Huma travel guide and discussion

While the south is still transitioning from summer to autumn, the forests of Heilongjiang have already been painted by the autumn wind into a golden and crimson oil painting. The autumn scenery here is grand and majestic, featuring winding blue rivers, gilded birch forests, and serene wetlands, truly deserving the praise of "rivaling Xinjiang and comparable to Switzerland." I. Prime Fall Foliage Viewing Period (Extremely Short, Miss It and Wait a Year) Heilongjiang's autumn colors advance from north to south, with the overall optimal window being only mid-September to early October (about 20 days): · Greater Khingan / Mohe: September 10 - September 25 (earliest autumn, prone to early snow). · Lesser Khingan / Yichun: September 20 - October 10 (the most colorful "Five-Color Mountain" spectacle). II. Analysis of Four Core Check-in Spots 1. Mohe (Extreme North Golden Autumn) · Features: China's northernmost point, with gilded birch forests stretching across the land and a winding border river. Clear autumn nights offer a chance to witness the aurora and the first snow. · Must-visit: Beiji Village (Arctic Village), Beihong Village, Longjiang First Bend (a winding golden bay), and Nine Bends and Eighteen Curves. · Best time: Mid to late September. 2. Yichun (Core of the Five-Color Mountain) · Features: Located in the heart of the Lesser Khingan Mountains, where red pine, larch, and birch interweave to create the most layered colorful forests, with flocks of migratory birds in the wetlands. · Must-visit: Wudai Highway (Golden Tunnel), Tangwang River Forest Sea and Strange Rocks, Jinshan Deer Park (yellow autumn grass and deer herds), and Wuying National Forest Park. · Best time: Late September to early October. 3. Lesser Khingan Mountains (Forest Highway) · Features: Runs through the Yichun area, offering the experience of "driving through the forest, traveling within a painting." Blue lakes contrast with golden meadows, providing an excellent self-driving experience. · Activities: Drive along the G222 or Wudai Highway, checking out wetlands, birch forests, and winding roads. 4. Greater Khingan Mountains (Vast Wetlands) · Features: Covers a wider area than Mohe, boasting spectacular river meanders (like the Nine Bends and Eighteen Curves), a rich primeval forest atmosphere, and extremely open views. · Must-visit: Connect Jiagedaqi, Huma, and Mohe to enjoy the vast taiga forest autumn colors. III. Classic Route Recommendation (7-8 Day Autumn Chase Loop) It is recommended to follow the autumn colors "from north to south": D1 Arrive in Harbin (rest and explore Central Street, Saint Sophia Cathedral) D2 Harbin → Yichun (first glimpse of the Lesser Khingan, stay in the forest city) D3 Yichun in-depth tour: Wudai Highway → Jinshan Deer Park → Tangwang River (stay in Tangwang) D4 Tangwang → Wuying / Maolan Gully → Wudalianchi (enjoy the volcanic barrier lake autumn scenery along the way) D5 Wudalianchi → Jiagedaqi (enter the heart of the Greater Khingan Mountains) D6 Greater Khingan → Mohe (golden forest seas along the way, check out Nine Bends and Eighteen Curves) D7 Mohe in-depth: Longjiang First Bend → Beiji Village → Beihong Village D8 Depart from Mohe (or fly back to Harbin) If time is limited (4-5 days): Focus on the Yichun + Lesser Khingan loop, which has the most vibrant autumn colors and good road conditions; or focus on the Mohe + Greater Khingan extreme north route. IV. Practical Travel Tips · Clothing: The temperature difference between day and night is extreme, with mornings and evenings close to winter. Pack a hardshell jacket/light down jacket, fleece, and long pants. A single layer may suffice at noon. Staying warm and windproof is key. · Transportation: Self-driving or hiring a car (an SUV is better) is highly recommended, as the roads themselves are part of the scenery. Avoid driving at night in forest areas. · Accommodation: Extremely popular during the National Day holiday. Book rooms in Yichun and Mohe at least 1 month in advance. Consider less-known places like Xunke (along the G222) to avoid the crowds. · Photography: Sunny days with blue skies and golden forests offer the most saturated colors. Morning mist is common over wetlands in the early morning. Aerial shots of the winding rivers are stunning. · Food: Iron pot stew, Qiqihar BBQ (if taking the western route), wild mountain vegetables, forest mushrooms, and Russian-style Western food (in Harbin/border areas). 📌 Summary: Autumn in Heilongjiang is a brief but ultimate visual feast. Seize the golden period from September to October, go to the Greater Khingan for the winding rivers, to Yichun for the Five-Color Mountains, and to Mohe to chase the extreme north's autumn snow. This black soil land will not disappoint you.

Girls, I've been back for a week, and I'm still scrolling through the photos of those golden birch forests on my phone 🍂 Before I left, friends tried to talk me out of it: "Going to the Greater Khingan Mountains in October–November? The leaves will all be gone, it'll be freezing, don't go 🙅‍♀️" I didn't listen. But the moment I stepped into the forests of Mo'erdaoga, the golden larches were still holding on, and the silver trunks of the birch trees against the carpet of caramel-colored fallen leaves, with morning mist rising slowly from the river 🌫️ I wanted to kick myself right then and there—why didn't I come sooner 😭 So, this post has a "don't go" title, but my body tells the truth 🙋‍♀️ You can go to the Greater Khingan Mountains in October–November; it's just that once you go, you'll get hooked, and it's hard to quit when you get back 💊 ✨ Why I "don't recommend" going in October–November 🍁 The tail end of the "five-flower mountain" colors is better than you'd think. The official forecast for the peak viewing period is mid-September to early October, and the Greater Khingan Mountains are the first to enter the peak autumn season 📅 When I went in early October, the larches were still putting on a golden show. Although the birches had lost some leaves, the silver trunks against the golden carpet created a quiet, "forest carpet" feel 🍂 Late autumn in the Greater Khingan Mountains isn't about withering; it's a different kind of tenderness~ 🌫️ Morning mist + forest sea, a late autumn exclusive vibe. In the mornings in October, a thin mist rises from the river, making the whole forest look like it's soaked in milk 🥛 When the morning mist swirls over the Genhe River source wetland and the Jiliu River in Mo'erdaoga, every shot looks like an ink wash painting 📸 You can't get this vibe when it's crowded during peak season! 🌌 Fewer people, the whole forest is yours. Once the National Day holiday is over, the tourist crowds retreat 🚶‍♀️ You don't have to fight for a seat on the Mo'erdaoga forest train, and you can stand on the birch forest boardwalk for ten minutes in peace, listening to the wind blowing the leaves 🍃 That feeling of "the whole Greater Khingan Mountains belongs to me" is a much better experience than in peak season 💯 ❄️ If you're lucky, you might catch the first snow and rime. If the temperature drops in mid-to-late October, Huma and Tahe might see their first snow and rime ❄️ Rime hanging on the birch branches, mixed with the yellow leaves that haven't completely fallen, creates a "border between autumn and winter" scene that has more layers and storytelling than a pure snow scene ✨ ✨ Treasure spots you only know about once you've been 🚂 Mo'erdaoga, the forest train traveling through the golden sea of trees. It's not called a "hidden gem deep in the Greater Khingan Mountains" for nothing 🚂 The forest train travels through golden pine forests, the Jiliu River glitters at the bottom of the valley, and Bailu Island lies quietly in the sea of trees 🦌 Take a ride on the little train, and the scenery outside the window is like a flowing oil painting; you won't want to put your phone down 📱 🏞️ Genhe River source wetland, morning mist over the river. The Genhe River writes autumn into reindeer and starry skies 🦌 In the early morning at the Genhe River source wetland, thin mist rises from the river, and the larches on both banks are reflected in the water, so quiet you can hear your own breathing 🤫 Nearby is the Aoluguya Reindeer Tribe, where you can feed the reindeer up close; the Ewenki reindeer culture is more interesting than you'd imagine~ 🌊 First Bay of the Heilongjiang River, the Ω-shaped bend with colorful forests. Climb over 900 steps to look down, and the Heilongjiang River draws a perfect Ω-shaped bend here, with the primitive forests of Russia on the other side 🇷🇺 In autumn, the colorful forests on both banks are layered, and the river looks like a green ribbon 💚 You'll be out of breath climbing the steps, but the moment you stand at the top, it's all worth it! 🍂 Ergun Wetland, the autumn profile of Asia's No. 1 wetland. Climb to the viewing platform to look down, and the winding Genhe River travels between golden meadows and shrubs, like a flowing ribbon of light ✨ It's most beautiful in the early morning when the thin mist hasn't dissipated; photography enthusiasts can spend an entire morning here 📷 🗺️ Itinerary (7-day highlights version). The Greater Khingan Mountains are too big, so I recommend using Hailar as your starting and ending point and taking the northern route 🗺️ The distances between attractions are long, so chartering a car or self-driving is the best way 🚗 Day 1|Hailar gathering. Arrive in Hailar, have a copper pot mutton hot pot, and recharge 🍲 Day 2|Hailar → Ergun → Genhe. Morigele River → Ergun Wetland → Aoluguya Reindeer Tribe to feed reindeer 🦌 → Stay in Genhe Day 3|Genhe → Mo'erdaoga. The Genbai Highway is a golden forest sea all the way 🍁 Take the little train at Mo'erdaoga National Forest Park 🚂 Stay in Shiwei or Linjiang Day 4|Linjiang → Border route → Heishantou. Linjiang morning mist → Drive along the border highway → Ride horses and watch the sunset in Heishantou 🐎 → Stay in a yurt ⛺ Day 5|Heishantou → Return to Hailar. Grassland private ranch → Return to Hailar to rest Day 6|Hailar → Arxan. If you have enough time, head south to Arxan National Forest Park; the Camel Peak Heaven Pool and the Unfrozen River are the highlights 🏔️ Day 7|Arxan → Return. Rose Peak → Return to Hailar for your departure 🚄 ⚠️ A few honest words. 🧥 The onion-layering method is the rule for survival: In October, the Greater Khingan Mountains can drop to 0°C or even below at night, and around 15°C at noon when there's sun 🥶 Bring thin down jackets/3-in-1 jackets, fleece jackets, and thick pants! Shoes must be non-slip and waterproof 👟 💧 Moisturizing and sun protection are essential: The northern forest region is very dry in autumn, so be sure to bring highly moisturizing skincare products, lip balm, and facial masks 💄 The UV rays are also strong, so sunglasses and sunscreen are must-haves 🕶️ 🚗 Self-driving note: The attractions along the way are far apart, and the daily drive can be 4–6 hours, so plan your gas stations and accommodation in advance ⛽ The signal in the forest area is intermittent, so download offline maps in advance 🗺️ 📅 Best window: If you're coming for the "five-flower mountain" colors, mid-September to early October is the best period 📆 After mid-October, the leaves will fall faster, but you get a quiet forest and possible first snow, depending on what you want more~ 🍜 What to eat: Iron pot stewed goose, cold-water fish, and blueberry products. Genhe's blueberry juice and dried blueberries are local specialties; they are sweet and sour, appetizing, and make great souvenirs 🫐 One last thing: Autumn in the Greater Khingan Mountains is the kind of beauty that is so fleeting it makes your heart ache 🍂 The golden viewing period is only about 20 days; if you miss it, you have to wait a year ⏳ I advise you not to go in October–November, because after you go, you'll be like me, scrolling through photos and asking yourself over and over: Can I take a long vacation next autumn and go again 😭 The lingering effect of that forest is just too strong 🍂

