If you want to get out for some fresh air this weekend but don't know where to go, I've visited these 4 off-the-beaten-path cities around Liaoning. There's the river city rime, a thousand-year-old white pagoda, a hometown of fossils, and the birthplace of the Manchu Qing Dynasty. They are less crowded, budget-friendly, and only about an hour away by high-speed rail. Sharing my honest recommendations with you all 😎 🌊 Jilin – The river city of the north, capital of rime Jilin is the only city in China that shares its name with its province. "Jilin Ula" means "city along the river" in Manchu. The Songhua River flows through the city in a reverse "S" shape, creating a landscape of "mountains on all four sides, water on three, with half the city's scenery reflected in the river." 📍 Location: Central Jilin Province. About 2 hours from Shenyang by high-speed rail to Jilin Station. 🚗 Transportation: Take the high-speed rail to Jilin Station. The old town and riverside are right outside the station. Don't get off at Jilin West Station by mistake. 🗺️ Itinerary: Day 1: Hike up Beishan Park for free. It features Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian temples on one mountain, including the Yuhuang Pavilion and Yaowang Temple. Take a walk along Songjiang Middle Road in the evening. Day 2: Wake up early and head to Rime Island. Leave before 6:30 AM to see the "thousands of pear trees in bloom" in the morning light; the rime starts to fall after 9:00 AM. In the afternoon, visit the Jilin Confucius Temple, one of the 4 major Confucius temples in China. 🍜 Food: A bowl of jianfen (pan-fried starch noodles) for CNY 9 is the soul of a local breakfast. Jilin is one of the birthplaces of guobaorou (sweet and sour pork). You can eat until you're stuffed at Pingxiangyuan for an average of CNY 30 per person. ⚠️ Note: You need to wake up early to see the rime. The best chance is on sunny, windless days with a large temperature difference between day and night. 🏛️ Liaoyang – The first city of the Northeast, with 2,300 years of history Liaoyang, anciently known as Xiangping, was the political, economic, and cultural center of the Northeast from the Warring States period to the end of the Ming Dynasty. With over 2,300 years of history, it is well-deservedly called the "first city of the Northeast." 📍 Location: Central Liaoning Province. 20 mins from Shenyang by high-speed rail. 🚗 Transportation: Take the high-speed rail to Liaoyang Station. White Pagoda Park is just a short walk from the station. 🗺️ Itinerary: Day 1: Liaoyang White Pagoda + Guangyou Temple. The White Pagoda is an ancient Liao Dynasty structure and the tallest brick pagoda in the Northeast, standing 71 meters tall with 8 sides and 13 stories; it's free all day. Guangyou Temple houses the world's largest bronze incense burner and the tallest indoor wooden gold-plated Buddha statue. In the afternoon, visit the Liaoyang Museum for free to learn about Liaodong history; the Cao Xueqin Memorial Hall and Wang Erlie Memorial Hall are on the way. Day 2: Tokyo City Ruins Park, the capital established by Nurhaci when he founded the Later Jin Dynasty. It is known as one of the "3 capitals outside the pass," along with Hetu Ala in Xinbin and Shenyang. 🍜 Food: Laoyangtou Roast Chicken costs about CNY 34 per person; it has a date-red color and the meat is tender enough to fall off the bone. Ta sugar is a Qing Dynasty tribute snack shaped like the White Pagoda. Sanxing Lamb Soup with fried rice cakes is the standard local breakfast. ⚠️ Note: Guangyou Temple and the White Pagoda are completely free. Don't fall for roadside scams charging for tower climbing. 🦕 Chaoyang – World capital of fossils, core of Hongshan culture Chaoyang is the place "where the first bird took flight and the first flower bloomed." The Niuheliang Hongshan Culture Site pushed the history of Chinese civilization back by a millennium. 📍 Location: Western Liaoning Province. About 1.5 hours from Shenyang by high-speed rail to Chaoyang Station. 🚗 Transportation: There is a CNY 5 tourist bus line from the high-speed rail station that connects core attractions like Fenghuang Mountain and Niuheliang. Taxis in the city are generally capped at CNY 15. 🗺️ Itinerary: Day 1: Bird Fossil National Geopark to see 125,000,000-year-old Sinosauropteryx and Confuciusornis fossils. Admission is CNY 80; 3–5 hours is recommended. In the afternoon, visit the Chaoyang North Pagoda Museum and climb the pagoda to see the Seven Treasures Sarira Pagoda. At night, Murong Street is full of atmosphere with red lanterns, and you can enter Youshun Temple for free. Day 2: Fenghuang Mountain, featuring 1 mountain, 3 temples, and 72 Sanyan cliff Buddha niches. There are easy and challenging routes to choose from. If you have extra time, you can visit the Niuheliang Site Park (admission CNY 100), where the Goddess Temple and stone burial mounds are truly stunning. 🍜 Food: Xiaoerlou Stewed Intestines costs about CNY 35 per person; it has a sweet, sour, and spicy flavor. The chicken leg tendon and oyster mushroom skewers are must-orders. Near Youshun Temple, you can buy a large portion of stewed intestines and fried skewers from old shops for over CNY 20. ⚠️ Note: The Bird Fossil Park is open from 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, so don't go too late in the afternoon. 🏯 Fushun – Birthplace of the Manchu Qing Dynasty, city of Lei Feng Fushun is the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty. Hetu Ala City is where Nurhaci proclaimed himself Khan, and it is also the birthplace of the Lei Feng spirit. 📍 Location: Eastern Liaoning Province. 25 mins from Shenyang by high-speed rail to Fushun North Station. 🚗 Transportation: 25 mins from Shenyang Station to Fushun North, or take the Lei Feng intercity bus for CNY 11. 🗺️ Itinerary: Day 1: Hetu Ala City, the birthplace of Manchu culture. The ancient city walls are great for photos. Admission is CNY 60, with half-price for students. Next door is the Yongling Tomb of the Qing Dynasty, the first of the 3 tombs outside the pass and a World Cultural Heritage site. Day 2: Lei Feng Memorial Hall, free admission, accessible by bus line 15. In the afternoon, visit the West Open-Pit Mine viewing platform, the largest open-pit mine in Asia, for a stunning industrial landscape. 🍜 Food: Fushun spicy mix (malaban) costs about CNY 15 per person and will leave you stuffed. The healing sensation of the sticky sauce has made it popular from school-gate stalls to national chains. ⚠️ Note: It is recommended to drive or charter a car to Hetu Ala City. The scenic area is open from 8:30 AM–5:00 PM. ⚠️ All 4 of these places are easily accessible by high-speed rail. In autumn, there is a large temperature difference between day and night, so bring a light jacket. Museums are generally closed on Mondays, so check before you go. You need to wake up early to see the rime in Jilin. You can finish the core spots in Chaoyang and Fushun in 1 day, and Liaoyang's attractions are compact enough to explore on foot. Pick one and go this weekend 🚄

