mianyang museum is located at the foot of fule mountain. the museum has three floors. the main exhibits are on the first and second floors. the first floor includes history and culture, nature, and intangible cultural heritage. the second floor features cliff tombs, han dynasty horses, and money trees. mianyang is in the northwest of the sichuan basin and is known as the "throat of the shu road." the theme of mianyang’s historical and cultural exhibits is "a thousand years looking back at ancient mianzhou," introducing mianyang’s long history. people lived here as early as the paleolithic era. yuli township in beichuan is one of the legendary birthplaces of dayu. many sites related to dayu are here, such as yumu pond and paomaping. the jinniu road, which crosses bashan and leads north to hanzhong, is an important part of the ancient shu road. mianyang is at a key point on the jinniu road. going north through jianmen pass leads to the hanzhong basin, while going south through baima pass reaches the chengdu plain. han dynasty artifacts are the most abundant in the museum’s collection, related to the fact that the administrative center of guanghan commandery was within mianyang’s territory. the most notable piece is a wooden model of human meridians excavated from the western han tomb in yongxing. it is the earliest known human medical model in china. nineteen red lines are painted vertically on the surface, eight on the front. research shows these represent the body’s twelve meridians. traditional classic architecture in mianyang is famous in sichuan and across china. from the han dynasty stone gates, to the tang dynasty yuewang tower, the song dynasty flying heavens treasury, the yuan dynasty pantuo hall, and the ming dynasty bao’en temple and qiqushan grand temple, these are all highlights in the history of ancient chinese architecture. besides the poet immortal li bai, ouyang xiu, one of the eight great prose masters of the tang and song dynasties, was also born here. the mountains and rivers of ancient mianzhou nurtured a group of legendary figures who shine in chinese cultural history, composing a timeless chapter for ancient mianzhou. cliff tombs are graves carved into cliffs or rock layers. from the eastern han to the six dynasties period, cliff tombs were popular in sichuan and neighboring areas for about five centuries. han people treated death as seriously as life, so funerals were elaborate, involving many people and great expense. after 2,000 years, these cliff tombs are like treasure troves of cultural relics, allowing modern people to see scenes of ancient life. money trees were burial items popular in han and wei dynasty tombs, consisting of a tree trunk and base. the trunk is made of bronze, and the base is usually ceramic or stone. money trees have rich symbolism and deep meaning, representing a perfect artistic expression of people’s spiritual world and worldly beliefs. mianyang museum is one of china’s museums with the largest collection of han dynasty horses, including a grand lacquered wooden chariot and horse formation, a rare large bronze horse, and robust large ceramic horses. the strength of the han empire was closely linked to the establishment of horse policies and the prosperity of horse breeding. horses played a key role in wars against the xiongnu.