🍁 They say the most beautiful scenery is on the road, and it's true. We set off from Huzhong and drove toward Naweng River. This stretch is marked on the map as Oroqen, Hulunbuir, where the autumn vibes of the Greater Khingan Mountains hit you head-on. 🌲 Passing through Jagdaqi, looking out the car window, the riverbanks stretch out, sheep roam, and the blue sky is set against white clouds—it's truly refreshing. 🍂 Driving out of Jagdaqi, we left the Hulunbuir region and entered the Songnen Plain of Heilongjiang. We continued our journey toward Qiqihar and Harbin. 🌵 Across the rolling fields, rows of round, grassland "Swiss rolls" (hay bales) swept past the car. We could only take photos from the window while driving, but the stunning scenery was all captured in our eyes. 🍜 It wasn't until we stopped for lunch at the Suihua service area that we encountered this vast grassland up close. The piles of grassland "Swiss rolls" everywhere were exactly the autumn scene I love most. 🦢 Trying roasted goose egg for the first time was a novel and delightful surprise. On a road trip through Northern Xinjiang, the most beautiful scenery is always on the road 🌾

A hidden gem at 52°N latitude—visiting the Greater Khingan Mountains in October is the only way to do it right. The forests are painted in layers of autumn colors, with forests, rivers, lakes, and grasslands all woven together. Golden hues stretch as far as the eye can see, offering a chance to take in the ultimate northern autumn scenery all at once. Seriously, this autumn fairytale is legendary! 📅 [Early October | Colorful Gradient Forests] Early October is a magical time of color transition. The northern forests are the first to turn vibrant, with a rich mix of red, yellow, and green. The southern forests still retain plenty of deep green, accented by the first touches of autumn leaves. The forest farms around Jagdaqi are perfect for photos, with golden larches, deep green evergreens, and brownish-red shrubs creating an oil-painting effect. Driving along the forest roads, the colors change constantly outside your window, and you can pull over anytime to take pictures. 📅 [Mid-October | Peak Autumn, Scenery at Its Best] 🌟 Mid-October is the golden period for autumn foliage in the Greater Khingan Mountains, when the entire forest puts on its golden attire! The birch forests and larches turn completely yellow, and fallen leaves carpet the forest paths, crunching satisfyingly underfoot—it's so atmospheric. We recommend visiting the Jagdaqi Birch Forest and Wusuli Shoal, where golden leaves surround streams and lakes, reflecting the colorful forest in the water. It’s incredibly atmospheric. In the evening, the sunset filters through the trees, casting a golden glow on the river—a perfect spot to quietly enjoy the autumn dusk and get some amazing photos. 📅 [Late October | Late Autumn Vibes, Encountering the First Snow] ❄️ By late October, the late autumn vibes are in full swing, and if you're lucky, you might even encounter the first snow of the season! Golden autumn leaves dusted with a light layer of snow create a uniquely northern romantic landscape. The contrast between the cold snow and the warm golden leaves is visually stunning. The banks of the Huma River are perfect for camping and stargazing. The autumn night air is crystal clear, far from city light pollution, and the starry sky is clearly visible—it's breathtakingly romantic. The birch forests of Alongshan, covered in snow, offer a silver-and-gold landscape that is quiet, vast, and truly unique. 🚗 Transportation Guide Driving is the best way to see the autumn scenery in the Greater Khingan Mountains. Attractions are spread out, and driving gives you the most freedom to stop and enjoy the views along the way. For public transport, you can arrive in Jagdaqi first and then hire a local car or join a carpool, which makes it easy to travel between the various forest and riverside spots. ⚠️ Tips: Cell signal can be weak in some forest areas, so download offline maps in advance. There are many curves in the mountains, so slow down and drive carefully—safety first! 🧥 Packing & Clothing Temperatures in the Greater Khingan Mountains are low in October, with a huge temperature difference between day and night. Daytime is about 5–12°C, and it can drop below freezing at night. Be sure to pack a thick down jacket, fleece-lined leggings, non-slip hiking boots, and bring a hat, scarf, and gloves! For your outfit, prioritize red or caramel-colored jackets—they look great against the golden forest background. They’re warm and stylish, and you’ll definitely stand out in photos! 🍁 Travel Tips ✔️ Temperatures in the forest area are low, so stay warm and protected from the wind. It’s easy to catch a cold if you stay outdoors for too long. ✔️ Please protect the primeval forest. Do not trample on vegetation, and open flames are strictly prohibited—fire safety regulations in the forest area are very strict. ✔️ It can get foggy in the mornings by the lakes and in the forests. Drive slowly in foggy conditions and stay safe. ✔️ There aren't many convenience stores in the scenic areas, so carry enough drinking water, snacks, and hand warmers with you. Come to the Greater Khingan Mountains in October to experience this limited-time golden romance. See the colorful forests, watch the river flow quietly, and feel the unique beauty of the northern autumn wilderness. This isn't abroad—this is the peak of autumn in northern China! -4.3°C is the annual average temperature in Huzhong, while -53.2°C is the historical record low. The town has earned the title of "Cold Pole," and the numbers alone sound freezing. The day I arrived in late September was sunny, but as soon as the wind picked up, I couldn't take my gloves off, and my nose went numb in no time. The road to Huzhong Heading north from Jagdaqi along the G111 Jiamo Highway, pass Huyuan Town and turn onto the S218 provincial road to head deeper into the northwest. The sides of the road are initially grasslands and farmland, followed by endless Dahurian larch forests. By late September, the larch trees have started to turn yellow, slope after slope, while the birch trees recede into the background, leaving behind their clean, white trunks. I didn't dare keep the car window open for long; my hands would go stiff after just a moment. Autumn arrives early in this region. By mid-to-late September, the higher peaks may see their first snowfall, while the lower areas are still a tapestry of colorful autumn foliage. Locals mark the seasons by the weather, and once the "Five-Flower Mountain Festival" arrives, the number of people carrying cameras increases. Huzhong District is located on the northern foothills of the Yilehuli Mountains, with an average elevation of over 800 meters. There are more than 800 peaks over 1,000 meters within its borders, and the forest coverage rate is 96%. In the past, this was a logging hub, but after logging was halted, it gradually shifted toward eco-tourism. You can still see some old-fashioned logging trucks and tractors by the roadside, which serve as a footnote to the transformation of the forest region. Dabaishan and its surrounding forests Dabaishan, with an elevation of 1,528 meters, is a peak in the northern section of the Greater Khingan Mountains and is known as the "Peak of Khingan." A short drive south from Huzhong Town brings you to the Baishan Scenic Area. Several retired logging trucks are displayed near the entrance, resembling an open-air forestry exhibition. Climbing to the heights, you are greeted by a vast, rolling sea of forest beneath your feet, where the golden yellow of the larch is interspersed with the deep green of creeping pines, creating a tranquil scene. This area is home to cold-temperate virgin forests, dominated by larch with birch as an accent. In late September, the mountain forests are interwoven with five colors, offering a rich, layered view of the autumn foliage. The Huzhong Nature Reserve is located within these mountains. Established in 1963, it protects the virgin larch forests and the wildlife within them, and it is also the source of the Huma River. There is a small museum in the reserve that displays moose specimens and early logging tools, clearly illustrating the transition from logging to forest conservation. Locals say that in the past, the chants of the loggers could drown out the wind, but now that the mountains have quieted down, the birds and animals are gradually returning. Around the town, there are also the Cangshan Stone Forest, the rock paintings at Longshoudong, and a park where reindeer are raised. You can't see it all in one day, so you'll need to pick and choose. The Cangshan Stone Forest is a provincial geopark where stones stand along the ridge, distributed more sparsely than in typical stone forest scenic areas. The Longshoudong area features 10,000-year-old painted rock art, but it is in a remote location, so be sure to ask for directions before you go. If you prefer peace and quiet, a walk along the Huma River is also a good option; the water is freezing to the touch, and you can occasionally see unfrozen sections at the river bends. Lodging and dinner Huzhong Town is small, surrounded by mountains on all sides, with a section of the Huma River valley in the middle. The food is mostly Northeast home-style: stews, mushrooms, wood ear, and cold-water fish. A bowl of hot soup is very comforting when the weather is cold. Most places to stay are town guesthouses and family inns; while the conditions aren't luxurious, they have the advantage of good heating. If you want more comfortable accommodations, there are more options in Jagdaqi. If you are entering Huzhong in late September, don't skimp on a down jacket, hat, and gloves. The temperature difference between day and night is significant, and the wind is harsher than in the city, though it doesn't feel too cold when the sun is out during the day; the temperature can fluctuate by more than 10 degrees in a single day. The forest roads are winding, so don't rush if you are driving yourself. Some sections are gravel roads, which can be slippery when it rains. You usually need to obtain permits for the core area of the nature reserve, so check the daily opening arrangements before heading into the mountains. This area is a key zone for fire prevention, so do not use open flames in the forest. Take a train to Jagdaqi Station and then transfer to a bus to Huzhong, which takes over three hours; the journey from Jagdaqi Airport is about the same. The attractions in Huzhong are scattered, and there are no public buses connecting the Baishan Scenic Area, the Cangshan Stone Forest, and Longshoudong. Plan your vehicle and route before you set off, otherwise you will spend most of your day on the road. Take care of this step first, and leave the rest to the weather.