Introduction to and history of the Niuheliang Archaeological Site and museum collections in Jianping County, Chaoyang City, Liaoning Province The Niuheliang Archaeological Site is located near G101 (Jingshen Line) in Fushan Subdistrict, Lingyuan City, Jianping County, Chaoyang City, Liaoning Province, China, 15 km west of the Jianping county seat. The Niuheliang site is one of the representative sites of the Hongshan Culture from the late Neolithic period in Northeast China. In 1981, archaeologists discovered many ancient artifacts at Niuheliang, including pottery, stone tools, and jade artifacts, all created by people during the Hongshan Culture period. Among these, pottery is one of the most representative artifacts at the Niuheliang site. Pottery is an important form of ancient Chinese craftsmanship, widely used in daily life and religious and ceremonial activities. A wide variety of pottery has been unearthed at the Niuheliang site, including pottery basins, pots, and bowls. These pottery pieces have unique shapes and exquisite decorations, holding high artistic and historical value. Among them, some painted pottery jars are hailed as treasures of ancient Chinese craftsmanship. The Niuheliang Archaeological Site Museum displays many exquisite pottery pieces. Among them, the painted pottery jars are one of the most eye-catching exhibits. These painted pottery jars feature unique shapes, exquisite patterns, and vibrant colors, representing the Hongshan Culture of the late Neolithic period. The painted pottery jars exhibited in the museum are replicas based on ancient production techniques and decorative methods. They not only recreate the superb skills of ancient artisans but also showcase the unique charm of ancient Chinese craftsmanship. The painted pottery jars on display in the museum are shown during the day, while at night they are featured in specific exhibition halls. These exhibition halls are uniquely designed with soft lighting, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the history and cultural significance of these painted pottery jars.

Liaoning holds so many surprises. Beyond Shenyang and Dalian, these four small cities are must-visit destinations. 🏯 Fushun Birthplace of the Qing Dynasty. Hetu Ala City is rich in Manchu culture. The Lei Feng Memorial Hall has touched a generation. Honghe Valley rafting is a must-do in summer. Eat: Mala ban, perilla leaf buns. Note: Attractions are scattered, so self-driving is recommended. 🏯 Chaoyang The kingdom of fossils. Visit the Bird Fossil National Geopark to see where the first bird took flight. Phoenix Mountain features ruins of the Three Yan ancient capital. Niuheliang is the source of the Hongshan culture. Eat: Wantuo, buckwheat noodles. Note: It is windy and dry, so bring lip balm. 🏯 Fuxin The eastern center of Tibetan Buddhism. Ruiying Temple is a 300-year-old ancient temple. Haitang Mountain features a complex of cliff statues. The Haizhou Open-pit Mine offers stunning industrial ruins. Eat: Mongolian meat pies, hand-grabbed meat. Note: Photography is not allowed inside the temples. 🏯 Panjin Red Beach is at its reddest in September. Travel by boat through the reed marshes. River crabs are at their fattest in autumn. Dingxiang Ecological Area is a bird-watching paradise. Eat: Panjin river crabs, stir-fried cattail shoots with meat. Note: The best time to visit Red Beach is September–October. Four cities, four distinct flavors. Fewer crowds, beautiful scenery, and plenty of stories. Pick a weekend and set off.

if you go to Chaoyang in September–October, do not join a tour group! All the best spots here are tucked away in little corners, and once you sit on a tour bus, that sense of stepping across a thousand years disappears 😭 I just got back, and while the impression is still fresh, I'm quickly typing up this warm-off-the-press guide for you. Honestly, autumn in Chaoyang and summer are completely different worlds. From mid-September to mid-October, temperatures sit around 12–22°C, pleasantly cool, with clear skies—perfect for wandering outdoors. By mid to late October, Phoenix Mountain is covered in red leaves with ancient pagodas; every shot is wallpaper-worthy. But friends, remember the temperature swings between day and night can be dramatic—you might wear short sleeves by day and need a lightweight shell jacket at night. Don't dismiss a thin down jacket as bulky; bring one just in case 🧥 First, a quick heads-up about transportation! When buying tickets, pay close attention: Chaoyang station and Chaoyang South station differ by only one character, but they can be tens of kilometers apart. After you get off the high-speed train, getting around downtown is pretty convenient—the starting fare is cheap, and nothing costs much. But if you plan to visit suburban sites like the Niuheliang ruins or Mount Dahei, trust me: rent a car for a day locally; it'll only cost about CNY 200–300. Attractions are scattered like stars, so you can't rely on buses; splitting the cost among several friends for a car is the most economical. Don't ever wait alone for a bus in the suburbs at night—the buses are scarce after dark, and you might freeze in the wind without getting picked up 😅 How to get around? I've planned a relaxed 3-day itinerary with no rushing 👇 Day 1: take it easy in the city. In the morning, visit Chaoyang Museum—it's free, and there are guided tours at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM; join one to get a solid grasp of the city's past and present. In the afternoon, go to the Beita Museum—make sure to take the guided tour; the tower-within-a-tower and the five-generations-under-one-roof sights are breathtaking in person. Admission is CNY 60. In the evening, stroll along Murong Street—the name was hand-inscribed by Mr. Jin Yong—and the shops are full of fossil-themed souvenirs. For nightlife, check out Longshan Night Market or Liucheng Night Market for great street food. Day 2: dedicate to fossils and ancient civilizations. In the morning, visit the National bird fossil geopark—the museum built on the fossil site gives you goosebumps; the Chinese dragon-bird and ancient Liaoning fruit fossils are textbook-rewriting finds. Allow 3–4 hours to take it all in. In the afternoon head straight to the Niuheliang Hongshan culture site to see a goddess head that's more than 5,000 years old; standing before the cairn tombs makes you feel suddenly very small, and it's hard to put that feeling into words. Day 3: hike Phoenix Mountain. At 660 meters high, it's not very tall but it feels imposing. There are three ancient pagodas and four temples on the mountain; the pagoda at Yunji Temple is particularly exquisite. From the summit you can look out over all of Chaoyang, and an autumn breeze seems to blow all your worries away. If you don't want to hike the whole way, the sightseeing shuttle is CNY 10 one-way per person—it's easier and still lets you enjoy the views. When it comes to food, Chaoyang's cuisine is seriously underrated! Nanyuan pig face is a provincial intangible cultural heritage dish, stewed in a 50-year-old broth and a 36-herb marinade. It's rich but not greasy and melts in your mouth—a CNY 40 portion feeds three people, and it's even better inside a sesame flatbread. Lingyuan's tofu pudding with baked sesame flatbread is a breakfast double delight: CNY 6 per bowl for silky tofu that tastes like pudding, and the flatbread is CNY 3 each—crispy outside, soft inside, with sesame aroma that will make the next table jealous. There's also stewed intestines, Chaoyang's most authentic snack: potatoes braised until meltingly tender in a thick, sweet-and-sour broth—only CNY 6 a bowl. If you're in a group, try the Prince's pot: a 40-jin (about 20 kg) iron wok cooked on the spot, using beef chuck cap with sauerkraut, corn cakes dipped in the broth; it's full of wok hei, and at CNY 50 per person you'll be stuffed. For accommodation, I suggest staying around the old town in Shuangta District. It's within walking distance of Beita, Murong Street, and Nanta, and convenient for night markets. I stayed at Yuwei Homestay—the rooms were clean, the projector was very clear, and the host was friendly; it's close to RT‑Mart and many restaurants and has a 9.5 rating. Midu Homestay is also good, with duplex lofts and self check-in, just over 1 km from Chaoyang South station. If you want to relax in hot springs, Longteng Hot Spring Resort is only about a 10–15 minute drive from downtown. Here are a few of my favorite photo spots 📸 The best vantage point for autumn on Phoenix Mountain is the stretch between Moyun Tower and Huayan Temple; the colorful trees with warm autumn sunlight look great in any shot. At Niuheliang, the red earth cliffs with golden dead grasses create a desolate, historical atmosphere that needs no filter—every snap looks cinematic. For Dalinhe Wetland Park, go around 8:00 AM—the river often has mist as the sun rises over the opposite hills, giving you both blue-hour and sunrise light. Don't miss the night view of the north and south pagodas—the lit pagodas next to the restored traditional buildings create a strong ancient atmosphere. A few last tips to avoid pitfalls—write these down 📝 Beita Museum is closed from 11:30 AM–1:30 PM, so don't go at midday expecting it to be open. Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes for rural sites—the ground is dirt and loose stones, so definitely avoid high heels. If you're driving, speed limit signs on mountain roads are small. Don't let navigation pressure you into speeding—fines aren't cheap. If someone around a scenic area tries to sell health products or overpriced souvenirs, politely decline and only buy what you need. My biggest takeaway from the trip is that Chaoyang is a small treasure city that's been misjudged because of its name. Everyone knows the Chaoyang in Beijing, but this Chaoyang in Liaoning hides the dawn of 5,000 years of civilization and fossil legends that date back hundreds of millions of years.

