Our driver on this trip to the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, Mr. Liu, is a young man with excellent driving skills. He handled various road conditions with ease. One day, we encountered a huge traffic jam on our way to Mangkang, and didn't arrive at our hotel until the early hours of the morning. Before going to Qamdo, my imagination of Tibet was limited to the Potala Palace in Lhasa and the waters of Namtso Lake. It wasn't until I stood by the thousand-year-old salt fields in Yanjing and watched the sunset dye the entire salt field a golden pink that I realized the beauty of Tibet goes far beyond those popular tourist spots. This hidden gem in eastern Tibet, Qamdo, gave me the most profound memories of this trip. The story starts with that winding mountain road It takes four or five hours of driving on mountain roads to get from downtown Qamdo to Yanjing. To be honest, I regretted it a bit at first—there were too many curves, which made me dizzy, and the whole way was just canyons. While the scenery was magnificent, I eventually got a bit tired of looking at it. But when the car crossed the last mountain pass and the Lancang River Canyon suddenly unfolded beneath my feet, I was instantly energized. The river surged at the bottom of the valley, and on the slopes of both banks, patches of white salt fields spread out like stairs, glistening in the sunlight. At that moment, I knew this trip was worth it. The right way to experience the salt fields The ancient salt fields of Yanjing have a history of over 1,300 years and are still using the most primitive methods to dry salt. The admission ticket costs a few dozen yuan, which is not expensive. I recommend going in at 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM. First, visit the Salt Field Museum to learn about the history and craft of salt drying, then head down to the salt fields to experience it firsthand. The salt on the west bank is white, while the salt on the east bank is pink, because the mineral content of the brine on the two banks is different—it's quite magical. I walked around the salt fields for over two hours. Narrow wooden boardwalks weave between the salt fields, with canyons dozens of meters deep right beneath my feet; my legs were actually a bit weak while walking. There were many local Tibetan women working in the salt fields, carrying wooden buckets to fetch water from the brine wells by the river, then pouring it into the salt fields bucket by bucket. Their movements were skillful, and they had peaceful smiles on their faces; they would generously wave when they saw me taking photos. I tried to help an elderly woman carry a wooden bucket and almost couldn't stand up; that bucket of water weighed at least 20–30 lbs. They have to carry it back and forth dozens of times every day—it's really not easy. The sunset is the soul of the salt fields If the salt fields are magnificent during the day, they are absolutely stunning at sunset. I found a high viewing platform to wait. Around 6:00 PM, the sun began to sink, and the light changed from blinding white to warm orange, and then to a dreamy pink. The color of the salt fields changed along with it; the white salt surfaces reflected the sky, turning from silvery white to golden yellow, and then to pinkish purple. The surface of the Lancang River was also covered with the evening glow, and the entire canyon looked like it had been set on fire. Waking up in the morning and opening the curtains to see the "golden mountain" illuminated by the sun was a breathtaking sight that words cannot describe.