Huma County Museum: A curved memorial hall of border town memories by the Heilongjiang River Walk along Zhengqi Road in Huma County, and you'll find the gently flowing Heilongjiang River on one side. When you pull up to No. 138, a building with fluid lines unfolds along the street—its outer contours rise from a low point and gently descend, resembling the arc left by the river as it bends. You have arrived at the Huma County Museum. Its design is inspired by the trajectory of the Heilongjiang River as it flows through Huma; the entire building has no right angles, resting there like flowing water. First, you see the curves and the pine forest The museum covers an area of over 2,400 square meters, with a building area of 4,400 square meters. The architecture preserves the original Mongolian pine forest and green space, with several old pines reaching out from beside the building, their canopies shading part of the exterior wall. An Anti-Japanese United Army Monument stands in the courtyard, integrated into the overall design; as you walk in, the monument and the building are right next to each other. Six exhibition halls, one timeline The museum is divided into six halls: Historical Exhibition, Development History, Specialized Culture, Natural Geography, Urban Planning, and Temporary Exhibition. Entering from the entrance, soft light spreads across the exhibition route. You change units every few steps—it's neither crowded nor empty. The Historical Exhibition Hall is the first stop. The first things in the display cases that make you pause are a few Paleolithic artifacts unearthed from the Laoka Site—stone cores and flakes. They are grayish-white, with hammer marks left on the edges, and are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Next to them is a six-eared marching pot from the Jin Dynasty. The copper body has oxidized to a dark brown, and six ears are arranged in a circle along the rim, with the vessel shape intact. The display case lights shine on these artifacts, and the text on the labels is small, requiring you to get close to read it clearly. A golden display of gold mining culture In the Specialized Culture Hall, gold mining culture takes up a large portion. Huma has long been known for its "gold-paved roads." The museum's gold mining exhibits are laid out one by one, from wooden pans and shovels used during the manual gold panning era to wooden machinery introduced in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China era, and finally to photos of modern gold mining ships. The most special feature is a miniature scene—walking along the "Golden Road," built to scale with cast copper and auriferous rock, the wooden architectural model of "Jinshan Town" appears before your eyes. The wooden boards on the roofs and the pebbles on the streets have all been recreated according to how they looked in the past. Accompanied by light and shadow imaging, the street scene of Jinshan Town slowly lights up on the wall, with images of people coming and going flowing above the miniature model. Exhibition areas for the Anti-Japanese United Army and educated youth In the Red Culture Exhibition Area, the wula shoes and canteens of the Anti-Japanese United Army soldiers are displayed in cases; the leather surfaces are cracked, and the iron canteens are covered with a thin layer of rust. Next to it is a scene exhibition area called "Road of Crossing the River," which uses sound, light, and electricity technology to recreate the scene of crossing the river in wind and snow—the lights dim, the sound of wind comes from all around, the river surface in the image freezes, and figures move in the snow. The Educated Youth Exhibition Area is on the other side. The display cases contain production tools and daily necessities used by the educated youth, and old black-and-white photos hang on the walls. The images are yellowed, but you can still recognize tractors in the snow and crowds on the ridges. A group of sculptures stands in the middle of the hall, with several people bent over, holding tools, their postures frozen in a moment of labor. A corner for Oroqen culture In the Ethnic Culture Exhibition Area, the animal hide culture and birch bark culture of the Oroqen people occupy a significant space. Clothing sewn from roe deer skin hangs on the display racks; the leather is tanned to be soft, with varying shades of fur. Lunch boxes, needle cases, and jewelry boxes made of birch bark are lined up in the display cases, with the seams tightly stitched with birch bark thread. Next to it is a scene restoration that recreates the traditional hunting life of the Oroqen people—a conical xierenzhu tent stands in the forest, dried fish hang on a rack, and ashes remain in the campfire. Some practical information The museum is located at No. 138 Zhengqi Road, Huma County, and is within walking distance from the town center. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM; hours may sometimes be adjusted on weekends and holidays. The paths in the exhibition halls are mostly flat, making it easy to walk around, and it takes about an hour to see everything at a leisurely pace. The indoor lighting is somewhat dim, so you need to get close to see the items in the display cases clearly. When you come out of the museum, it is still bright outside. Looking back at the curved building, it stands quietly in the afternoon light, with the shadows of the pine forest falling on the exterior wall. Those stone artifacts, the marching pot, and the miniature Jinshan Town are still in their original positions, waiting for the next person to push open the door.