Many people only know Shenyang and Dalian when visiting Liaoning, but they don't know what a hidden gem Chaoyang is! This is the place where the first bird took flight and the first flower bloomed. It boasts 5,000 years of Hongshan culture, the ancient capital of the Three Yan, ancient pagodas, fossils, and beautiful mountain scenery. It's uncrowded and affordable—perfect for history buffs and families with children alike✨ 🚗 Transportation & Accommodation Guide 💡 High-speed trains go directly to Chaoyang Station, and it's easy to take a taxi to attractions in the city. The Niuheliang Site is far from the city center, so renting a car is the best experience. For accommodation, prioritize the Shuangta District. It's close to Murong Street and the North Pagoda, making dining and shopping convenient. There are many hotel and homestay options with great value. 🗓 A Relaxed 3-Day Itinerary, No Rushing Day 1 | Fossil Exploration, Unlocking Billion-Year-Old Secrets 🦴 In the morning, visit the Bird Fossil National Geopark, Chaoyang's top attraction! See the museum's treasures, the Sinosauropteryx and Liaoning Archaefructus, and witness traces of life from hundreds of millions of years ago. You can also try fossil digging, which kids love. Allow 3–4 hours to explore at a leisurely pace. For lunch, try the signature pork rib steamed dumplings—thin skin, juicy filling, and bursting with flavor. In the afternoon, visit the Chaoyang Museum. Admission is free! There are free guided tours daily to help you understand the history of the Three Yan. In the evening, stroll along Murong Street, explore the ancient street, and see the North Pagoda. This ancient pagoda, which has survived five dynasties, houses the relics of Sakyamuni. The evening light makes it perfect for photos. Day 2 | Seeking the Roots of Hongshan, Exploring the Dawn of Civilization 🏺 Spend the whole day at the Niuheliang National Archaeological Site Park, the birthplace of Chinese civilization! The Goddess Temple, stone mounds, and altars are here, and this is where the Jade Pig Dragon was unearthed. Experience the beliefs of our ancestors from 5,000 years ago. Remember to book in advance via their official WeChat account; it is closed on Mondays. Return to the city in the afternoon and stop by Youshun Temple on the way. It's a quiet, ancient temple, perfect for a peaceful stroll. In the evening, head to Longshan Night Market to try local snacks and experience the vibrant atmosphere of this small city. Day 3 | Forest Bathing and Temple Blessings 🙏 Spend the day at Fenghuang Mountain, the ancestral home of Buddhism in Northeast China! The forest is dense, with cliff carvings, ancient pagodas, and temples scattered throughout. Climb to the top for a view of the Daling River; the autumn foliage is stunning. If you're not up for a long hike, you can take the scenic shuttle bus for an easy tour. Before heading down and leaving, be sure to try the "Prince Pot" (Taiziguo), a must-eat for locals when dining out. 🍜 Must-Eat Food List in Chaoyang ✅ Pork rib steamed dumplings: A Chaoyang signature, fresh and delicious, a must-try ✅ Prince Pot (Taiziguo): Rich in sauce, a variety of ingredients stewed in one pot ✅ No. 6 Sausage: A local specialty, savory and satisfying ✅ Stewed sausage: A soulful street snack, sweet and sour ✅ Lingyuan lamb soup: Milky white broth, served with clay oven-baked flatbread ⚠️ Travel Tips ❗ 1. The Niuheliang Site and Chaoyang Museum are closed on Mondays. Plan your itinerary to avoid Mondays and bring your ID for reservations 2. The Bird Fossil Park is large, so wear comfortable shoes and bring drinking water 3. The temperature difference between day and night in Western Liaoning is significant. Even if you visit in summer, bring a light jacket 4. Portions of Northeast Chinese cuisine are huge. Don't order too much at once to avoid waste 5. When visiting ancient sites, please protect the artifacts. Do not touch or deface the exhibits

I thought Chaoyang was just an ordinary small city, but once I got there, I realized it's the "Dragon City," the birthplace of Hongshan culture. Three days just isn't enough to see it all. 🏛️ Trip highlights Chaoyang North Pagoda, Fenghuang Mountain, Niuheliang Hongshan Culture Site, and the Bird Fossil National Geopark. With ancient pagodas, ancient culture, and dinosaur fossils, you can see 5,000 years of history in just one city. 🚗 Itinerary Day 1: Travel from Shenyang to downtown Chaoyang, visit the North Pagoda, and explore Youshun Temple Day 2: Travel from Chaoyang to Niuheliang, explore the Hongshan Culture Site, and see the Goddess Temple Day 3: Travel from Chaoyang to Fenghuang Mountain, hike to the summit for a panoramic view of the Dragon City 🍲 Food recommendations Lingyuan tofu pudding, Kazuo lamb soup, Chaoyang stew, and fried sea shrimp. It's full of local flavor—a bowl of lamb soup will warm you right up. ⚠️ Travel tips Fenghuang Mountain has many stairs, so wear comfortable shoes. The site area is sunny, so remember sun protection. Some attractions are closed on Mondays.

