Egypt Trip 34 On January 16, 2026, the team’s final stop in Alexandria was led by local guide Wang Li, who took everyone to the Qaitbay Citadel located at the end of the Corniche at 3:15 PM. Although I have been here three times before, this was my first time entering the castle to explore inside. It felt really great. The ancient citadel of Alexandria usually refers to the Qaitbay Citadel, which is one of Alexandria’s important historical landmarks. The castle is built in the Mamluk style, blending Islamic art with medieval fortification principles. The outer walls are made of local limestone, decorated with exquisite Islamic calligraphy, and feature defensive elements such as arrow slits and cannon openings. The castle is square-shaped, with the main tower standing 30 meters tall and 17 meters on each side, surrounded by barracks, an armory, and a mosque. The castle was constructed between 1477 and 1479 by order of the Mamluk Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qaitbay to defend against the threat of the Ottoman Empire. It was built on the site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, using the ruins of the lighthouse as building materials.