I have seen autumn in countless places, but in the end, I was completely captivated by the Greater Khingan Mountains. They say if you want to see a sea of forests in autumn, you must visit the Greater Khingan Mountains at 52 degrees north latitude. Autumn here isn't just a single shade of gold; it's a layered, gradual romance. From the gentle gradients of early autumn in September to the pure white secret realm of deep winter in December, these three months of limited-time beauty offer natural scenery in every frame that needs no filter, hiding away the most ultimate therapeutic feeling of autumn and winter in the north. I have put together a super detailed itinerary for visiting the Greater Khingan Mountains from September to December. If you are planning a trip this autumn or winter, just follow this guide! 🍂Late September | Early autumn begins, a golden gradient In late September, the Greater Khingan Mountains still retain the lingering warmth of summer, but they are quietly starting to change their look. The entire forest sheds its midsummer emerald green, slowly blending into a gentle, gilded gold. Stroll along the banks of the Ergun River, where the trees are the first to turn yellow. As the breeze blows, tiny golden leaves rustle and fall, landing on the river and drifting with the current, creating an incredibly atmospheric scene. A road trip along the border to Alongshan is the most therapeutic journey during this time. The continuous forest sea along the way changes color in succession, and everything you see is a gentle autumn scene. It is uncrowded and quiet, and every photo you take looks like a therapeutic autumn blockbuster. Avoid the crowded tourist hotspots and enjoy this quiet autumn light all to yourself. 🍁Early to mid-October | Layers of color, an oil painting of deep autumn In October, the Greater Khingan Mountains reach their peak beauty, making it the most worthwhile time of the year to visit! The autumn scenery here is very layered, with the northern and southern landscapes each having their own charm. The northern forests are already colorful, with gold, crimson, and dark green interwoven in a well-ordered way. The south still retains a hint of green, with the collision of cool and warm tones creating a unique visual beauty. Be sure to visit the forest farms around Jagdaqi. Nature is like a master painter, splashing brown, orange, and bright red across the mountains and fields. Walking on the forest paths, you are surrounded by a rich autumn atmosphere, as if you have stumbled into a therapeutic autumn oil painting. The real scenery is even more stunning than the pictures. 🍂Late October to November | A sea of gold, a fairytale secret realm In late autumn, the Greater Khingan Mountains turn into a golden fairytale world. The trees across the mountains and plains have all changed color, and the entire landscape is wrapped in rich autumn hues, with colors that are intense yet therapeutic. The Jagdaqi Birch Forest and Wusuli Shoal are must-visit spots. Thick fallen leaves cover the forest paths, riverbanks, and lake surroundings. Stepping on the soft leaves, you can feel the gentle texture of autumn. During the day, immerse yourself in the golden forest sea and watch the mountains, rivers, and autumn forests complement each other. At night, you can camp by the Huma River, far away from the hustle and bustle of city lights. Look up to see a sky full of brilliant stars. The evening breeze is gentle, and the mountains are quiet. This is a romantic experience unique to late autumn in the Greater Khingan Mountains. ❄️Late November to December | Silver-clad, an ice and snow wonderland After bidding farewell to the brilliant late autumn, the Greater Khingan Mountains welcome a pure winter secret realm. After the biting cold wind, the entire forest is covered in white snow, with thousands of trees draped in white, offering a panoramic view of the magnificent forest and snow plains. The birch forests of Alongshan are clad in silver, with white snowy branches swaying, cold yet therapeutic. The ice waterfalls and rime ice in Arxan National Forest Park appear one after another, creating crystal-clear ice and snow landscapes that are stunning and beautiful. Winter in the Greater Khingan Mountains is not just cold; it also has warm, cozy moments. As night falls, enjoy a barbecue outdoors under the starlight. The evening breeze carries the crispness of ice and snow. With delicious food and a sky full of stars, this unique winter experience is unforgettable once you have been here. I truly believe that half of the romance of autumn and winter in the north belongs to Snow Town, and the other half belongs to the Greater Khingan Mountains. From the colorful autumn scenery to the pure white ice and snow, these three months of ultimate beauty will surely have a moment that touches you, if you love the mountains and wilderness.

It has various "northernmost in China" check-in spots, like the northernmost post office, the northernmost border outpost, and Arctic Square. Every place is full of ritual. In September, Arctic Village isn't crowded with summer tourists. In the early morning, mist rises, and the river, wooden houses, and forest form a northern fairy tale picture 📸 ② Birch Forest: The highlight of the Greater Khingan Mountains in autumn In September, the most beautiful part of the Greater Khingan Mountains is the birch forest. Looking down from the observation deck is very impressive. It's recommended to go when the weather is good. The blue sky, forest, and river combined create a strong visual impact. ④ Huma River Scenic Area: Niche, healing scenery Compared to popular attractions, there are fewer tourists here. Walking along the river, feeling the autumn breeze, and watching the sunset fall on the river is perfect for people who like quiet travel. Family-friendly itinerary 🚗 Day 1: Arrive in Mohe, start the forest journey Morning: Arrive in Mohe It's recommended to rent a car or hire a driver in advance; attractions in the Greater Khingan Mountains are far apart, so self-driving is the best experience. Often, a forest or a small river you stop at is more surprising than a paid attraction. ② Chase the forest morning mist Get up early and go to the river or the woods; you can often encounter thin mist. When the sunlight shines through the forest, the atmosphere is fully maximized 🌲 ③ Experience Northeast forest life Stay in a wooden cabin once, eat a local home-cooked meal, and sit around chatting at night—this is the true way to experience the Greater Khingan Mountains. Deep experience 🌿 The Greater Khingan Mountains are suitable for slow travel. There is no hustle and bustle of big cities, no dense commercial streets, just more forest, rivers, and a sense of distance between people and nature. Bringing children here allows them to learn about different plants, feel the forest ecology, and lets the whole family put down their phones for a while and spend quality time together. Photo spot recommendations 📸 ① Arctic Village riverbank Sunrise and sunset are both very beautiful. ② Northernmost Post Office entrance Full of travel commemorative vibes. ③ Deep in the birch forest The golden autumn forest is super photogenic. ④ First Bay of the Heilongjiang River observation deck Suitable for wide-angle photos. ⑤ Forest road parking spots Every shot is a road trip blockbuster. ⑥ In front of wooden cabin homestays Full of Northeast fairy tale atmosphere. Blueberry drinks and blueberry jam are suitable to buy and take home. ⑤ Frozen pears A Northeast specialty fruit, with a cold, sweet, and sour taste. ⑥ Guo Bao Rou (sweet and sour pork) Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, sweet and sour, loved by both adults and children. Protecting the ecology is also part of the trip 🌱 Travel checklist 💰 Tickets: Some attractions require tickets; the overall price is quite friendly. Transportation: External: You can reach cities like Mohe by plane or high-speed rail. Internal: Attractions are scattered; self-driving or hiring a car is recommended. Accommodation: 3 days and 2 nights cost about 800–1,500 CNY per person for a comfortable stay. Overall feeling: The greatest charm of the Greater Khingan Mountains is that it is "far." The journey may be a bit long, and the weather changes are quite obvious, but the moment you see the forest, the river, and the autumn colors, you will feel that the journey was worth it ❤️ The biggest "suffering" 😂: It's not that the scenery is bad, but that the attractions are far apart, so you need to plan your route in advance. About accommodation 🏠 Budget: Choose homestays in the county or near attractions; clean and convenient is enough. Comfortable value: It is recommended to choose homestays with private bathrooms and convenient parking, which are more suitable for family travelers. High quality: You can experience forest wooden cabins and unique accommodations to feel an immersive trip. Survival guide 📌 Accommodation: September is a popular autumn season, so it is recommended to book in advance. Dining: Northeast dishes are served in large portions; order in moderation. Transportation: Self-driving is best; the scenery along the way is the essence. Souvenirs: Blueberry products and local specialty foods are recommended. Other: There is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in September; be sure to bring a thick jacket. Best time 🍁 Best time to travel to the Greater Khingan Mountains: June–September is suitable for escaping the heat and forest tours. Late September–early October is the peak of autumn colors. If you want to see the golden forest and avoid the crowds, September is just right ✨ The Greater Khingan Mountains is not a place suitable for rushing through an itinerary. It is more like a forest healing trip 🌲 Sitting by the river, feeling the breeze, watching the sunset, listening to the sounds of the forest... If you want to find a place away from the city that is suitable for the whole family to experience slowly, the Greater Khingan Mountains is really worth a trip ❤️

