Mangkam Songtsen Rumai Resort is located in Mangkam County, Qamdo City, Tibet Autonomous Region. The guest rooms are very large and comfortable, the public areas are also much larger, and most importantly, the surrounding environment is very good, facing the Lancang River. This summer, the self-driving market completely exploded. Qunar data shows car rental bookings soared by nearly 60% year-on-year. A short video titled "Taking a taxi from Chongqing to Lhasa" garnered over 19 million likes, turning G318 into a national pilgrimage road IP. Ya'an Self-Driving Base Camp saw an 11.8% year-on-year increase in visitor traffic in the first half of the year, with license plates from all over crowding the camp—and I became one of them. 8 days, 2,140 kilometers, wheels rolling through four seasons I joined an 8-day small group tour. The route was classic but not rushed: Chengdu → Ya'an → Kangding → Xinduqiao → Yajiang → Litang → Batang → Markam → Zogang → Baxoi → Bomi → Nyingchi → Lhasa. The entire journey was about 2,140 kilometers, with an average of 5–6 hours of driving per day, leaving the rest of the time for contemplation and photography. D1-D2 Warm-up section: Crossing the Zheduo Mountain Pass (4,298m), prayer flags fluttered, and the wind was strong enough to blow people off balance. The light and shadow at dusk in Xinduqiao were truly stunning—the setting sun hitting the poplars, a scene of scattered gold, truly living up to its reputation as a "photographer's paradise." However, the team leader didn't let us stay in Xinduqiao, heading straight to Yajiang (2,530m) for the night—slow ascent and staying at a lower altitude ensures a good night's sleep. D3-D4 Entering Tibet section: The aerial view of the "Heavenly Road's 18 Bends" was comparable to a documentary. We had a cup of sweet tea in Litang Letong Ancient Town, and Sister Lakes looked like two blue tears embedded at the foot of the snow-capped mountains. After crossing the Jinsha River Bridge, my phone popped up with "Welcome to Tibet"—the sense of ritual was complete. The Dongda Mountain Pass (5,130m) was the highest point of the entire journey; the air was thin, and I was breathless after just a few steps, yet the scenery from inside the car was equally breathtaking. D5-D6 Legendary section: Nujiang 72 Bends, over 130 turns in 12 kilometers, with an altitude drop of 1,600 meters. I shifted to a low gear and used engine braking, my palms sweating from turning the steering wheel, yet I couldn't help but laugh out loud. The reflection in Ranwu Lake was so beautiful it left me speechless—the snow-capped mountains perfectly replicated on the water's surface, making it hard to distinguish reality from reflection. Bomi is known as "Tibet's Jiangnan," with a forest coverage rate of over 60%, and the oxygen content in the air instantly brought a sense of relief. D7-D8 Final section: Lulang stone pot chicken is a must-try, and the Tibetan pork hot plate sizzled with fat. From the Serkhym La Pass, we gazed at Namcha Barwa Peak—the "Shy Maiden Peak" is often shrouded in clouds, and seeing its full view depends entirely on luck. The Linla Expressway led directly to Lhasa, and the golden roof of the Potala Palace glowed in the sunset, making the 8-day journey completely worthwhile. High-altitude acclimatization: Slow is fast The biggest realization from this trip was that slow and gradual ascent is more important than anything else. The team leader's iron rule: stay in Yajiang, not Xinduqiao; stay in Batang, not Litang; and the daily increase in accommodation altitude should not exceed 500 meters. For the first two days, no showering, no alcohol, and drink plenty of warm water, allowing the body to adapt naturally. There were no severe discomforts throughout the trip, thanks to this pace control. Traveling during the rainy season: Depart early, ask for directions frequently July and August are the rainy season for the Sichuan-Tibet line. The section from Batang to Markam Haitonggou, the cliffside section of Jueba Mountain, and the section from Bomi to Tongmai are prone to landslides. We departed between 6–8 AM every morning to avoid the afternoon rain peaks and never rushed in the dark. The team leader would get out and ask locals about road conditions in every town, which was more reliable than navigation. If there was temporary traffic control, we adjusted flexibly. Allowing 1–2 days of buffer time is essential. Along the way, Sichuan restaurants were predominant. The Yajiang matsutake chicken soup was incredibly fresh, the Lulang stone pot chicken lived up to its reputation, and the Batang Tuanjie steamed buns had hearty fillings. For accommodation, we chose chain brands in low-altitude counties, which typically offer diffused oxygen supply and floor heating. During peak season, it's crucial to book rooms at least 15 days in advance. We passed through high-altitude spots like Litang and Zogang without stopping, returning to lower-altitude counties for the night. G318 is not just a road; it's a self-dialogue at altitudes ranging from 500 meters to 5,130 meters. 2,140 kilometers, 8 days and nights—what you cross is not a mountain pass, but your own limitations. When the wheels finally reach the foot of the Potala Palace, you will understand that "you must drive this in your lifetime" is not just a slogan, but a testament from those who have experienced it.