Save this and share it with your fellow parents—let's go this National Day!

Can you believe it? There is a city in Liaoning where two ancient pagodas from over a thousand years ago stand right in the city center. You are just a few steps away from Hongshan Culture sites, and you could practically dig up fossils anywhere. This place is Chaoyang, a city that has "profound history" etched into its DNA. This time, I stayed at a hotel by the Daling River. My room had floor-to-ceiling windows facing the river, and I could see the light show on the opposite bank at night. The best part is that it is just a 10-minute walk from the hotel to North Pagoda Square. That 1,500-year-old pagoda stands right there, and it has such a great atmosphere when it lights up at night. I couldn't wait to head to North Pagoda Square after dropping off my luggage. At dusk, locals were dancing, taking walks, and flying kites in the square, with the ancient pagoda standing quietly behind them. The sight of modern life sharing the frame with a thousand-year-old relic was truly magical. I stood there for a long time, thinking how lucky the people in this city are to be able to face a thousand years of history every day. 🏛️ Niuheliang Hongshan Culture Site: Touching the dawn of 5,000 years of civilization You must visit Niuheliang when coming to Chaoyang. Many people may not have heard of this place, but its status in the archaeological world is incredibly high—it pushed the history of Chinese civilization back by over a thousand years, proving that a highly developed civilization existed here 5,000 years ago. The site is in Lingyuan City, about a 1-hour drive from downtown Chaoyang. The scenic area is large, with the Goddess Temple site and the Altar and Cairn complex being the core attractions. The Goddess Temple is the most awe-inspiring place for me. It is a sacrificial site from over 5,000 years ago. Although only the foundations and ruined walls remain, standing there allows you to imagine its scale back then. The most famous find is the unearthed Goddess head sculpture. Although it is a replica, the expression on the face is incredibly vivid, with eyes inlaid with jade, making it look lifelike. It is truly amazing that people 5,000 years ago could create such exquisite sculptures. The altar and cairn complex are on the mountain, consisting of circular and square structures built with stones. It is said that this is the earliest embodiment of the Chinese concept of "round heaven and square earth." Looking down from the mountaintop, the circles of stone formations are neatly arranged. The sense of mystery and solemnity of this prehistoric civilization is truly indescribable. There is also a museum in the scenic area, displaying many unearthed artifacts, such as jade pig dragons, cloud-shaped jade pendants, painted pottery, and more. I recommend visiting the museum before the site so that you will have a better sense of it when you see the ruins. 💡 Tips from personal experience: The CNY 60 admission ticket includes both the museum and the site; I recommend hiring a guide, otherwise, you might not understand much; a guide costs CNY 100 per tour, which is very cost-effective if you split the cost with others; the site area is on a mountain and can be very windy, so bring a jacket; the whole tour takes 3–4 hours, so wear comfortable shoes; photography is not allowed inside the Goddess Temple, so please follow the rules 🗼 North Pagoda + Murong Street: The hustle and bustle of daily life beneath a thousand-year-old pagoda The North Pagoda is a landmark of Chaoyang, originally built during the Northern Wei Dynasty, over 1,500 years ago. Its most unique feature is the "pagoda within a pagoda, pagoda wrapping a pagoda" structure—the Northern Wei pagoda contains even earlier structures inside. Archaeologists have discovered layers of history from the Northern Wei to the Liao Dynasty inside the pagoda, like a three-dimensional history book. Beneath the pagoda, there is an underground palace and a museum displaying artifacts unearthed from within. The most precious items are the Buddha relics and the Seven-Treasure Reliquary. The underground palace is very cool, making it especially comfortable to visit in the summer. Next to the North Pagoda is Murong Street, a commercial street built in an ancient style, selling various antiques, calligraphy, paintings, and local specialties. The street is not long but has a lot of character. The buildings are in the style of the Liao Dynasty, which fits the atmosphere of the North Pagoda perfectly. North Pagoda Square is very lively at night, with people square dancing and livestreaming their singing. The ancient pagoda looks exceptionally solemn under the lights, creating a wonderful contrast with the hustle and bustle of daily life below. I highly recommend coming here to sit for a while at night and experience this local life beneath the thousand-year-old pagoda. 💡 Tips from personal experience: The North Pagoda Museum ticket is CNY 20; Murong Street is free, but you should know how to haggle when buying things; it is hard to tell if fossils are real or fake, so don't buy expensive ones if you don't know much about them; there is a light show at North Pagoda Square at night, so ask the locals for the specific time 🗺️ One-day historical and cultural tour of Chaoyang Morning: Niuheliang Hongshan Culture Site (requires most of the day) Afternoon: Return to downtown > North Pagoda Museum > Stroll around Murong Street Evening: View the night scenery at North Pagoda Square > End The city of Chaoyang is truly an underrated treasure trove of history and culture. It does not have much flashy packaging, nor does it have swarms of tourists, but what it does have is authentic history—5,000 years of Hongshan Culture and thousand-year-old pagodas. If you are also interested in history, you should really come to Chaoyang.

