New Zealand 10-Day Itinerary D2 | Mount Cook

🇳🇿 Day 2 of the South Island trip in New Zealand is here! Today we started the "eyes in heaven, butts suffering" mode! From Lake Tekapo to Mount Cook, then straight on to Fox Glacier town. Although the driving time is long, the scenery along the way is breathtaking! The entire trip has zero paid attractions, so save this now! 🚗 Route Overview (p17) Morning: Lake Tekapo → Mt Cook Alpine Salmon Farm (salmon shop) → Mount Cook (hiking) Afternoon: Mount Cook → Fox Glacier town Duration: Long driving time, it’s recommended to take turns driving with two people or adjust the itinerary based on your situation! ✨ Highlights Along the Way: Lake Tekapo -> Mount Cook Road (p2-p7) Scenery: This stretch of road is simply “stunning” — any stop makes for a perfect desktop wallpaper! Mt Cook Alpine Salmon Farm (p4) Location: On the way to Mount Cook Must-eat: Fresh salmon sashimi! Tastes great and is affordable! Experience: Buy a portion and eat by the lake — pure life enjoyment! Tips: Make sure it’s this one! They farm freshwater salmon! 🏔️ Mount Cook National Park: Enjoy it for free! (p8-15) The charm of Mount Cook National Park is not only in its towering peaks but also in its rich free hiking trails! Trail options: There are 3 free and easy hiking trails here Time: We chose the fastest round-trip trail, about 40 minutes total, perfect for those with limited time or who don’t want to hike too long. Highlights: See unique lakes formed by glacier meltwater and feel the awe of snow-capped mountains up close! Gear: Just wear comfortable shoes 📷 Photography Tips Tamron 28-200! Use telephoto for small people in big landscapes, stand farther back 📍 Heading to Fox Glacier town: Driving time: Mount Cook -> Fox Glacier town takes about 6 hours! Route suggestions: ✅ If planning glacier hiking: Strongly recommend staying one night in Fox Glacier town! Many motels offer great value, affordable and comfortable. ❌ If not doing glacier hiking: Consider staying in Wanaka directly, so you can enjoy an extra afternoon there and avoid long driving fatigue. Fox Glacier town accommodation recommendations Motel options: There are many motels; we stayed at Sunset Motel (p15), about 500+ per night, fully equipped My experience: The motel we stayed at was very nice, clean, convenient parking, no need to fuss over expensive hotels! 🧡 Warm Tips Driving: South Island roads are beautiful but mostly two-lane two-way, drive safely and stop at viewpoints for photos. Time: Recommend starting early! Accommodation: Book Fox Glacier accommodation in advance, especially during peak season!
