Celebrate the sunset on the shortest day of the year!

On December 21, 2025, from 9:00 PM to 11:15 PM UTC, Cockroach Bay Nature Preserve will host the "Winter Solstice Sunset Hike" event. Participants are asked to gather at the main parking lot of the preserve, located south of the office, at coordinates 27°41'28.7" N, 82°30'05.7" W. The hike will be led by a member of the Environmental Land Management team along the "Horseshoe Crab Hustle" trail. Participants will ascend to the summit of Cockroach Mountain to enjoy the magnificent sunset views over the preserve. This hike offers a unique opportunity to observe local wildlife such as bobcats, wood storks, and eagles in their natural habitat. Everyone is welcome to join this special event to celebrate the arrival of the winter solstice and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature at the turning of day and night.
