DAY VIEW OF THE FORTRESS 🏰 The extravagant confection of the Fishermen's Bastion (Halászbástya) in the Castle District was planned to offset adjacent Matthias Church, which was renovated by the same architect, Frigyes Schulek. Schulek designed an attractive promenade topped with seven cone-topped towers, symbolizing the Magyar chieftains who settled in this portion of the Carpathian Basin in the late 800s, using the remaining sections of the stronghold that stretched along this panoramic edge of Castle Hill. The bastion, which is 140 meters long and named after the medieval fishermen's guild that defended this stretch of the wall, offers spectacular views of the Danube and Pest cityscape. During the autumn and winter, the Fishermen's Bastion is open and free to explore all day.