Slow-cooked until tender with rich broth, one bite warms your whole body. For snacks, visit a butter tsampa shop where you can eat your fill for about 20 CNY per person. The road from Deqin County to "Feilai Temple" was supposed to be the scenery and road I passed this way, but the road to "Feilai Temple" has been climbing sections and countless bends I saw many mountains and rivers, but mountains like Meili Snow Mountain really shocked me. Meili Snow Mountain is a huge group of snow mountains located in the junction of Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet provinces in China. Origin of the name: "Meri" is the Chinese translation of the Tibetan word "mainri", meaning medicinal mountain, named after its abundance of precious medicinal materials. The main peak, Kawagbo, means "white snow mountain" in Tibetan and is considered a "divine mountain" by local Tibetans.

· Over the years traveling to western Sichuan, I have visited different destinations and seen various styles of scenery. Not all glaciers are called Mingyong; it is a tear that Kawagebo shed on Earth. Starting from Feilai Temple, the window shows the turbulent winds of the Lancang River Grand Canyon. The navigation shows one hour left, but my heartbeat is already struggling to keep up with the altitude climb. Mingyong means "fire basin" in Tibetan—a warm name hidden at the foot of the glacier. 🚗 How to get there Charter a car from Deqin County or Feilai Temple, about a 1-hour drive. After crossing the Lancang River, there is a bumpy dirt road section, but the rest of the road is quite good. It is recommended to enter the park in the morning; in the afternoon, the glacier will be shaded by the mountain, losing much of its charm. 💰 Cost Entrance ticket 55 RMB + sightseeing bus 75 RMB (must buy, otherwise you have to walk 7-8 kilometers uphill). The 15-minute sightseeing bus ride is like a roller coaster, climbing several hundred meters straight to the hiking start point. If you want to ride a horse, it costs 160 RMB one way to Prince Temple and 210 RMB to Lotus Temple. 🥾 Hiking routes After getting off the electric car, follow the plank road or horse trail— ▫️ Prince Temple: altitude 2720 meters, about 1 hour hike. Prayer flags, temple, and glacier in one frame—this is the most photogenic spot on the route. ▫️ Three viewing platforms: 20 minutes past Prince Temple, offering close-up views of ice cracks and patterns. ▫️ Lotus Temple: altitude 3100 meters, about 40 minutes further. The widest view, with the imposing main peak looming overhead. The whole round trip takes about 5-6 hours, beginner level, much easier than hiking in Yubeng. ✨ Some impressions Standing in front of Prince Temple, the prayer flags flutter loudly in the plateau wind. The glacier looks like a giant dragon with silver scales and jade armor, winding from the top of Kawagebo Peak all the way down to the mountain foot, rushing straight to the Lancang River. Along the way, signs mark the glacier's position in different years—1965, 1985, 2005... The numbers get closer, but the glacier retreats farther. It retreats an inch, and spring advances an inch.