What is the Niuheliang National Archaeological Site Park like? Niuheliang is a mountain ridge located at the border of Jianping County and Lingyuan City, both under the jurisdiction of Chaoyang City, Liaoning Province. Three hilly ridges, each about 10 kilometers long, run through the Nuluerhu Valley. It is named Niuheliang (meaning "Ox River Ridge") because the narrow Mangniu River meanders through it. The site contains a cluster of Hongshan Culture relics from the late Neolithic period, dating back approximately 5800 to 5000 years. These relics include temples, altars, and stone mounds, and have yielded precious artifacts such as sculptures, painted pottery, and jade objects. The Niuheliang Hongshan Culture site is of great significance in the history of Chinese archaeology. The discovery of a large altar, a goddess temple, stone mounds, and pyramid-like structures dating back approximately 5500 years pushed back the history of Chinese civilization by more than 1000 years, earning Niuheliang the title of "the new dawn of Eastern civilization." The altars, temples, and tombs of the Hongshan Culture represent the highest level of prehistoric culture known in northern China, pushing the study of the origins of Chinese civilization back from 4,000 to 5,000 years ago, and expanding the study of ancient Chinese history from the traditional Yellow River basin to the Xiliao River basin north of the Yanshan Mountains. The open areas of the Niuheliang National Archaeological Site Park include the Site 1 (Goddess Temple) Protection and Exhibition Hall, the Site 2 (Stone Mounds and Altar) Protection and Exhibition Hall, and the Niuheliang Site Museum. The Goddess Temple is the site where the clay goddess head, considered the "common ancestor of the Chinese nation," was unearthed. It is currently the earliest ancestral temple discovered in China, proving that the Hongshan people had developed from nature worship and totem worship to ancestor worship. The second floor of the exhibition hall offers a panoramic view of the Goddess Temple site. The Goddess Temple has been temporarily closed for construction since June 8, 2026, and is expected to reopen after October 1, 2026. Ancient Chinese people called raised mounds "zhong," and stone mounds are a type of Hongshan Culture burial site constructed of piled stones. According to expert research, the stone mounds at Niuheliang are the royal tombs of the Hongshan people more than 5,000 years ago. Each mound contains multiple tombs, categorized into three levels: a large central tomb, medium-sized stone-built tombs, and small stone-built tombs. The large central tomb represents the highest level, and the tomb owner possessed a regal bearing, indicating that the Hongshan people already had a primitive concept of hierarchy and social status. At the center of the stone mounds is a three-tiered circular altar, providing evidence of the ancient people's evolution from "sweeping the ground for sacrifices—building an altar—to worshipping the heavens at the circular mound." This reflects the Hongshan people's concept of heaven and earth worship and profoundly influenced the architectural form of altars and sacrificial rituals in later generations. The Goddess Temple is located atop the main ridge of Niuheliang, facing south. The altar is situated directly south of the Goddess Temple on a ridge lower than the main ridge, presenting a "north temple, south altar" layout and forming a north-south central axis. This may be the earliest rudimentary form of a central axis in China. The Niuheliang Site Museum mainly exhibits artifacts discovered during the Niuheliang archaeological excavation, including jade objects of various shapes such as goddess statues and jade pig-dragons. However, most of these are replicas, but since you're already there, you might as well take a look. Overall, it's definitely worth a visit. The entrance fee is 60 yuan, parking is 10 yuan per visit with no time limit, and the sightseeing bus is 20 yuan (I'll talk about how to save on the sightseeing bus ticket in the next post). Currently, the Goddess Temple is under construction and closed to the public. The museum is very generous, offering a discounted entrance fee of 50 yuan. I recommend it to anyone interested in history.

Niuheliang National Archaeological Park: The "Altar, Temple, and Tomb" from 5,000 Years Ago Departing from downtown Chaoyang, drive along the national highway toward Jianping and Lingyuan for about an hour, and you will start seeing signs for "Niuheliang National Archaeological Park." Located at the border of Jianping County and Lingyuan City, the site is the largest known complex of the Hongshan Culture. It covers a protected area of nearly 60 square kilometers, with 51 confirmed archaeological sites. Dating back approximately 5,500 to 5,000 years, it belongs to the late Neolithic Age. Museum The first stop is usually the Niuheliang Site Museum. The museum has an exhibition area of nearly 3,500 square meters, divided into 7 thematic units such as "Dawn of Civilization," "Ancient Hongshan Kingdom," and "Ancestors of Humanity." Among the more than 500 cultural relics on display, the jade pig-dragon and the cloud-shaped jade ornaments are the most eye-catching. A total of 183 jade artifacts have been unearthed from the 4 currently excavated locations at the site. Hongshan Culture jade artifacts represent the first peak in the history of prehistoric jade development in China. Goddess Temple After leaving the museum, take the scenic shuttle bus to the first location—the Goddess Temple Protection and Exhibition Hall. The building's exterior resembles a "floating jade box." The Goddess Temple is situated on Platform No. 9 and serves as the core sacrificial building of the site. Clay goddess head sculptures were unearthed inside the temple, and archaeologists believe this was a place where the Hongshan ancestors worshipped their forebears. The entire building complex at the first location covers an area of about 100,000 square meters, with 9 large platforms built around 5,800 years ago. Altar and Stone Mound Tombs The design concept for the second location's protection and exhibition hall is a "deformed jade pig-dragon." This is the site of the altar and the stone mound tombs. The altar features a triple concentric circle structure with a maximum diameter of 22 meters; the three tiers correspond to the Winter Solstice, the Equinoxes, and the Summer Solstice. Archaeologist Su Bingqi summarized it as "The Altar, Temple, and Tomb of the Hongshan Culture are a symbol of Chinese civilization." The sacrificial concepts of "Temple in the North, Altar in the South" and "Revering Heaven and Ancestors" had already formed a system 5,500 years ago. Practical Information · Admission ticket: CNY 60/person · Scenic shuttle bus: CNY 20/person (mandatory, as the exhibition halls are far apart) · Opening hours: 9:00 AM–4:00 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM) · Transportation: Driving is recommended; navigate to "Niuheliang Site Museum." You can take a high-speed train to Niuheliang Station or Jianping Station, then transfer to the scenic shuttle bus. · Parking fee: CNY 10/visit The visit takes about 3 to 4 hours. Hiring a guide is recommended. Without one, the ruins before you are just mounds of dirt and stones. This site pushes the origins of Chinese civilization back by five or six hundred years and is well worth a visit.

The discovery of altars, temples, tombs, and other sites, along with precious jade artifacts, provides conclusive and abundant archaeological evidence that as early as the late Hongshan Culture period, 5000 years ago, the social structure had already developed to the stage of an ancient state, a form of primitive civilization. It provides powerful material evidence for the 5,000-year history of Chinese civilization and has had a significant impact on the study of the social development history, traditional cultural history, intellectual history, religious history, architectural history, and art history of ancient China. The site is located at the border of Lingyuan City and Jianping County, Chaoyang City, Liaoning Province. Belonging to the late Neolithic Hongshan Culture period, dating back 5500 to 5000 years, it represents the first stage of the ancient state era, a key achievement of the Chinese Civilization Origins Project, and is a national key cultural relics protection unit. In 2004, the Niuheliang site was listed as a key major archaeological site by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.

