Portions are generous and kid-friendly. ⚠️ Avoid Liyuan Garden in the afternoon—it’s crowded and the tickets are pricey. Instead, head to Jinjiangli, which is less crowded and has more original diaolou, great for a slow stroll. Recommended for kids in elementary school or older who understand some history. Too young and climbing the stairs isn’t safe. 2️⃣ Xilingol League | Inner Mongolia Ulagai Grassland is quieter than Hulunbuir and better for kids to run free. 📍 Head straight to the Jiuguwan Scenic Area, where wildflowers blanket the grassland in summer. ⏰ After 6 PM, the slanting light turns Jiuguwan into a silver ribbon. Kids can run along the boardwalk looking for marmot burrows. ⚠️ Don’t rent horses—they’re expensive and kids might not sit still. Instead, spend 20 yuan on a kite. The strong grassland wind will send it soaring high as soon as you let go. If you have time, drive further in to visit a herder’s home for a meal. Hand-pulled meat with milk tea is delicious, and kids will get messy eating it. 🚄 Fly to Xilinhot, then drive 2 hours to the grassland. July and August are peak season, but going in early September at summer’s end means greener grass and half the crowds. 3️⃣ Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture | Guizhou This is a great place for kids to learn culture—not in a classroom. 📍 During the day, explore Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village. Don’t just crowd the viewing platforms. Wander into the alleys where every doorstep hangs corn and chili peppers, grandmas are embroidering, and kids can watch for a long time. 🍜 For lunch, try Miao-style sour fish soup. It’s tangy and spicy but mild enough for kids. ⏰ After 5 PM, climb the small hill opposite the village to watch the lights come on. It’s less crowded than the viewing platforms and you can hear the silver jewelry clinking from below. 📍 The next day, visit Zhaoxing Dong Village, much quieter than Xijiang. The Dong grand song is alive here. If there’s a performance, kids will be curious how the elders hit such high notes. ⚠️ You can visit Zhenyuan Ancient Town on the way, but don’t stay on the main street—it’s noisy. Find a riverside inn to fall asleep to the sound of water. If your kids are in elementary school, consider hiking to Xianghuoyan—a less popular spot with shallow streams perfect for summer wading. The path is slippery, so watch the kids closely. 4️⃣ Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai Riyue Mountain and Guide National Geopark are two very different places but close enough to visit together. 📍 Riyue Mountain isn’t very high, but the plateau’s blue sky and white clouds will wow kids seeing them for the first time. It’s windy on the mountain, so bring a jacket. ⏰ Morning is the best time for good light. Prayer flags flutter in the wind, and kids can run around without feeling short of breath. ⚠️ There’s not much to see inside Riyue Pavilion. It’s better to lie on the hillside and feel the wind through the grass. 📍 From Riyue Mountain, drive 2 hours to Guide National Geopark. The Danxia landforms look like someone spilled a palette of red, yellow, and green layers. Kids will naturally switch to “geography mode,” picking up stones and asking why the mountains are red. 🍜 In Guide County, try “Ma Zhong stir-fry”—hand-pulled lamb with a bowl of yogurt. It’s great value. 🚄 Driving is easiest. Starting from Xining, you can visit both places in one day without rushing. 5️⃣ Chengde | Hebei The Mountain Resort was the emperor’s summer retreat. In summer, it’s at least 5 degrees cooler than Beijing. 📌 Avoid the crowded Lizheng Gate. Enter through Chengguan Gate instead. Start with the plains area—meadows and the deer park where kids can feed sika deer that aren’t afraid of people. ⏰ Before 10 AM, the air still smells of dew. Walking by the lake, the breeze feels cool. At noon, head to the mountains and take the circular mountain bus. Get off at “Four-sided Cloudy Mountain” stop to see the whole resort outline. Kids will ask, “Does the emperor get tired climbing so high every day?” ⚠️ You can visit Yanyu Tower and Jinshan Pavilion but don’t climb them. The steps are narrow and kids might get hurt. 📍 The next day, visit Jinshanling Great Wall. It’s shorter than Mutianyu but wilder. It opens at 5 AM. Be the first to climb and watch the wall turn golden in the morning light. Kids can lie on the wall counting beacon towers. 🍜 Chengde’s local food is salty. Order youmian wowo (oat noodles) and almond tofu, which kids can handle. 6️⃣ Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Sichuan Xinduqiao and Mugecuo near Kangding bloom with wildflowers in summer. Kids will think it’s the Alps from Heidi and Grandpa. 📍 Xinduqiao is known as a photographer’s paradise, but don’t just take pictures. In the morning, walk by the river and watch horses grazing. Kids can imitate sheep calls, and the sheep will look back. 🍜 Have lunch in town with Tibetan food—yak meat buns and butter tea. Kids might not like it at first, but the meat inside the buns is tasty. Three or four buns are no problem. 📍 Mugecuo’s lake reflects snow-capped mountains like a painting. Take a boat with kids to the other side where you can soak in a natural hot spring. The water temperature is just right, and kids can play for half an hour. ⚠️ Daocheng Yading is too far and causes serious altitude sickness. Don’t take young kids. If you must go, stick to the short route from Chonggu Temple to Pearl Lake—2 hours round trip with beautiful views. 📌 Hailuogou Glacier is worth seeing, but the glacier tongue may melt during summer. Check official updates before you go. Kids might not like it, but the red rock beach under the glacier looks like Mars in photos. 7️⃣ Urumqi | Xinjiang Taking kids to the Grand Bazaar isn’t about shopping but broadening their horizons. 📍 The International Grand Bazaar smells of cumin from the baked bun stalls drifting half a block away. Kids will be dazzled by colorful pottery and handmade carpets. ⏰ Go after 5 PM when the light is softer. Buy a naan and snack while strolling. The pedestrian street is liveliest at night, with Uyghur elders dancing in the square. The strong rhythm will get kids moving too. ⚠️ Don’t buy raisins on the main street—they’re expensive. Turn into the side alleys for half the price. 📍 The next day, visit Nanshan Pasture, an hour’s drive from the city. Wildflowers bloom in summer, kids can ride horses, and parents can fly kites. ⚠️ Dabancheng is windy even in summer. If you bring kids, remember hats so they don’t get blown away. There’s an old train station perfect for photos, but don’t stay too long. 8️⃣ Dongying | Shandong The Yellow River estuary isn’t a noisy beach but a unique wetland ecology lesson. 📍 At the Yellow River Estuary Ecotourism Area, take the electric cart at the entrance and see birds and reed marshes along the way. ⏰ Arrive around 4 PM for the softest light. Standing on the boardwalk watching the Yellow River flow into the sea, kids will widen their eyes and say it looks like a palette of yellow and blue. ⚠️ Don’t let kids walk deep into the reeds—there are many mosquitoes. The park has a birdwatching pavilion where you can rent binoculars. Kids can spot red-crowned cranes and swans. 🍜 Dongying’s seafood is cheap. Go to “Haigang Grand Restaurant” and order mixed fish soup and salt-and-pepper mantis shrimp. Kids will lick their fingers clean. 📌 If you have time, visit the Sunzi Cultural Park nearby. It has large playgrounds, so even kids who aren’t into history can play for hours. Each of these 8 places has its own charm. Some love the vast grasslands, some prefer the carved beams and painted rafters of Jiangnan, and others enjoy watching the sunset at the Yellow River estuary.