Arctic Village has better facilities, while Beihong Village is more primitive. It's amazing for watching the aurora in winter and the white nights in summer 🌌. · Luoguhe Village/Tuqiang Town: Experience the fairy-tale wooden cabins and forest area charm—book in advance! · Jagdaqi/Tahe/Huma: Staying in the city center is most convenient, with plenty of food and drink options and affordable prices. · Overall advice: Stay in Jagdaqi/Mohe for the first few nights, and stay in homestays around the scenic areas for a deeper experience. Staying warm is very important! 🍜 Food Recommendations (Hardcore Northeast + Forest Specialties) · Iron Pot Stew: Goose/ribs/fish, with a ring of corn cakes stuck to the side—it's incredibly delicious 🍲! · Forest Game: Mushroom stew with chicken, blueberry products (blueberry wine/dried fruit), wild fish. · Northeast Home-style Dishes: Guo Bao Rou (sweet and sour pork), Di San Xian (stir-fried potato, green pepper, and eggplant), and "pig slaughter" stew—the portions are huge. · Russian Flavors: Huma/Mohe have Russian-style streets; try the Lieba (Russian bread), red sausage, and Kvass. · Tips: Prices are relatively low, but choices are limited in remote areas, so don't be too picky~ 📸 Photography Guide (100% Success Rate) · Arctic Village: Mail a postcard from the northernmost post office, and check in at the "I found the North" landmark in the northernmost square 📮. · First Bay of the Heilongjiang River/Wusuli Shoal: Take photos from high up overlooking the river bend in autumn—it's breathtaking! · Luoguhe Village/Tuqiang Town: Wooden cabins + forest + mini-train—perfect for Japanese/fairy-tale styles 🚂. · Huzhong Korean Pine Forest: Golden yellow in autumn; wear white/red clothes for a nice contrast. · Oroqen Township: Cuoluozi (animal skin tents) + reindeer—the ethnic style is super unique 🦌. · Aurora/Starry Sky: Watch for the aurora in Arctic Village during winter, or photograph the white nights in summer—long exposure shots are stunning! 💡 Practical Tips · Best time to visit: September–October for the peak of autumn colors (golden forest sea) 🍁; December–February for high chances of snow scenery + aurora ❄️; June–August for a cool, natural oxygen bar escape. · Transportation: Attractions are very spread out! I strongly recommend chartering a car/self-driving/carpooling and following the map route to avoid detours. Plan ahead; don't look for a car at the last minute. · Clothing: Huge temperature difference! Even in summer, bring a jacket. In autumn/winter, you must have a down jacket + thermal pants + hat and gloves. Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes—you'll be walking a lot! · Gear: Mosquito repellent (mosquitoes are fierce in the forest in summer), sunscreen, power bank (the area is vast and sparsely populated, so signals can be weak). · Others: Bring some cash, as some places have no signal; respect local ethnic customs. ⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid (Hard-Learned Lessons) 1. You can't see the aurora just because you want to: The aurora mostly appears in the deep winter nights and is affected by solar activity. Don't easily believe sales pitches promising "100% aurora sightings." 2. Don't trust low-priced tour groups: There are many traps. It's better to travel independently and charter a car for more freedom and a deeper experience. 3. Book rooms in advance: Especially in Arctic Village/during autumn and winter, rooms are in high demand and prices go up. You might end up with nowhere to stay if you wait until the last minute. 4. Don't pick wild fruits/enter deep forests randomly: It's easy to get lost or have an allergic reaction. Stick close to your guide. 5. Ask for prices before eating: Especially in scenic areas. Although generally cheap, it's better to be safe. 6. Long distances: If driving, be careful of fatigue. Don't pack your daily schedule too full; enjoy the slow pace. The Greater Khingan Mountains really are a place where you can "walk into the Greater Khingan Mountains and meet the purest China"! No commercial hustle and bustle, just the tranquility of the forest and snow. If you have any questions, ask me in the comments section—I'll reply to everyone! Hurry up and your travel buddy to start planning~ 👭💕

From the open grasslands of Ulan Butong to the wetlands of Nanweng River, from the forests of Arxan to the remote landscapes around Qiqian, eastern Inner Mongolia reveals an extraordinary variety of autumn scenery. The colours change as the landscape changes. Golden grasslands give way to vast sandy plains. Red five-pointed maple forests blaze beneath the autumn sun. Birch forests surround the mountain roads of Arxan and Chaihe, while wetlands near Heishantou and Ergun reflect the colours of the surrounding forests. Further north, the China–Russia border highway becomes an adventure in itself. The road passes through immense forests and open wilderness before reaching the remote landscapes of Bailu Island and Qiqian. And then there is Nanweng River Wetland, where autumn spreads across one of the great northern wetland landscapes. For travellers planning an autumn road trip through eastern Inner Mongolia, these are some of the most rewarding places to consider, listed roughly from south to north: 🍂 Ulan Butong Grassland — grasslands, birch forests and classic autumn scenery 🌾 Horqin Sandy Land — golden desert landscapes and distinctive vegetation 🍁 Wujiafeng Ecological Tourism Area — spectacular five-pointed maple forests 🌲 Arxan–Chaihe — volcanic landscapes, forests, lakes and autumn colours 🌅 Heishantou–Ergun Wetlands — rivers, wetlands and expansive grasslands 🛣️ China–Russia Border Highway / National Highway 331 — one of the most scenic road-trip routes in the region 🌲 Bailu Island & Qiqian — deep forests and remote northern landscapes 🦌 Nanweng River Wetland — vast wetlands surrounded by autumn wilderness What makes eastern Inner Mongolia so special is not simply the colour of the trees. It is the scale. You can drive for hours beneath enormous skies, watching the landscape transform from grassland to forest, wetland to wilderness, with autumn colours appearing in completely different forms along the way. 📍 Eastern Inner Mongolia, China 🇨🇳 🚗 Road Trip Tip: These destinations are spread across a huge area, so a multi-day road trip is the most practical way to experience them. Distances between stops can be considerable, and some northern sections have limited services. Fuel, accommodation, weather and road conditions should be planned carefully before departure. 📸 Photography Tip: Don't chase only the famous red and golden forests. Look for transitions — a winding road entering a birch forest, wetlands reflecting autumn trees, grasslands beneath low sunlight, or a solitary tree against the immense sky. ✨ Signature Feeling: Golden grasslands, crimson maples, endless forests, wetlands and border roads — autumn unfolding across an entire region. In eastern Inner Mongolia, autumn is not a destination. It is a road that keeps changing colour as you travel north. 🍁

At 52 degrees north latitude, autumn in the Greater Khingan Mountains is more romantic than anywhere else. In the northern border region, among the forests along the banks of the Ergun River, golden leaves begin to fall. Driving along the border toward Alongshan, the forests along the way gradually turn golden, creating a spectacular sight. 💫 [Early to mid-October] Transitions and the onset of late autumn Autumn in the Greater Khingan Mountains varies between the north and south. The north is covered in layers of color, a mix of red, yellow, and green, while the south largely retains its green base. In a forest farm near Jagdaqi, rich colors like gold, dark green, and brownish-tan intertwine, creating breathtaking oil paintings. 💫 [Late October to November] The peak of late autumn and golden hues During this period, the Greater Khingan Mountains look as if they've been brushed by a palette—gold, fiery red, dark green... various colors intertwine, creating a mesmerizing beauty. In places like the birch forests near Jagdaqi and the Wusuli Shoal, golden fallen leaves carpet the forest paths, the banks of streams, and the areas around lakes, making you feel as if you've stepped into a fairy tale. In the birch forests of Alongshan, after a heavy snowfall, the sight of thousands of trees covered in snow is stunning. In the Arxan National Forest Park, the crystal-clear ice waterfalls and rime ice are truly breathtaking. At this time, the Greater Khingan Mountains seem to be draped in a pure white coat. At 4 AM in Jiagedaqi the sky is already fully lit It's not just a dim dawn—it's proper full daylight The first time it happened I checked the time three times over I really hadn't overslept. The sun simply rises too early here High-latitude summers are unapologetically bold Night doesn't fall properly until after 8 PM The days feel stretched and packed For workers who never have enough vacation time, it's like a cheat code 📍 A quick correction So many people treat this place only as a transfer stop to Mohe That's a real miss Jiagedaqi means "place with Mongolian pine" in the Oroqen language It's the administrative center of the Daxing'anling region, known as the region's main city Give it two full days and it won't disappoint 🗿 Cultural highlight: Gaxian Cave About 50 km from town, just over an hour by car Located north of Alihe town in the Oroqen autonomous banner of Inner Mongolia Roads are good—just navigate there directly Tickets are around ¥75 and include the cave and the full trail Why you must go This is the confirmed ancestral site of the Tuoba Xianbei On the cave's west wall there is a cliff inscription from 443 AD, during the Northern Wei—201 characters in total The "old site of the state's former emperor" recorded in history books is this very cave Standing at the mouth of the cave you look out at pines and birches that shade the sun and ridgelines that stack one after another That feeling of stepping into 1,500 years of history is absolutely incredible Wear non-slip shoes. The stone steps inside are damp Open until 5:30 PM. Last entry at 3:30 PM Allow at least half a day and don't rush 🏛️ Half a day in town In the morning visit Zhiqing Park Back then, hundreds of thousands of sent-down youth poured their youth into this forest The park is small, but the atmosphere is heavy with history Locals go for early-morning runs there, giving it a very lived-in vibe In the afternoon go to the Daxing'anling museum Bring your ID From natural specimens to the history of forest development, everything is clearly explained Read the land first, then go into the mountains—the experience is completely different 🌲 Spend the evening by the water The Ganhe wetland scenic belt is 7 km from town A new waterfront boardwalk was completed this year The water is mirror-smooth, and when the wind blows a 20°C chill wraps around you Don't rush to leave—sit until the sun goes down 🚙 Drive north: choose one of three routes G111 classic route Jiagedaqi → Songling → Xinlin → Tahe → Mohe → Beiji Village Good roads and full services. If it's your first time, pick this for a trouble-free trip G311 Jiejiang route Jiagedaqi → Huma → Longhe station → First bend of the Heilongjiang → Beiji Village Most spectacular scenery, but much longer—make sure you have enough time S218 forest-sea route Jiagedaqi → Huzhong → Tuqiang → Mohe Passes through the Huzhong protected area. The forest is densest here and the green is the deepest ⛺ That night's tent A tent was pitched on a wooden platform by the wetland, with a thick moisture-proof layer underneath, and crawling into the sleeping bag felt surprisingly warm Open the tent flap and there's a whole sea of reeds and a water surface catching the sky At night it was so quiet all that could be heard was the wind brushing the grass I stepped out once in the middle of the night and the stars were so dense they felt like they would spill out, the Milky Way hanging over the treetops—a scene money can't buy in the city At 4 AM the morning light woke me and mist still floated on the water. At that moment I felt this trip was totally worth it 🔥 Final essential reminders ✅ Fill the tank before you leave—there may be no gas stations between towns ✅ In August mornings and evenings can drop below 13°C—don't dismiss a windproof jacket ✅ Cell signal is weak deep in the forest. Download offline maps the night before ✅ During fire season strictly follow local rules—no open flames allowed ✅ There are many winding roads—don't speed. Driving slowly is the right way to enjoy the scenery If you're tired of the run-of-the-mill tourist towns, stay here for a few days Let a 20°C breeze pass through a vast sea of forest and wash over you Then you'll know what it means to truly breathe deeply, body and mind