If you're visiting Chaoyang to explore its historical sites, your first stop should definitely be the Chaoyang Museum. It's the most valuable and underrated urban treasure museum in western Liaoning, housing nearly 10,000 artifacts, including over 190 first-class national treasures. The entire exhibition connects the Hongshan prehistoric civilization, the Murong Dynasty of the Three Yan states, and the cultural heritage of the Liao and Jin dynasties. From the jade ritual civilization of 5,000 years ago to the hegemony of Longcheng during the Sixteen Kingdoms period, and then to the changes in western Liaoning over a millennium, this museum offers a complete understanding of Chaoyang's 5,000-year-old history. Many people head straight for the ancient pagodas and temples, missing this cultural core that truly reveals Chaoyang's profound heritage. Chaoyang, formerly known as "Longcheng," is the ancient capital of the Three Yan states and the core birthplace of the Hongshan culture. Five thousand years ago, the Hongshan people carved jade here to worship heaven, initiating the Chinese dragon totem civilization. During the Wei, Jin, and Sixteen Kingdoms period, the Murong Xianbei established their capital in Longcheng here. The Former Yan, Later Yan, and Northern Yan dynasties dominated the north, leaving behind a brilliant Xianbei culture and horse-riding civilization. During the Sui, Tang, Liao, and Jin dynasties, this place was a hub for transportation, trade, and the spread of Buddhism in Northeast China. As time passed and dynasties fell, countless treasures were left here, silently telling the magnificent history of western Liaoning. Optimal tour route: from bottom to top, avoiding backtracking. First floor: "The Three Yan Dynasties Special Exhibition" → Second floor: "Linghe Memory General History Exhibition" → Third floor: "Temporary Special Exhibition". We strongly recommend taking the free guided tour: free guided tours are available daily at 10:00 and 14:00. Hearing the stories is far more impactful than simply viewing the exhibits. First floor: The Three Yan Dynasties - A must-see. The entire floor focuses on the history of the Murong Xianbei Longcheng, immersing visitors in the strongest cavalry civilization of the Northern Dynasties. The highlight of the museum is a gold hairpin shaped like a flowering tree, a headdress exclusive to Xianbei nobles. Its gold leaves are as thin as cicada wings, swaying and fluttering in the slightest breeze, showcasing the romantic elegance of the Xianbei people. Also on display are gilded saddles, ancient horse harnesses, and iron cavalry equipment, testifying to the ancient glory of Chaoyang, a city renowned for its "warhorses and powerful armies," representing the pinnacle of ancient Northeast military culture. On the second floor, the "Linghe Memory" exhibit traces the essence of history from prehistoric times and the Hongshan Culture to the Liao, Jin, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The museum's crown jewel, the Hongshan Jade Pig-Dragon, is absolutely the grand finale! Carved by our ancestors five thousand years ago, this dragon-shaped jade artifact features simple yet grand lines, representing the earliest physical source of the Chinese dragon totem and a living fossil of Chinese jade civilization. In addition, exquisite pieces such as the Western Zhou Thunder Pattern Handled Wine Vessel, the Warring States Period Bronze Sword of the King of Yan, and the Tang Dynasty Tricolor Glazed Three-Legged Jar clearly demonstrate the fusion and collision of Central Plains culture and Liaoxi civilization. The Confuciusornis fossil on display also truly lives up to Chaoyang's reputation as a "treasure trove of paleontological fossils." The third floor features temporary special exhibitions, which are updated regularly with thematic exhibitions on Liaoxi intangible cultural heritage, calligraphy and painting, and archaeology, offering new surprises with each visit. Must-See Cultural Relics and Historical Stories: 1. Jade Pig-Dragon: A sacrificial ritual object used by the Hongshan people 5,000 years ago, symbolizing prayers to heaven and reverence for nature, and is material evidence of the origin of Chinese dragon culture. 2. Gold Hairpin: A symbol of status for nobles of the Three Yan states, worn by Murong women, its shimmering gold leaves also representing the unique Xianbei aesthetics of Liaoxi. 3. Yan King's Sword: A royal sword from the Warring States period, unearthed in Chaoyang, proving that Liaoxi was already deeply integrated into the Central Plains dynasties in ancient times. Concierge-Level Visitor Information: 1. Admission is free. Please bring your ID card for real-name entry. Closed all day on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip. 2. Opening Hours: 9:00–16:30, last entry at 16:00. We recommend allowing 1.5–2 hours for a leisurely visit. 3. Flash photography and touching the artifacts in the display cases are prohibited inside the exhibition halls to protect these millennia-old relics. 4. For those who enjoy collecting stamps for cultural and creative products, free stamps and brochures are available at the front desk. Related Historical Sites: After visiting the museum, you can also visit the North Pagoda, Youshun Temple, and Murong Street, connecting these historical sites along the way. Travel Summary: The beauty of Chaoyang lies not only in its mountains, rivers, and ancient temples, but also in its 5,000 years of accumulated civilization. The Chaoyang Museum avoids the hustle and bustle of popular tourist destinations, yet it houses three core historical sites: the origins of the Chinese dragon, the hegemony of the Three Yan states, and the cultural heritage of western Liaoning. Understanding this museum is key to truly understanding why Chaoyang is the premier historical and cultural city in Northeast China. When traveling to western Liaoning, dedicating half a day to immersing yourself in the exhibition, traveling back in time to touch the ancient jade of Hongshan Mountain and gazing back at Murong Longcheng is the most meaningful way to experience the region's history. Chaoyang is beautiful|but we sincerely don’t recommend visiting in August or September! The honest travel guide✨ Often underestimated, the hidden gem of Chaoyang in Liaoning truly holds the most soothing everyday life and ancient charm in Northeast China! Only after seeing the sea of clouds rolling over Phoenix Mountain, chasing the sunset glow at Niuheliang, and wandering the thousand-year tranquility of the Liao Dynasty ancient pagodas, will you understand how stunning the gentle and profound “Dragon City ancient capital” really is. There are no crowds, no over-commercialized noise, just gentle landscapes, historic sites, and affordable prices. Every stroll is full of relaxation and beautiful scenery. But! Here’s the heartfelt truth💬 Chaoyang is beautiful, but we do not recommend traveling here specifically in August or September! No exaggeration or criticism, just real traveler experiences with all pros and cons laid out. If you’re planning a trip, be sure to read this to avoid pitfalls! 🌧️Why avoid Chaoyang in August and September? The real travel drawbacks Many people think early autumn is the best time to travel, but August and September in Chaoyang are really an awkward travel period, and the experience will be greatly compromised! 1. Hot and humid rainy season + sudden severe weather, travel depends on luck August in Chaoyang is like an immersive sauna, with very little temperature difference between day and night. Daytime feels like 35℃+, the air is hot and humid, and it feels sticky. Hiking and visiting outdoor historic sites means sweating nonstop, makeup melts instantly, and even walking feels exhausting. Plus, these two months are Chaoyang’s main flood season. Thunderstorms, strong winds, and severe weather often hit in the afternoon and evening. Heavy rain and flooded roads are common. Planned mountain hikes or sunset visits are likely to be ruined by sudden downpours, making outdoor activities impossible. 2. Scenery lacks highlights, missing peak beauty Chaoyang’s breathtaking scenery is never at its best in summer or autumn! In August and September, the forests are just a single deep green, without the spring blossoms or the colorful autumn foliage. Photos look dull and flat. Especially at the atmospheric spots like Niuheliang and Phoenix Mountain, without seasonal colors, the popular photo spots rarely produce great shots, and you won’t see the city’s most beautiful side. 3. Poor transportation support makes rainy travel twice as hard Chaoyang’s attractions are very spread out, with long distances between sites. City buses are infrequent and don’t cover all areas, so daily travel mostly relies on taxis or driving. In the rainy season, taxis are hard to get and expensive. Mountain roads are slippery, visibility is poor for drivers, and driving risks increase. Some mountain attractions have limited facilities, with few restrooms or supply points. Rainy day visits are tiring and uncomfortable, seriously affecting your mood. 4. Strong UV rays cause frequent sunburn and tanning Don’t think you won’t get sunburned after the start of autumn! Chaoyang’s summer and autumn UV rays are very strong. Open forests and grasslands expose you to intense midday sun that easily causes sunburn. Even on cloudy days, you can get tanned without realizing it. Without proper protection, you’ll suffer the whole time. ✅Highly recommended! Short on time and heavy on tasks? Keep this ultimate exhibition route handy! ⏱️ My record: 50 minutes, 5 exhibition halls, over 8,000 steps, and a rewarding experience! 🎯 Core strategy: head straight to the third floor! The essence of Liaobo is mostly concentrated in exhibition halls 15, 16, 17, and 18 on the third floor. If time is limited, go straight there—don’t linger on the first or second floors. 🏛️ must-see exhibition hall recommendations Halls 15–18: Liaobo’s crown jewels and major artifacts are mostly here, the cream of the crop. Halls 17 and 18 each house a national-level artifact prohibited from leaving the country for exhibition, making them extremely valuable. Prehistoric civilization area: If you love history, don’t miss the exhibits from the Chahai site and the Niuliang Hongshan culture. Seeing those artifacts from textbooks in person instantly connects the dots—it’s a truly amazing feeling! 🚫 National treasure-level artifacts prohibited from leaving the country (currently two on permanent display) Liaobo has 7 national-level artifacts banned from leaving the country for exhibition, but most of the precious calligraphy and paintings are too fragile to be on permanent display. The two you can reliably see in the exhibition halls now are: Duck-shaped glass vessel (Hall 17, Northern Yan period of the Sixteen Kingdoms): pale green and translucent with a unique shape. Research shows it was imported from the Roman Empire via the Silk Road across the steppes, a precious witness to cultural exchange between China and abroad during the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties. Celadon flying fish water container (Hall 18, Five Dynasties period): an outstanding example of Yaozhou kiln celadon, with a fresh and lively shape, a masterpiece among Five Dynasties ceramics. 💔 A little regret Several famous calligraphy and paintings I wanted to see this time were missing, including Ouyang Xun’s "Zhongni Mengdian Tie," Tang dynasty copy of Wang Xizhi’s "Wansui Tongtian Tie," and Song Huizong’s "Cursive Thousand Character Classic," all national treasures banned from leaving the country. The much-anticipated Yuan blue-and-white porcelain was also perfectly missed due to crowds and time constraints. That’s for next time! ✅ Practical tips Time management: If you have about 1 hour, take the elevator straight to the third floor once inside. Don’t hesitate. Do your homework: Check the official website or mini program for temporary exhibitions and exhibit info before you go. Calligraphy and painting exhibitions sometimes showcase rare treasures. Leave some desire: Liaobo is worth visiting again and again. What you miss this time is a good reason to come back! Though 50 minutes is tight, Liaobo’s solid collection still left me thrilled. Do you prefer to savor museums slowly or check them off quickly? See you in the comments 👇

