can walk from the pier to the main branch of Ichiran Ramen, and the famous Nakagawa Yatai stalls are right next door. Day 2: Spent the whole day at "Uminonakamichi." In the morning, visited the Marine World to see dolphin and sea lion shows, plus super cute otter and penguin feeding sessions. Lunch was at a restaurant inside the park, eating while watching the dolphins swim by. In the afternoon, headed to Seaside Park and rented a bike to ride around at a leisurely pace. There are trampolines, slides, water play, cute little animals, and stunningly clear, glass-like sea water. ° Day 3: Took the train to "Dazaifu." The atmosphere at Tenmangu Shrine was wonderful. Touched the sacred ox, drew a fortune slip, and bought an omamori-it felt very ceremonial. The plum blossom mochi was sweet, soft, and delicious. The Starbucks designed by Kengo Kuma is also a must-visit spot. On the way back, I browsed Yodobashi Camera next to Hakata Station. The 3rd-floor outdoor section has a full range of brands, including Mammut, Arc'teryx, Pata... The Lopia supermarket on the 4th floor is highly recommended! Although it's cash-only, the deals are amazing! A tray of uni was only 70 yen, a huge pizza for just over 20 yen, and a huge selection of sashimi, sushi, and fried foods... Day 4: Spontaneously signed up for a one-day Kyushu tour. Luckily, I got to see Mt. Aso and bought an adorable Kumamon bear made from volcanic ash. At Kusasenri, I went horseback riding. The colored statues at Kumanoza Shrine made me feel like I'd stepped into an anime world. Soaking in the Kurokawa Onsen was incredibly relaxing... and to top it all off, a bottle of cold milk. It's just a short walk from the parking lot to the observation deck, making it incredibly easy to enjoy the spectacular view. The on-site shops sell soft-serve ice cream, light snacks, and souvenirs, making it the perfect pit stop during a scenic drive. If you're visiting Aso, you absolutely have to drop by. It's an unforgettable viewpoint that you'll want to return to again and again.

I caught the Kyushu Odan Express from Kumamoto early this morning, arriving in Aso brimming with anticipation. 🌸 Enjoying Nature in Fukuoka, Japan: Spring at Kyushu 2026 🌸 🛩️ We traveled with Thai Airways, outbound flight TG648, departing from Suvarnabhumi Airport at 12:40 AM and arriving at Fukuoka Airport ✈️ at 8:00 AM. After that, we rented a car from AQ Car Rental. 🚗🚙 1. Nanzoin Temple ⛩️⛩️ Located in Sasaguri, this temple is home to a massive bronze reclining Buddha. It's said to be about the same size as the Statue of Liberty in the USA! The temple is famous for attracting people who come to pray for good fortune, wealth, and luck in lotteries. 💰💸 It also serves as the starting point for the Shingon Buddhist pilgrimage route, a famous sect in Kyushu. It boasts the world's largest bronze reclining Buddha, weighing over 300 tons, measuring 41 meters long, and standing 11 meters high. 2. Yufuin Floral Village 🏡⛲️ A charming little village nestled in the valleys of Oita Prefecture, exuding a European vibe. The streets are lined with quaint brick houses featuring restaurants, souvenir shops, and trinket stores. Beautifully decorated with various kinds of flowers, it offers a lovely, warm, and cozy atmosphere. Opening hours: 9:30 AM – 5:30 PM. Free admission! 🎫🎟️ 3. Kuju Flower Park (or Kuju Hana Park) 🌺🌷🌸 A massive park covering over 49 acres (approx. 198,293 square meters). The park features a wide variety of trees and around 500 species of flowers, totaling a staggering 3 million blooms! From mid-May to early June, the park hosts a romantic colorful flower festival showcasing 11 types of spring flowers. Inside the park, you'll also find various restaurants, cafes, snacks, and souvenir shops. Admission fee: 1,300 yen per person. 🎫 4. Aso Mountain Volcano (Mount Aso) 🌋🌋 Located in Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan, it is the largest active volcano in the country and has one of the largest calderas in the world. Currently, the volcanic activity is at a low level. Our first sightseeing spot was the Kusasenri Observatory (about a 500-meter walk), followed by the Kusasenri grasslands. At the Kusasenri grasslands, horseback riding services are available for tourists. 🐎🐎 5. Takachiho Gorge ❄️🛶 Takachiho is a small town in Miyazaki Prefecture in the Kyushu region. The town is renowned for its stunning nature and ancient cultural beliefs passed down for thousands of years. Takachiho Gorge is arguably the town's most famous tourist attraction. Visitors can hike to see the waterfall from a height of 80-100 meters, or choose to view it from below by taking a boat ride through Takachiho Gorge. 6. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine ⛩️⛩️ This is one of the most important Shinto shrines in Fukuoka, Japan, serving as the head shrine for over 12,000 Tenmangu shrines nationwide. It is highly renowned for blessings related to education, academic success, and wisdom, drawing over 10 million students and tourists each year to pay their respects. The bronze ox statue 🐂🐮 (Sacred Ox): Legend has it that after Sugawara no Michizane passed away, the ox pulling his funeral carriage stopped at this exact spot and refused to budge. As a result, he was buried there, and the shrine was built over his grave. It is believed that rubbing the head of the ox statue will clear your mind, grant you wisdom, and bring you academic success. For health issues, rub the part of the ox's body that corresponds to your ailment, and it is believed you will be healed. Operating hours: Open daily from 6:30 AM – 6:30 PM. The absolute highlight of a Kumamoto trip is a Mount Aso day tour! Don't let complicated transport stress you out. Start early by taking the JR Hohi Main Line from Kumamoto Station to Aso Station. Hop on the "Aso Mountaintop Loop Bus" right in front of the station to comfortably explore the summit's main attractions, including the Nakadake Crater and Kusasenri. The buses don't run very frequently, so checking the schedule in advance is key to a smooth trip. The most crucial step is checking the "volcanic activity"! Be sure to check the volcanic alert level on the Aso City website or the station information board the day before and the morning of your trip. Don't be too disappointed if crater access is restricted due to a raised alert level. You can still enjoy horseback riding or taking a stroll through the lush green pastures of Kusasenri, or experience the breath of the earth at the nearby Aso Volcano Museum. If there are restrictions, summit-bound buses might run on a reduced schedule or take detours, so be smart and ask the station staff for alternative routes. Thorough preparation is the real secret to fully soaking in the breathtakingly majestic views of Aso.
