Short rides of 2–3 km are reasonably priced for groups of 3–4, they're often cheaper than the metro. 4. Book ryokans early. Especially in Kyoto and Hakone reserve 2–3 months ahead. Without a booking in high season, you'll end up in a business hotel. 5. Carry your trash with you. Let's be honest – the bamboo grove in Arashiyama looks magical on Instagram. Misty, mystical, almost empty. The reality? Thousands of tourists, selfie sticks everywhere, and queues just to take a photo. The main path takes about 10 minutes to walk, and you'll be surrounded by people the entire time🥹 Don't get me wrong – it's still beautiful. But it's not the peaceful escape you might imagine. So, is it worth it?🤔 Yes – if you go early. Arrive before 7 AM, and you'll have the path almost to yourself. The light filtering through the bamboo at sunrise is genuinely stunning 💚 No – if you go between 10 AM and 4 PM. You'll be fighting crowds, waiting for photo spots, and feeling rushed. What to see instead nearby: 🌿 Kodai-ji Temple – a smaller, quieter bamboo grove in Kyoto with far fewer people. You can actually hear the wind in the bamboo there. ⛩️ Fushimi Inari – the famous red torii gates. #photovsrealitytravel You’ve probably seen those photos of Fushimi Inari with endless orange torii gates and barely anyone around. Reality? The lower part can be VERY crowded. And that’s exactly where most people stay. My biggest tip: go in the morning and keep walking uphill. Fushimi Inari isn’t just the famous torii tunnel. The shrine extends up Mount Inari, and the full loop is around 4–5 km with a LOT of stairs. It takes roughly 2–3 hours if you do the whole hike. And here’s the good part: the higher you go, the fewer people you see. Most visitors turn around before reaching the upper part, so the atmosphere gets noticeably quieter as you climb. A few things I wish I knew: 🦊 Go early. The shrine is open 24/7, and early morning is by far the better option if you want to experience the torii without the crowds. 🥤 Bring your own water. There are vending machines along the way, but they become more limited — and more expensive — as you get higher. 👟 Wear proper walking shoes. It’s not just a quick walk through the torii. There are plenty of stairs, including some steeper sections. ⏰ Don’t underestimate the time. If you want to reach the top, explore the smaller shrines and stop for photos, give yourself a few hours. 🌿 Keep going after the famous section. The iconic Senbon Torii is only part of the route. Once you get higher, the trail becomes much more peaceful and forested. 📸 Don’t rush to get the “perfect” photo. The crowds are concentrated around the most famous sections. Sometimes walking another 10–20 minutes gets you a much quieter stretch of torii. ☕ Save the food and souvenir stops for later. There are shops and food options around the lower area and rest stops along the mountain, so you don’t need to carry everything with you. And one important expectation: the summit itself isn’t the reward for the view. The best panoramic view of Kyoto is around Yotsutsuji, before the actual summit. The reason to continue is the quieter trail, smaller shrines and the experience of walking through the mountain. So yes, the photos are real. You just have to walk past the crowd to find them. 🦊

Kyoto can get incredibly busy, especially around its famous temples, but I found some of my best moments by going a little farther. My first discovery was Otagi Nenbutsuji, tucked into the hills beyond Arashiyama. Its 1,200 stone Buddhist statues all have different expressions, and I honestly spent more time looking at their faces than taking photos. Then I visited Shisen do Jozan ji. The small garden was incredibly peaceful, with carefully shaped azaleas, moss, and the gentle sound of a bamboo water feature. This 40-year-old building has been beautifully renovated into a boutique hotel. The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is just such a place. 💚 When you step inside, walls of enormous bamboo literally rise around you. The trunks reach high into the sky, sunlight filters through them, and a path stretches through this incredible green tunnel. 🎋 And here you especially understand why Japan can't just be seen—it must be felt. 📍 WHERE IS IT? Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Kyoto The grove is located in the Arashiyama district, near Tenryu-ji Temple and the famous Togetsukyo Bridge. 🚆 HOW TO GET THERE FROM KYOTO? 🚄 By train is the fastest option From Kyoto Station, take the JR Sagano Line → Saga-Arashiyama Station. ⏱️ The journey takes about 11 minutes, then it's a 10-15-minute walk to the bamboo grove. 🚌 By bus You can get there: · Kyoto City Bus #28 → Arashiyama-Tenryuji-mae stop · Kyoto Bus #73 → Arashiyama stop The bus is convenient, but be aware of traffic jams—the journey can take significantly longer, especially during the day. 