🌿 The breeze in western Liaoning in July is just right, much more comfortable than the sticky heat down south. Chaoyang, a small city often underestimated, is perfect for a slow weekend getaway. First, the part I want to revisit the most—the best spots for photos since you’re here anyway 📸. Photo spots Be sure to visit Phoenix Mountain at dusk. Standing on the summit, you can see the Daling River winding around the city. The sunset stretches the tower’s shadow long, and wearing a light-colored dress for backlit silhouette shots is amazing 🕊️. Don’t miss the night view at Beita Square. The Liao Dynasty ancient tower lit up creates a great atmosphere. Use a wide-angle lens from below and have someone stand midway on the steps for a perfect social media grid shot. The National Bird Fossil Geopark has a bit of a Jurassic Park vibe. With the boardwalk and fossil wall as a backdrop, wearing a straw hat while walking gives off a lively energy 🦖. Also, the reeds by the Daling River are perfectly green in July. Visit half an hour before or after sunset when the water sparkles gold. The photo of sitting by the shore swinging your legs is one I could look at a hundred times 🌅. ⚠️ Tips to avoid pitfalls Chaoyang’s attractions are really spread out. The Niuhuliang Hongshan Culture Site is about an hour and a half from the city. If you don’t drive, book a day car rental on Trip.com in advance. Don’t trust the “30 yuan to get there” offers from guys outside the station—they take detours and waste time. The UV rays in July are stronger than expected. Don’t skimp on hats and sun sleeves. Phoenix Mountain has many steps, so wear shoes with soft soles or your knees will hate you on the way down 👟. The “specialty shops” on the few ancient-style streets near Beita have inflated prices. If you want to buy aged vinegar and red dates, just go to a local supermarket—it’s half the price. Also, the 4D theater inside the Bird Fossil Park is fine for kids but adults can skip it. The ticket is expensive and the show lasts only five minutes. 🍜 Food recommendations Linyuan lamb soup is best in the morning. Pair it with freshly baked sesame flatbread torn into the soup. The broth is milky and rich without any gamey taste. This bowl basically fuels the morning spirit of Chaoyang locals 🐑. You have to try the donkey meat sandwich in Kazuo. Crispy bread filled with sauced donkey meat, plus a spoonful of garlic vinegar. Street stalls smell better than fancy restaurants. At the Daling River night market, grilled cold noodles with sausage and egg are a must. The owner’s hands move so fast you can’t keep up. For something more refined, look for local restaurants serving Chaoyang lecha (a thin bean flour pancake) with garlic sauce. Outsiders might be confused by the name at first, but one bite and it’s addictive 🌶️. The fruit highlight in July is Chaoyang red dates and watermelon. Street vendors sell by the pound and are much cheaper than in tourist areas. 🗺️ Itinerary Day 1: Arrive in Chaoyang by high-speed train in the morning. Store your luggage and head straight to Beita for a walk. Lunch with lamb soup and sesame flatbread. In the afternoon, take a taxi to the Bird Fossil Geopark for two hours of photos. Watch the sunset at Phoenix Mountain. End the day at the Daling River night market. Day 2: Early morning car rental to Niuhuliang. The “C-shaped jade dragon” of the Hongshan Culture was found here. The exhibition hall is small but the guide is engaging. Return to the city in the afternoon and pick up some aged vinegar and red dates on the way. Take the high-speed train back. If you want to add a day, Day 3 can be a slow-paced trip toward Kazuo with hot springs and donkey meat sandwiches ♨️. I usually check reviews on Trip.com before booking tickets and car rentals, especially for remote places like Niuhuliang. It’s really hard to get a ride last minute. Chaoyang isn’t a hot tourist city. Hotels in July are affordable, around 200 yuan per person for a comfortable stay. It’s perfect for those who want to avoid crowds and just enjoy some fresh air and a bowl of soup on the weekend. By the way, the C-shaped jade dragon in the Hongshan Culture exhibition hall is a replica. The original is in the National Museum, so don’t expect otherwise before you go~