Have you ever had one of those moments where you're so hot you can't sleep, you've got a migraine from relying on air conditioning to survive, and opening the window just lets in waves of heat rising from the asphalt? I have. By the end of July, I completely hit my breaking point. I took 5 days off and drove north alone. Destination: Jiagedaqi. A place where 90% of people can't pronounce the name correctly. In the Oroqen language, it means "a place with Mongolian pines". 🚗 My route Departing from Harbin, I took the Suiman Expressway to Qiqihar, then switched to the G111 and headed north. The whole trip is about 700 kilometers, with a stop in Nehe along the way. After passing Nenjiang, the scenery changed dramatically—the asphalt road was flanked by endless birch forests and Mongolian pines. Cell service was spotty, and the temperature outside the window dropped from 34°C all the way to 23°C. By the time I reached Jiagedaqi, it was just getting dark. I rolled down the window and took a deep breath; the air was filled with the scent of grass, trees, and earth, and my eyes welled up right then and there. 🌿 Nanweng River Wetland | I was blown away The next morning, I headed straight for the Nanweng River. This place is on the list of Wetlands of International Importance and is China's only cold-temperate island-forest wetland reserve. It's about an hour's drive south from Jiagedaqi. The main highlight is the 43.69-meter-high fire lookout tower in the Nenjiang Source Scenic Area. The first floor has an accessible elevator, the second floor is a revolving restaurant (you can sit there, but don't expect anything too fancy), and the third floor is an open-air observation deck. I recommend you go straight to the third floor. On a clear day, visibility is 30 kilometers. Below you, wetland channels wind toward the horizon, with tussocks scattered like green buns across the water. In the distance, where the forest meets the sky, there's a thin layer of mist. I stood there for 40 minutes without moving; all thoughts of KPIs and weekly reports vanished, leaving only the sound of the wind. The Wetland Science Museum is also worth a visit. It features 4D imagery that recreates the 5,000-year ecological evolution of this wetland, which is quite moving to watch. 🌲 Tiantai Mountain hike | Don't underestimate this trail In the afternoon, I headed back toward Baiquan Valley to hike Tiantai Mountain. I know the word "hike" might scare some people off, but this trail is extremely beginner-friendly—stone steps, gentle slopes, and shade the whole way. I finished it in a pair of regular sneakers, and it took 40 minutes one way. The Paleolithic rock paintings at the summit are a must-see. Then there's the wetland meadow boardwalk on the way down. Walking this path in August feels like stepping into a scene from a Hayao Miyazaki film—grass growing up to your waist, mist flowing along the ground, and birds occasionally sweeping overhead. 🌅 Ganhe Wetland self-driving campsite | The evening is the main event I didn't pack my schedule on the third day, so I didn't slowly make my way to Ganhe Wetland Park until 3:00 PM. The self-driving campsite opened in 2025, and the facilities are even better this year—RV sites, eco-cabins, kayaks, and a sightseeing train are all available. But I wasn't there for the activities. I found a spot near the water, parked the car, pulled out a folding chair, and just sat there. I watched migratory birds fly just above the reed tips, watched the sun slowly sink into the edge of the wetlands, and watched the sky shift from orange-red to indigo to pitch black. Then I looked up. The Milky Way. A dense, visible-to-the-naked-eye Milky Way. I hadn't seen the Milky Way in 6 years. At that moment, I sat in my chair and cried—I cried like a baby. There's no light pollution in the Greater Khingan Mountains on a summer night; you look up and see the entire galaxy. That sense of insignificance, being enveloped by the universe, makes you want to live more than any city night view ever could. 🏡 That night, I slept in an elevated treehouse by the wetlands. It was an all-wood structure built between several larch trees, with the wetland meadow right underneath. There was no air conditioning in the room (it wasn't needed at all), and opening the window revealed the forest and the sky. In the middle of the night, I was woken up by the sound of the wind in the pines. Drowsily, I saw starlight filtering through the gap in the curtains, rolled over, and fell back asleep. It was the deepest sleep I've had in years. 📌 A few solid tips for those planning to go: → August is the best window; it starts getting cold in September, and the flower fields will have faded → There is a separate fee to climb the Nanweng River lookout tower, so don't be surprised when you get there → Gas stations in the forest area are far apart, so fill up your tank before you leave and top off whenever you see one → Baiquan Valley admission is 45 yuan/person, and the sightseeing bus is 20 yuan/person. The scenic area is open until mid-October → Jiagedaqi Station has direct trains to Beijing, Harbin, Qiqihar, and Mohe, so you can definitely enjoy the trip even if you don't drive → Bring a windbreaker or a thick hoodie; the temperature can drop to around 10–19°C at night → Bring mosquito repellent, long sleeves, and long pants. Don't wear sandals near the wetlands—the midges will literally make you cry One last heartfelt word: Jiagedaqi isn't just a "tourist attraction"—it's a state of mind. It's for when you're about to explode in a 37°C city, and someone suddenly tells you to head north to a place that's only 22°C, with pine forests, mist, and the Milky Way, where no one is rushing you to reply to messages. You just need to go.

#adventuretrips When we talk about #adventuretrips, most people picture steep rocky peaks or grueling mountain climbs. But my recent solo hike on Luding Mountain totally redefined my idea of outdoor adventure—it’s a hidden borderland gem blending wild nature and legendary wuxia charm, and every step felt like a real exploration journey. Tucked in the dense Greater Khingan Mountains and overlooking the winding Huma River, Luding Mountain is famous as the real setting of The Deer and the Cauldron. I came here just for the legendary martial arts vibe, yet I ended up falling for its raw, untamed hiking fun. Unlike crowded commercial mountains, this trail feels authentic and immersive, perfect for casual adventure seekers. My whole adventure centered on the iconic Dragon Vein Boardwalk. The path winds through thick primeval forests with towering pine trees and strange shaped rocks all around. Most trails are quiet woodland paths, but there are narrow cliffside sections that bring subtle thrills. Walking along the edge, with the vast river valley stretching below, I truly felt like wandering in a hidden martial arts world. I had such a fun unexpected moment during the hike. Halfway up, I took a lesser-known side trail to avoid the few tourist crowds. The path was covered with fallen pine needles, with only bird songs and flowing spring sounds around me. When I reached the Wanglong Platform at the summit, the view blew my mind! The emerald Huma River loops around endless green plains, and sea of clouds drifts over the mountain ridges. It was peaceful yet wildly breathtaking. This hike is the best kind of adventure. It has no extreme danger, but offers endless discoveries: fresh mountain springs, unique rock formations, and the magical ancient legend atmosphere. It’s not just sightseeing—it’s exploring an unknown borderland landscape and connecting with nature deeply. Here’s my question for fellow adventurers! Do you prefer high-thrill extreme hikes or this calm, discovery-style scenic adventure? Have you ever hiked a mountain with classic novel legends? Drop your thoughts and cool trail recommendations below!

