A city steeped in history there is plenty to see and do in Winchester. Ancient capital and former seat of King Alfred the Great. The South Downs Way starts here. This National Long distance trail is a former bronze age trading route that continues for 160 km/100 miles as far as Eastbourne in the county of East Sussex. It's a long-distance footpath and bridleway offering diverse terrain and beautiful scenery, popular with walkers and cyclists. The city of Winchester attracts tourists from far and wide. There is no best time to go since it receives hundreds of thousands of visitors throughout the year. However, it boasts a wide range of pubs and restaurants and there are fine walks in and around the city. It is known for its fine medieval Cathedral.