Long-established restaurants offer authentic flavors and great value, with no tourist markups, full of local life and atmosphere. Three-day essential itinerary Day 1: Explore billion-year-old fossils and read the cultural heritage of the Three Yan ancient capital The first day focuses on ancient human origins, unlocking Chaoyang’s unique 10,000-year historical depth. In the morning, visit Chaoyang Bird Fossil National Geopark, a world-class paleontological treasure trove housing numerous dinosaur, ancient bird, and plant fossils. The exhibits are stunning and unique, fully restoring the ancient ecosystem from a billion years ago. It is both a popular science education site and a unique place to experience natural changes. In the afternoon, stroll through Murong Ancient Street and the Beita Museum. The ancient street replicates the architectural style of the Three Yan period, with blue bricks and old alleys full of historic charm. Hongshan and Three Yan cultural elements are visible everywhere, perfect for walking, photography, and soaking in the ancient capital’s atmosphere. The Beita houses millennium-old relics and national treasures. The ancient pagoda has weathered the ages, and the museum’s treasures witness Chaoyang’s thousand-year prosperity, offering an immersive understanding of Three Yan civilization and Liao dynasty heritage. In the evening, walk along the Daling River bank. The gentle evening breeze and quiet night views are soothing and healing. Day 2: Climb the famous frontier peak and immerse yourself in Zen mountain scenery On the second day, head to Chaoyang’s natural landmark, Phoenix Mountain. Known as a famous Buddhist mountain in northeast China, it is home to three pagodas, four temples, and Northern Wei cliff Buddha niches. Ancient temples stand among pine forests, with incense burning continuously for a thousand years. The mountain vegetation is lush, and the terrain is grand yet gentle. The hiking difficulty is moderate, with smooth stone steps along the way. You can admire cliff carvings, ancient pagodas, and serene temples. From the summit, enjoy panoramic views of the Daling River winding around the city and the entire Chaoyang cityscape. The mountains, rivers, and city blend beautifully, offering a vast and magnificent view. In the afternoon, take a forest walk to breathe fresh air, avoid crowds, and enjoy the mountain’s tranquility. Listen to the bell sounds and forest breeze to calm your mind. In the evening, descend and return to the city to visit the local night market and experience the lively atmosphere of a small western Liaoning town. Day 3: Trace the Hongshan civilization and conclude with rural mountain scenery On the last day, explore a lesser-known cultural secret by visiting the Niuhuliang Hongshan cultural site. This is a testament to China’s 5,000 years of civilization, with altars, stone tombs, and the goddess temple ruins standing quietly. The profound prehistoric cultural heritage is palpable. Walk through the site park to feel the wisdom of ancient ancestors and the weight of civilization. If time allows, visit a nearby off-the-beaten-path mountain area. The forest is quiet and lush, ideal for short hikes and relaxation. Afterward, explore local streets and markets to buy unique souvenirs and fully immerse yourself in the leisurely pace of a small western Liaoning town, bringing your trip to a perfect close. Authentic local cuisine Chaoyang cuisine is an excellent representation of western Liaoning frontier flavors. Chaoyang barbecue is famous, with unique tastes like grilled oil edges, grilled pigeons, and grilled silkworm pupae, crispy outside and tender inside, with a distinctive flavor. The special No. 6 sausage is firm and aromatic, a classic favorite on local tables. Kazuo mutton soup is milky white, fresh, and rich, perfectly paired with baked flatbread, warming and satisfying. Chaoyang bowl-shaped buckwheat noodles topped with sesame sauce and seasonings are smooth, chewy, and appetizing. Other specialties include prince pot, farmhouse stews, and dry-fried mixed mushrooms, with a balanced mix of meat and vegetables and rich flavors, fully showcasing western Liaoning’s local food culture. Each dish is worth savoring. Travel tips The fossil park and museum are closed on Mondays, so plan your visit accordingly to avoid wasted trips. Hiking Phoenix Mountain is gradual, and there are many mosquitoes, so prepare insect repellent in advance. The Hongshan cultural site covers a large area, so wear comfortable shoes and travel light. Keep quiet when visiting the ancient city streets to respect the millennium-old relics and cultural heritage. Weekdays see fewer visitors at major attractions, making sightseeing, photography, and touring more peaceful and comfortable. Ten thousand years of civilization settle here, a thousand years of Zen scenery remain. Chaoyang blends prehistoric secrets, Three Yan ancient charm, and western Liaoning’s mountains and rivers into one. Every scene holds the unique depth and warmth of western Liaoning’s land.

When traveling to Chifeng City in Inner Mongolia, the Hongshan Culture Museum is a must-visit. It represents the prehistoric human culture of eastern Inner Mongolia and is an important part of China’s prehistoric culture. It plays a significant role in understanding both Chinese history and the history and culture of the Chifeng area. Of course, this also helps us gain a deeper understanding of the city of Chifeng, making our trip more meaningful. [TeaDrinker] The Hongshan Culture Museum is located at the foot of Hongshan Mountain in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, at the southwest corner of the intersection of Hongshan Road and Hongqi Road. It is a modern specialized museum that integrates collection, research, exhibition, education, communication, and service. The entire museum building has a strong modern feel, combined with elements of Hongshan culture and the distant mountains, creating a grand, solemn, elegant, and meaningful architectural style. The museum has a basement level, a ground level, and a partial second floor. The main exhibition area is the permanent exhibition hall, which includes the foyer, dawn of civilization hall, treasures of Hongshan hall, respect for heaven and ancestors hall, diverse unity hall, glorious journey hall, and the final hall. There are seven sections in total, showcasing Hongshan culture comprehensively, from multiple angles and in three dimensions through text, artifacts, images, models, and multimedia. [Coke] Opening hours: 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM Closed every Monday. Overall evaluation: The museum’s artifact displays are somewhat simple, lacking heavyweight artifacts and representative pieces. For a deeper understanding of Hongshan culture, visiting the Niuheliang Site Museum in Chaoyang, Liaoning, is more recommended.

Phoenix Mountain tickets: free for locals, 60 yuan for visitors, shuttle bus 10 yuan one way 4. Some “folk experience centers” near Niuhuliang have poor value, better to skip 5. Large temperature difference between day and night, bring a light jacket and wear comfortable sneakers for walking 8. Parking near the North Tower is difficult, better to stay nearby and walk 🚄 Transportation tips · High-speed rail: direct trains from Beijing to Chaoyang station · Driving: about 2 hours from Shenyang via G1 highway · City transport: taxi starting fare 5 yuan, city is small and taxis are cheap · Tourist shuttle: Chaoyang station → Bird Fossil Park → Phoenix Mountain → North Tower Museum → Chaoyang Museum (loop route).