🚋 Another atmospheric option is the Randen bus Take to Arashiyama Station and then explore the area on foot. 💰 HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Entrance to the bamboo grove is FREE! 🎉 You don't need to buy a separate ticket to walk through the grove itself. ⏰ WHEN IS THE BEST WAY TO GO? This is really important! 👀 Arashiyama is one of the most popular places in Kyoto, and it gets very crowded during the day. 🌅 Therefore, the best option is to arrive early in the morning, around 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM. At this time, you have a much better chance of strolling through the grove, enjoying the silence, and taking photos without the huge crowds. It gets especially crowded on weekends, holidays, and during cherry blossom and fall foliage season. 🎋 MY ADVICE If you're in Kyoto, be sure to include Arashiyama on your itinerary. But arrive in the morning. Crimson Japanese maples and blazing amber foliage arched gracefully over the ancient shoreline, their brilliant leaves creating a striking, vibrant contrast against the dark timber framework and the glittering structure. Climbing the sacred slopes of Fushimi Inari Taisha during a late November afternoon, I found myself completely lost in a mesmerizing tunnel of vermilion and gold. While the thousands of vibrant orange torii gates winding up Mount Inari are iconic year-round, the arrival of autumn breathes a entirely different, enchanting soul into the ancient Shinto shrine. The crisp, invigorating mountain air carried the earthy scent of damp moss and falling leaves as I stepped away from the bustling crowds near the main entrance and ventured deeper into the quieter, forested trails. Towering Japanese maple trees arched gracefully over the stone pathways, their leaves transitioning into fiery shades of crimson, burnt orange, and deep amber that mirrored the bold red pigment of the sacred wooden arches. Every few steps, a shaft of golden late-afternoon sunlight would pierce through the dense canopy, illuminating the dew-kissed moss and casting dramatic, shifting shadows across the fox statues guarding the path. #fallcolors 🍁 Chasing Fall Colors Around Kyoto One of my favourite memories from Kyoto was simply walking around with no real agenda other than finding autumn colours. I visited in early December, and while the peak season had already passed in some places, Kyoto was still full of pockets of red maple leaves, golden trees and that unmistakable late-autumn atmosphere. The best part was that the colours weren’t confined to just the famous tourist attractions — they appeared everywhere, from temple gardens to quiet neighbourhood streets. I started around Arashiyama, where autumn and Kyoto’s traditional scenery almost feel made for each other. Around Tenryu-ji, the gardens were full of seasonal colours, while the streets around Saga-Toriimoto had a much quieter atmosphere away from the busiest parts of Arashiyama. Walking along Togetsukyo Bridge with the mountains changing colour in the background was another highlight. Then I made my way to Uji, which was one of my favourite places for a slower autumn day. Byodoin Temple was especially beautiful with the surrounding foliage reflected around the pond, and the walk along Uji River gave me plenty of little autumn views along the way. I also wandered around Byodoin Omotesando, stopping whenever I spotted something worth photographing — and of course, this is the place to take a matcha break too. Back in Kyoto, Kiyomizudera was another must-see. The combination of the wooden temple, Kyoto city views and layers of red and orange foliage around the hillside made it one of those places that really feels like autumn in Japan. The walk through Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka afterwards was just as enjoyable, especially when the traditional wooden buildings were framed by colourful maple trees. I also loved wandering around Yasaka Pagoda and Higashiyama, where you can easily spend hours without following a particular route. Streets like Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka and Nene-no-Michi are beautiful even without the foliage, but the autumn colours added another layer to the whole area. And then there were the quieter discoveries. Around Kennin-ji and the smaller temples and lanes in Higashiyama, I kept coming across little pockets of red leaves that weren't necessarily on my itinerary. Tenju-an at Nanzen-ji is another spot worth keeping in mind if you’re looking for seasonal colours without only following the most obvious Kyoto attractions. 🍂 A few tips for chasing autumn colours in Kyoto: 1. Early December can still work.