Listen up, sisters!!! While the whole country is sweating through 40℃ heatwaves, I flew straight to a place where you need fleece in summer. Frost forms on the car window at midnight❄️ but by afternoon, it’s warm enough for short sleeves. The day-to-night temperature difference can reach 26℃ This isn’t a glitch; it’s the Daxing’anling heartland’s way of showing off. Tested myself for 5 days and 4 nights, my skin feels better than after a week of medical beauty treatments. My pores got a deep spa in 3,800+ negative oxygen ions. I feel like the forest sea reformatted me completely. 🚗 How to get there? Here’s the travel info you need. Fly to Jiagedaqi Gaxian Airport. In 2026, new direct flights from Chengdu and Xi’an were added. No more transfers in Harbin, which saves a lot of hassle. After landing, rent a car and drive yourself. Head north along Provincial Road S218 for 280 km. The entire route is paved, with unbelievably good road conditions. Both sides are endless birch and larch forests. Driving feels like passing through a green tunnel. You’ll pass Songling, where you can fill up your tank. ⚠️ Note: There’s no 98-octane gas in Huzhong town. If you’re driving a performance car, fill up in advance. Not driving? Don’t worry. Jiagedaqi bus station has 2 long-distance buses daily, one at 8:30 AM and another at 2:00 PM. Tickets cost 75 yuan. The trip takes about 4 hours. Once in town, you can rent a car for sightseeing, about 400–500 yuan per day. 🏔️ Day 1 Dabai Mountain — the highest peak of Yilehuli Mountain This must be your first stop! At 1,528 meters, the hike to the summit takes about 1 hour. The trail is well maintained, a mix of steps and dirt paths. It’s not a brutal mountain that leaves your legs weak, but you’ll sweat just enough—not too cold or hot to be unbearable. The summit view is legendary. As far as the eye can see are rolling green ridges. Visibility reaches the limit of your eyesight. The distant mountains layer in seven or eight shades of green. Every snapshot looks like a classic Windows wallpaper. Tickets are 35 yuan per person, no peak or off-season pricing. Open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It’s best to start at 8:00 AM for the perfect light at the top. It’s windy! Be sure to bring a windbreaker. I went in mid-July; the summit felt like about 8℃. 🪨 Day 2 Cangshan Stone Forest — a 130 million-year geological wonder 30 km from town, about a 40-minute drive. The northernmost, largest, and highest natural stone forest in China. Honestly, I didn’t expect much before coming, but I was speechlessly amazed. Huge granite formations rise from dense forest. “Pillar of the North,” “Skyline,” “Eagle Beak Rock,” “Golden Toad Watching the Moon”— each stone has a name and a story. The most amazing are “Skyline” and “Lucky Gate.” The two stone peaks are less than 1 meter apart. Both slim and wide people can squeeze through. It’s said passing through brings good luck🍀. The whole park has only one wooden boardwalk, with almost no human traces and all original vegetation. Tickets are also 35 yuan, open hours the same as above. ⚠️ Mosquitoes are really bad in the forest. Use insect repellent with SPF 50 all over your body. 🫐 Day 3 blueberry season meets reindeer — double the healing Mid to late July is the perfect time for blueberries. Huzhong is truly the “blueberry hometown.” You can pick them right from the roadside bushes. The sweet and sour taste will make you squint with joy—nothing like store-bought. In the afternoon, visit the reindeer park. Moss costs 10 yuan per basket. The reindeer will come over to nibble from your palm. Their eyelashes are covered with lichen fluff. Their gentle eyes almost made me cry. The boardwalk is very flat, perfect for strollers. Moms, feel free to bring your kids. 🏡 About resting The town has several newly renovated forest cabin-style guesthouses. Open the window and you see larch and birch trees. At night, you’ll need a quilt—no air conditioning needed, because nighttime temperatures hover just above 10℃. Some even have viewing terraces. In the evening, sip a glass of blueberry wine while watching the sunset paint the forest red. This kind of happiness is hard to put into words. For a wilder experience, choose a cabin camp near the reserve. At night, look up and see the Milky Way. No light pollution, just stars visible to the naked eye. Waking up to the sound of pine waves at dawn—who can understand that? 👕 Dressing tips to stay safe (important!!!) Layer up! Layer up! Layer up! Base layer: quick-dry shirt → mid-layer: thin fleece → outer layer: windproof jacket. Never wear pure cotton. Sweating and wind will chill you to the bone. Choose hiking shoes that are slip-resistant and waterproof. The forest trails have moss and wet mud. High-top shoes protect your ankles and keep bugs out. Sun protection! High latitude + forest means strong UV rays. SPF 50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sun hat are all essential. Don’t be fooled by the low temperature—sunburn is real. 💰 Cost reference for 5 days and 4 nights (per person) Round-trip airfare: 1,800–2,600 yuan (depending on departure city) Car rental for 5 days including fuel: about 1,200 yuan Tickets: 70 yuan (35 yuan each for two attractions) Meals for 5 days: about 600 yuan Accommodation for 4 nights: about 800–1,200 yuan Total per person: about 4,500–5,700 yuan Unbeatable value!!! 🌡️ A few heartfelt reminders ① In August, daytime highs in Huzhong are 20–22℃, with nights dropping below 5℃ Day-to-night temperature differences of 15–22℃ are normal, with extremes up to 26℃ ② Mobile signal in the forest is spotty. Download offline maps in advance. ③ The town has only one post office and two credit union ATMs. Bring enough cash as mobile payments aren’t fully supported. ④ July and August are rainy seasons. Showers come suddenly. Always carry a raincoat. ⑤ Entering the reserve requires prior registration. Ask your local driver about the process. This forest sea is quiet and peaceful, waiting for you to walk in, and take away all the summer heat for you🌿

Although it’s a bit disappointing not to see the aurora 💔 the sunsets I experienced were truly unforgettable! 🌅 📍 Mohe · Polaris Square (Address: West of the intersection of Zhenxing Street and Jiama Highway, Huma County, Daxing’anling Prefecture, Heilongjiang Province) Open 24 hours all year round ✅ Standing in the square overlooking the entire night view of Mohe thousands of lights shining brightly ✨ modern buildings look especially magical at night 🏙️ Photo tips: 1. Use long exposure to capture light trails from traffic 2. Stand at a high point to take panoramic shots with the cityscape 3. The best time for sunset and blue hour shots is 6–8 PM It’s recommended to visit both day and night for different experiences. The stairs are easy to climb and won’t tire you out Although missing the aurora is a bit of a pity this unique midnight romance of Mohe makes the trip worthwhile 😊

During summer vacation, our family of three plus grandparents traveled the Heilongjiang Greater Khingan Range along the China-North Korea-Russia border. We rented a car upon arrival and covered 4,000 km over 17 days. The biggest unexpected issue was roadwork on G331, so we had to change many plans and hotels last minute, missing a few places. We took it easy since the northeast is quite cool, and just wandering around felt comfortable. Everyone managed well~ 📍Overall itinerary: Day 1: Arrived in Harbin (since we visited Harbin a few years ago, this time we went to the Unit 731 Museum, then casually strolled Central Street in the evening and caught a stunning sunset by the river) Day 2: Picked up the rental car and headed to Qiqihar. We stayed at the Platinum Hotel Qiqihar (Wanda Plaza Longsha Zoo branch). We originally planned to visit the zoo but saw a well-reviewed hot spring next to the hotel, so we experienced the northeast scrubbing bath culture instead. In the evening, we had barbecue. The hot spring is Beiwai 47° Hot Spring. Day 3: Met a friend in the morning, then headed out in the afternoon to Zhalong Wetland. You must take the shuttle bus and then walk 2 km after getting off, which is quite far but worth it. Since it was my birthday, we rested at the hotel after visiting and then went to Wanda for dinner. Day 4: Headed to Wudalianchi. We stayed in the city and didn’t visit the scenic area immediately. After checking in, we went straight to the scenic spots. Laoheshan is currently closed, so we spent the afternoon at Erlong Spring, Beiyao Spring, and Longmen Shizhai. We ate in the city and then set off fireworks by the Namuer River. Day 5: Early morning, we heard about a big market and went to experience a northeast market. Then headed to Jiagedaqi, passing the Third Route Army site. We took the kids in for a look, then went straight to Jiagedaqi. After arriving, we walked around Beishan Forest Park and then looked for food. Day 6: Headed to Tahe. We first went to the love coordinate point. It wasn’t crowded and the place was small. Since it’s close to Tahe city, we took a walk. There’s not much to see in Tahe; it’s mainly for rest. Day 7: Headed to Mohe. First visited the 56 Fire Memorial Museum, highly recommended! Then went to the Mohe dance hall to let the kids experience the 1980s. There are many places to eat nearby. Walking leads to Polaris Square, with 153 steps, which is easy to climb and worth spending more time. Then headed to Beiji Village. Day 8: In Beiji Village, be sure to find a good guesthouse. Our host drove us around the village all day, showing us how to avoid crowds and tour groups. He knew the area well. We also bought delicious bread. We visited almost every place, focusing more on the northern route. There was a bonfire party in the village at night, which was fun to join. Day 9: Headed to Huma. We didn’t stop much along the way except at Shibazhan. In Huma county, we looked for food and rested. Day 10: Huma border crossing > 80-li Great Bay > Heihe. The toughest road I’ve ever driven, no contest!! G331 roadwork means lots of slopes, making it really hard to drive but still passable. Day 11: Aihui Ancient City (the museum is a must-see) > Daheihe Island > Heihe border crossing > Mother’s Square > night market Day 12: Headed to Yichun. It was dad’s birthday, so we didn’t visit many places. We found a spot to celebrate and then went to the night market (Yichun malls close at 7 PM!!) Day 13: Wuying National Forest Park (to feed squirrels) > Wudai Highway (about 100 km total; if you don’t want to drive the whole way, navigate to Baoyu Forest Eco Town) Day 14: Left early > Jinshan Deer Park > Hegang > bathhouse. Early morning mist was visible along the way and at the deer park. Day 15: Yulin Shooting Range > Hegang Mining Park Day 16: Headed to Jiamusi Xinghuo Village (a Korean ethnic community) > Jiamusi (mainly to visit friends, nothing special to report) Day 17: Headed to Harbin Airport to return the car and fly back to Beijing 🍛 About food: Use Dianping, it never disappoints. Portions are really large, impossible to finish!! ⛽ About road conditions: G331 roadwork is expected to last until 2027, so check conditions before coming. SUVs are better, but passing is difficult. There are many large construction vehicles, and if it rains, the road is even harder to drive. Sedans should be cautious. ☀ About weather: Even up to Beiji Village, it never felt very cold, just cool. There’s a big temperature difference between day and night. In the Greater Khingan Range, it usually gets light around 2 AM. 🛣️ About scenery: Whether in the Greater or Lesser Khingan Range, all the beautiful views are along the way

