They’re one of my favourite ways to cover long distances while saving a night of accommodation — and waking up somewhere completely new is such a fun experience. 🥹 🌙 Which routes can you take? Some of the main long-distance routes include: 🚂 Doğu Ekspresi — Ankara ↔ Kars 🏔️ Turistik Doğu Ekspresi — Ankara ↔ Kars, with longer sightseeing stops 🚂 Güney Kurtalan Ekspresi — Ankara ↔ Kurtalan 🌊 Vangölü Ekspresi — Ankara ↔ Tatvan 🚂 İzmir Mavi — Ankara ↔ İzmir 🚂 Konya Mavi — Konya ↔ İzmir There are also other long-distance mainline services, so it’s worth checking the current timetable before planning your route. 💡 Tip: If you want a sleeper/bed, don’t leave it until the last minute — these can be much more limited than ordinary seats. ⏰ ARRIVE EARLY! This is probably my BIGGEST tip. Even though it can sometimes be possible to board very close to departure, I would NOT recommend arriving only 5 minutes before your train leaves. 😅 Stations can be confusing, platforms can change, and you need time to find your carriage and berth. 👉 Aim for 30 minutes before departure, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the station. 🛏️ What should you expect? For overnight journeys, you may have options ranging from regular seats to compartments with beds, depending on the service. I decided to fly from Kars to Istanbul, and honestly, I don’t regret it at all. The flight saved me so much time compared to traveling by land, making the journey much more comfortable and convenient. One of my favorite parts was Kars Harakani Airport. The airport was surprisingly beautiful, and during winter, the snowy mountains surrounding it made the view even more breathtaking. Waiting for my flight while looking outside at the snow-covered landscape felt so peaceful. The flight itself was smooth and on time, and before I knew it, I had already arrived in Istanbul. If you’re traveling from Kars, I definitely recommend taking a flight. After enjoying cheese tastings at a local shop, our cave adventure in Kars City continued to a truly magical place: the Kars Peynir Müzesi (Kars Cheese Museum). As soon as I stepped inside, my expectations were completely shattered. This place is incredibly cool and not at all boring! The museum boasts unique architecture, resembling a giant underground tunnel with majestic natural stone walls. The atmosphere is dim and aesthetic, making us feel like we're entering a giant bunker that holds the world's best cheeses. At the main entrance, we were immediately challenged to complete exciting missions, from milking in the stable area to lifting a whole wheel of the super-heavy Kars Gravyer. The Secret Taste of Kars Cheese & Ancient Diorama I took a tour with a local guide who explained the history behind Kars cheese. There's one unique fact that amazed me: the cows on the Kars plateau apparently eat a local plant called Göle Sorjanı (Allium czelghauricum), a type of endemic onion plant that grows at altitudes of 2,000–3,000 meters. This natural reason is what gives their milk its distinctive floral aroma and produces a cheese flavor unmatched anywhere in the world! The museum also features life-sized dioramas depicting the ancient cheese-making process in incredible detail: Ancient Factory: Statues of traditional cheesemakers busily churning milk in giant copper vats. Maturation Room: Rows of giant cheese wheels neatly arranged on old wooden shelves with an ancient iron furnace in the center. Farmers' Village: A replica of a traditional barn (Ahır) complete with livestock mannequins and ancient tools like hayforks and milk containers. I also learned about Tuluh Cheese and Motal Cheese, unique local cheese varieties that are fermented in airtight sheepskin containers for months until they ripen perfectly. Personally, this museum has opened my eyes to the fact that cheese isn't just food, but a blend of cultural heritage, history, and natural science, fused into a work of culinary art. Despite the impressive history, today Kars is a small agricultural based town of about 80,000 people, making it the largest Turkish city on the border with Armenia. Kars is full things to see and to try, come here for 2-3 days and you will not regret it.😋 One of the city’s most famous landmarks is the imposing Kars Castle, which has stood for centuries and is a testament to the city’s rich history. Take a stroll through the historic streets of Kars and marvel at the beautiful Ottoman-era buildings that line the streets. Walk along the streets and you’ll notice there are reminders of the Russian occupation in town including the Fethiye Mosque. Yes, it’s got two pencil-thin minarets, but other than that, it looks very much like the Russian Orthodox church it once was. ⛪️ Try local cheese, and honey they are the specialty of this place, buy some of these good as a present for your family and go to have a goose for dinner at Pushkin restaurant by watching Caucasian dancers performance, it’s the must thing to do in Kars☝🏼 You can come to Kars by plane or by bus, but the most famous way to come here is by train from Ankara (It will take you 32 hours).🚂 #trip #Kars #turkey
