Tasmania was one of those places that completely changed my idea of Australia. Before visiting, I imagined it would mainly be about mountains and wildlife, but once I arrived, I discovered a much more diverse landscape—rugged coastlines, crystal-clear beaches, dramatic mountains, peaceful lakes and charming little towns. What I loved most was how untouched many parts of Tasmania felt. I started my journey in Hobart, where I enjoyed the relaxed waterfront atmosphere and explored the city's historic streets. Compared with Melbourne and Sydney, Hobart felt much quieter, which was exactly what I wanted after spending time in bigger cities. From Hobart, I headed out to explore Tasmania's incredible natural scenery. 🌊 Freycinet National Park One of my favorite places was Freycinet National Park. The first time I saw Wineglass Bay from the lookout, I honestly couldn't believe the colors. The curved white beach, turquoise water and surrounding mountains created one of the most beautiful coastal views I've experienced in Australia. The hike to the lookout wasn't particularly long, but I definitely recommend wearing proper shoes and taking your time. I stayed at the viewpoint longer than expected because the scenery kept changing as the sunlight moved across the bay. 🏔️ Cradle Mountain Another highlight was Cradle Mountain. The landscape here felt completely different from the coastline. There were alpine trails, ancient forests, rocky peaks and peaceful lakes. Even though the weather changed quickly, that actually made the scenery feel even more dramatic. I remember standing beside Dove Lake with Cradle Mountain in the background. The water was incredibly calm, and for a few minutes there was almost complete silence. That was one of those travel moments that photographs simply can't fully capture. 🐧 Wildlife & Wild Coastlines Tasmania also surprised me with its wildlife. Depending on where you travel, you may encounter wallabies, wombats, echidnas and even little penguins. Seeing wildlife in a natural environment rather than behind glass was one of the experiences I appreciated most. The coastline was another highlight. Places like Bay of Fires offered completely different scenery again, with white sand, clear blue water and striking orange-red rocks along the coast. 📍 My Tasmania Travel Tips 🚗 Rent a car if possible. Tasmania is much easier to explore independently, especially if you want to visit national parks and remote coastal areas. 🥾 Bring proper hiking shoes. Even shorter trails can become muddy or slippery depending on the weather. 🌦️ Always check the weather before hiking. Conditions can change quickly, especially around Cradle Mountain. 🧥 Pack layers. Even during warmer months, mornings and evenings can feel surprisingly cold. 📸 Allow extra time for photography. Tasmania is full of unexpected viewpoints, and rushing between attractions would be a shame. 🦘 Drive carefully at dawn and dusk. Wildlife can be active around roads, particularly outside the main towns. 🗺️ Don't try to see everything in a short trip. Tasmania looks manageable on a map, but driving between different regions takes time. ❤️ My Experience What stayed with me most about Tasmania wasn't one particular attraction. It was the feeling of space. There were moments when I was driving through empty roads with mountains in the distance, stopping beside a lake with nobody around, or standing on a beach listening to nothing but the waves. Tasmania felt slower, quieter and more raw than many other places I'd visited in Australia. If you're looking for a destination where you can combine road trips, hiking, wildlife, mountains, beaches and incredible scenery, Tasmania is somewhere I'd definitely recommend. At sunset, its colors continuously shift from orange-red to deep crimson, a sight so beautiful it will take your breath away. Honestly, I want to say: don’t blindly discourage it! July and August in Australia are the best months for regular travelers! Avoid the crowds, get half-price flights and hotels, enjoy the peak whale-watching season, and experience the clearest Great Barrier Reef all year ✨ Just avoid the south and focus on the north, and you’ll have an amazing trip!! After reading this, you won’t have to hesitate about going to Australia ✨ ❌ Let’s be honest first | The real reasons to avoid Australia in July and August (no sugarcoating) Many people get it wrong because they pick the wrong cities!! 1. The south is freezing (Sydney/Melbourne/Great Ocean Road/Tasmania) Australian winter! Daytime temps 5–16℃, with fierce winds 💨 The Great Ocean Road wind freezes your hands and face, the beach is gray and gloomy No summer blue skies or clear seas, photos are hard to get right 2. You'd be hard-pressed to name a world-famous landmark, and it lacks those quirky local customs that everyone loves to joke about. When you chat about Melbourne, you’ll probably bring up the coffee, the year-round sporting events, and the endless festivals. But if you really think about it, none of these are inherently "Melbourne." Australia basically doesn't grow coffee beans, and these sports weren't invented here either. Rather than being local specialties, they feel more like mandatory puzzle pieces global pop culture had to drop into the Southern Hemisphere. Take the QVM (Queen Victoria Market), for instance, which every travel guide calls a "must-visit," especially for its special Wednesday night market. But when I walked in, I realized it had almost nothing to do with Melbourne. Instead, it felt like a World Expo—every country showing off its own food. Chinese dim sum, Middle Eastern kebabs, Italian gelato... The most "Aussie" thing about it was probably just swapping the original price tags into Australian dollars. When you get tired, you just grab a seat on a roadside bench, watching a family picnic on the grass while kids chase each other around a fountain. Haters will say Melbourne lacks depth and that the CBD is noisy and chaotic. But there's a reason it consistently ranks high on the world's most livable cities lists—maybe it's precisely because you can do whatever you want here. It doesn't have the heavy, established cultural baggage of the 20th century, but rather a constant collision of 21st-century trends. Plus, the coffee really is phenomenal—who cares where it's produced? After struggling to buy anything at QVM, I rushed over to the South Melbourne Market on the other side of the Yarra River.