Peak foliage varies every year and differs between areas, so don’t automatically rule out early December. Higher elevations and some areas may peak earlier, while other parts of the city can still have beautiful colours. 2. Check foliage reports before deciding your route.
Instead of planning your entire itinerary months in advance around one “peak” date, check the latest updates closer to your trip and adjust your temple visits accordingly. 3. Go early for the famous spots.
Arashiyama and Kiyomizudera can become extremely busy. Early mornings are not only quieter, but the softer light also makes the autumn colours much nicer for photos. 4. Don’t only chase famous viewpoints.
Some of my favourite scenes came from simply walking between attractions. Kyoto’s smaller temples, residential streets and traditional neighbourhoods can have beautiful maple trees without the crowds. 5. Group places by area.
For example, you can combine Kiyomizudera with Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka, Yasaka Pagoda and Nene-no-Michi, while Arashiyama deserves its own half or full day. Uji also works nicely as a separate slower day. 6. Leave room for wandering.
This is probably my biggest tip. Don’t fill every hour with attractions. Give yourself time to walk, turn down random streets and stop whenever you see a beautiful tree. Some of the best autumn views are the ones you weren’t looking for. And don’t forget the little things — the sound of leaves under your feet, the crisp December air, warm drinks between walks and the contrast of bright red maple leaves against Kyoto’s old wooden buildings. Looking back, I don’t think I could pick just one “best” autumn spot. Arashiyama, Uji, Kiyomizudera and Higashiyama all had completely different moods, and that’s what made exploring Kyoto during fall so memorable. There's a convenience store right across the street! 🏪 Kyoto Tower and Yodobashi Camera are only 5 minutes away. Higashi Honganji Temple is within walking distance. Nearby are also Katsuyuki (fried beef steak) and Kurakura Izakaya (Japanese pub). Everything you need for eating, drinking, and entertainment is here! ✨ ♨️What I love most is the rooftop natural hot spring, "Oka no Yu." After walking 20,000 steps during the day, soaking in the hot spring at night was absolutely blissful! 💆♀️ I felt completely revitalized! 🍳The breakfast was absolutely amazing! If you’re in Kyoto, Kinkaku-ji is definitely worth adding to your itinerary. And even rain is no reason to cancel! ☔️ We arrived in overcast weather, but it only made the walk more atmospheric: the greenery was especially vibrant, the pond was calm, and there were few enough people that nothing interfered with enjoying the place and taking photos. ✨ WHAT TO SEE The main star is, of course, the Golden Pavilion, which stands right in the middle of a garden by the pond. But don’t rush to turn around and leave after the first photo. Along the route, there are: 🌿 Japanese garden and ponds 🌿 Uniquely shaped pines 🌿 Small water features and stone arrangements 🌿 Ancient buildings and a tea house 🌿 Anmintaku and a mysterious spot with a white snake 🪙 NOW THIS IS INTERESTING! Deep in the garden lies the White Snake Stupa (Hakujanotsuka)—a place associated with Benzaiten, the goddess of water and one of the Seven Lucky Gods. In front of it stands a stone bowl. And here, a little challenge begins: you have to throw a coin so that it lands in the bowl. Tradition says that if the coin goes in, Benzaiten will help fulfill your wish. That’s why you’ll see a whole field of coins around the bowl from those who missed just by a bit 😄🪙 We couldn't pass it by either, of course! ☔️ AND IF IT RAINS? Don’t cancel Kinkaku-ji. The grounds are large, there’s plenty of greenery, and the paths wind through the garden, so it’s very pleasant to walk even in rainy weather.