At the “golden rooster crown” of China’s map, on the eastern slope of the Greater Khingan Mountains, lies a border town embraced by the Heilongjiang River—Huma. It is the county with the longest border along the Russian frontier in Heilongjiang Province. The 371 km of border river scenery gives it a majestic presence described as “black water edging, golden roads paving.” Here is the real-life martial arts world from Jin Yong’s novels. Climb Ludingshan Mountain, where the mist seems to carry the clash of swords. Put on a martial arts costume and instantly step into a world of chivalry and justice. This is the northern border’s landscape gallery. From Huashan Mountain, you can gaze at the winding Heilongjiang River like a painting. Take a 40 km boat ride along the golden waterway to experience the unique charm of “one river, two countries.” In spring, enjoy the thrilling sight of ice floes racing down the border river. In summer, wander through the romantic sea of azaleas covering thousands of acres. In autumn, admire the colorful mountains on both banks as the forests turn vibrant. In winter, join the passionate celebration of the ice and snow martial arts culture week. The mysterious and ancient intangible cultural heritage of the Oroqen people adds soul to this land. Huma is more than a place name; it is a journey toward the distant, the martial world, and freedom. Transportation: The preferred option is to drive the G331, the most beautiful border highway; or fly to Heihe or Jiagedaqi and then transfer by car. Recommended itinerary: · One-day highlights: Morning at Ludingshan Mountain (inspiration for Jin Yong’s The Deer and the Cauldron, free admission) → Afternoon at Huashan Mountain (30 RMB ticket) → Evening at Riverside Park to watch the border river sunset · Two-day deep dive: Day 1 same as above; Day 2 visit the 80-li Great Bay (an impressive omega-shaped river bend) → Huma River Wetlands → Baiyin Na Oroqen Ethnic Village to experience intangible cultural heritage Accommodation: Recommended to stay in the county center, where heating is sufficient, dining is convenient, and the riverbank is a 10-minute walk. Food: Must-try dishes include iron pot stewed river fish and hazel mushroom stewed chicken, all affordable per person. Best season: Comfortable in summer and autumn; winter offers the ice and snow martial arts culture week experience. Tips: Search “Travel Huma” on WeChat mini-program for one-stop booking of food, lodging, and transportation.

Have you ever had a moment— standing on a land untouched by commercial influence breathing air with over 3,800 oxygen molecules per cubic centimeter and suddenly feeling like all the years before were just getting by The place I visited this time in midsummer July, when the whole country is melting from the heat here you need a quilt to sleep at night open the door at dawn and find a layer of white frost on the car roof the air is so cold it numbs your nose, but your heart feels warm and glowing 🛫 hardcore prep before departure First, transportation—this is a hurdle that discourages many but by 2026 it’s much easier ✈️ by plane: fly to Jagdaqi Gaxian Airport Beijing Daxing has 2 direct flights daily, about 3.5 hours Shanghai Pudong stops in Harbin, total about 6 hours pick up your car directly at the airport, book an SUV in advance forest roads sometimes have gravel sections, so a high-clearance SUV is safer 🚂 by train: Harbin → Jagdaqi has overnight sleeper trains departing in the evening and arriving in the morning sleep through the trip, hard sleeper costs about 260 yuan good for those not in a rush and wanting to save a night’s accommodation after arriving in Jagdaqi, rent a car and head north on S218 self-driving tips: S218 Jagdaqi → Songling → Huzhong is 280 km total this road itself is a hidden scenic route repaved in 2026, very smooth to drive passing through vast white birch forests and wetlands there are scenic parking spots every few dozen kilometers allow time for 1–2 stops to take photos 🌊 day 1 Huma River hike—the midsummer version of glacier red willow Huma River is the soul waterway running through Huzhong in summer the river is crystal clear and calm red willows sprout deep red new branches on both banks contrasting with the green larches, creating a surreal scene start from the town’s landmark square there’s a 5 km hiking trail along the river flat and easy, suitable for all ages the water is icy cold, bone-chilling even in summer crouch down and cup a handful to taste—so sweet it’s hard to believe it’s natural water at the trail’s end is a white birch forest sunlight filters through the leaves, casting golden spots walking on a soft carpet of pine needles feels more comfortable than any rug this spot is perfect for photos—anywhere you stand is a great shot 🌲 day 2 deep trek into the primeval forest—entering a 167,000-hectare secret realm this was the most breathtaking day of the trip no contest Huzhong national nature reserve China’s northernmost and largest cold temperate coniferous forest reserve total area 167,213 hectares equivalent to 230,000 standard soccer fields you must register in advance to enter the reserve hiring a local guide is essential don’t try to wander alone—you will get lost the guide led us on a 3.8 km loop trail underfoot was a thick layer of pine needles and moss above, dense Greater Khingan larches blocked the sky ferns taller than a person the air filled with the scent of pine resin and earth each breath felt like a deep lung cleanse along the way, the guide showed us various plants creeping pine—pines growing prostrate on rocks each shaped like a natural bonsai and many berries with names we couldn’t recall · ate July is peak berry season blueberries, red beans, and lingonberries carpet the forest floor ⚠️ no smoking or open flames allowed in the reserve strictly forbidden throughout the visit violators face serious consequences 🦌 day 3 reindeer tribe—a summer date with forest spirits the reindeer park in Huzhong is the most healing place I’ve seen unlike enclosed zoos the reindeer roam freely in the forest if you hold a basket of moss, they’ll come over on their own one especially clingy young reindeer followed me for a full 20 minutes nudging my palm with its nose for food with tiny pine lichens on its eyelashes its clear eyes melted my heart in summer, reindeer have plenty to eat tender grass, willow leaves, moss they eat almost all day watching them chew slowly makes time feel like it’s slowing down perfect for a slow visit—if you’re not in a hurry you could spend the whole afternoon here without getting bored 🫐 day 4 blueberry hunt + museum immersion—where art meets wild charm in the morning, we went to the blueberry picking area not a commercial greenhouse, but real bushes on a hillside short shrubs heavy with blue-purple berries picking and popping them into your mouth fingertips stained purple, smiles impossible to hide in the afternoon, we visited the reserve’s natural history museum there’s a 5D immersive experience zone simulating walking through dense forest mountain breeze on your face, rustling leaves all around using technology to bring the forest indoors a great backup plan for rainy days, highly recommended 🏡 at night, retreat into the forest’s embrace this time we stayed in a cabin on the edge of town all wood construction, windows opening to birch and larch no TV, no city noise only the sound of pine waves and occasional birdsong night temperatures just above 10°C, wrapped in a thick quilt watching stars appear one by one through the skylight the safety of falling asleep surrounded by forest can’t be found in any city five-star suite woken the next morning by sunlight and birdsong opening the curtains to mist weaving through treetops the whole world looks like a freshly painted
