Dreamlike Tibet must-visit spots
✅ Basic prerequisites: best time, altitude, ways to enter Tibet
Best seasons
· May–June, September–October (top choice): more sunny days, higher oxygen levels, mild altitude sickness, clear views, avoid summer crowds, moderate prices
· March–April: Nyingchi peach blossom season, stunning snowy peach blossoms; July–August rainy season, green but foggy, Nanga Parbat rarely visible, prices rise; November–February off-season, extremely cold, Namtso may freeze over
Altitude baseline (gradual acclimation, no sudden high-altitude rush)
Lhasa 3,650m | Nyingchi 2,900m (best buffer zone) | Yamdrok Lake 4,441m | Namtso 4,718m | Everest 5,200m (border permit required)
Ways to enter Tibet
1. Train (most recommended for beginners): Qinghai-Tibet line gradually ascends, allowing step-by-step altitude adaptation, with views of Hoh Xil and Tanggula Mountains; downside is long travel time
2. Plane: direct flight to Lhasa Gonggar, fast but lands at 3,650m, high altitude sickness risk, rest on arrival day without moving; alternatively, fly to Nyingchi (2,949m) first, then to Lhasa for a gentler approach
3. Local: prioritize official 4-person shared cars or private cars, avoid low-cost shopping tours; beginners should be cautious driving on Highway 318 due to complex road and altitude conditions
Required documents
· ID card = full access pass, keep it on you at all times, checked at checkpoints, accommodations, and tickets
· Border permit required for Everest, Ngari, and Motuo: free at local police station or apply online via immigration bureau app; not needed if only visiting Lhasa, Nyingchi, Yamdrok Lake, or Namtso
⚠️ Ironclad altitude sickness rules (most important! Don’t tough it out)
1. Before departure, avoid staying up late, catching a cold, or intense workouts; do not enter Tibet if still sick, as it increases risk of pulmonary edema
2. 24–48 hours before arriving in Lhasa: walk slowly, talk less, avoid running or jumping, no alcohol, no bathing or washing hair! Hot baths consume oxygen and easily trigger altitude sickness
3. Mild headache or fatigue: drink warm water, rest, take oral glucose; don’t immediately use oxygen (avoid dependency); if persistent vomiting, breathing difficulty, pulmonary edema, or confusion occur → descend immediately to lower altitude and seek medical help
4. Rhodiola only offers psychological comfort and limited prevention; prepare ibuprofen (for headache), glucose, portable oxygen, stomach medicine, and motion sickness medicine
🗓️ 7-day classic beginner golden loop (no backtracking, altitude-friendly, includes culture and scenery)
Day 1 | Arrive in Lhasa → rest and acclimate (altitude 3,650m)
· Check in to oxygen-supplied hotel (best near Barkhor Street/Dajokhang Temple), no sightseeing planned, no bathing, mainly rest lying down
· Evening: leisurely walk around Potala Square, take photos of the 50 RMB perspective at Medicine King Hill, stroll around Barkhor Street perimeter clockwise, visit Guangming Sweet Tea House for sweet tea, then return to hotel; walk clockwise around prayer wheels, no counterclockwise
Day 2 | Lhasa cultural depth · core of faith
· Morning: Potala Palace (must book 7 days in advance via official app! Sold out quickly in peak season); wear long sleeves and pants, no photos inside, no hats, don’t step on thresholds; climb stairs slowly, rest as needed
· Afternoon: Jokhang Temple (85 RMB) → clockwise around Barkhor Street, watch debate at Sera Monastery at 3:00 PM; try Tibetan cuisine, noodles, and butter tea
· Evening: optional Princess Wencheng live show (bring warm clothes, cold at night)
Day 3 | Lhasa → Nyingchi (low altitude buffer, 2,900m, key day to prevent altitude sickness)
· Take Lalin Expressway via Mila Pass; visit Basongcuo Lake (emerald snow mountain lake with island), light hiking, easy and relaxing
· Overnight in Bayi Town, Nyingchi, most comfortable sleep, lowest altitude, rest well
Day 4 | Nyingchi: Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon + Nanga Parbat golden sunlight
· Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon; Sosong Village facing Nanga Parbat peak; wait for golden sunlight on clear evenings; stunning peach blossoms in spring and colorful forests in autumn
· Dinner: Lulang stone pot chicken (matsutake mushroom native chicken, signature dish); stay in Sosong Village or Nyingchi
Day 5 | Nyingchi → Lhasa → Yamdrok Lake day trip
· Return trip with views of Niyang River; Gangbala Pass (4,998m), overlook Yamdrok Lake — sapphire blue sacred lake, one of the three holy lakes; check in at viewing platform, no running or jumping; ask price before taking photos with yaks or Tibetan mastiffs by the lake to avoid price hikes
· Return to Lhasa same day, no overnight at high-altitude lake
Day 6 | Lhasa → Namtso (caution, 4,718m)
· About 4 hours one way, long drive, strong winds, extreme temperature differences; main scenic area is Zhaxi Peninsula; day trip only! Do not stay overnight at Namtso due to high altitude sickness risk, stay in Damxung instead; see Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains and sacred lake; bring windproof warm clothes, sunglasses, and hat
· ✅ Alternative: if worried about fatigue or altitude sickness, rest in Lhasa this day, visit Tibet Museum, stroll slowly, don’t rush to Namtso
Day 7 | Lhasa wrap-up · return trip
· Sleep in naturally, buy souvenirs, relax before departure; avoid strenuous exercise and catching a cold before leaving
Condensed 5-day version (tight schedule)
Day 1 rest in Lhasa; Day 2 Potala Palace + Jokhang Temple in Lhasa; Day 3 Lhasa → Nyingchi Basongcuo; Day 4 Nyingchi Grand Canyon → return to Lhasa; Day 5 Yamdrok Lake day trip, return
Advanced 8-day Everest trip (with border area)
Based on 7-day plan: add Shigatse → Karola Glacier → Tashilhunpo Monastery → Everest Base Camp (108 bends, golden sunlight); border permit required in advance, higher altitude, more challenging, suitable for experienced travelers
🧥 Clothing and essentials checklist (layered dressing, four seasons in one day)
· Layers: shell jacket/light down + fleece + long-sleeve T-shirt + long pants; big temperature difference day and night, below freezing at night, teens of degrees during day; non-slip hiking shoes, warm socks
· Sun protection: SPF 50+, sunglasses, sun hat, lip balm (strong UV, sunburn in half a day)
· Others: thermos, small amount of cash (poor signal in remote areas), power bank, moisturizer, common medicines
❌ Pitfall red lines, avoid!
1. Book Potala Palace tickets 7 days in advance officially, don’t buy from scalpers at higher prices; low-cost shopping tours for a few hundred yuan are all forced shopping stops, don’t join, choose pure sightseeing small groups
2. Temple taboos: no short skirts or shorts, no hats, don’t step on thresholds, no photos inside, walk clockwise around prayer wheels, ask permission before photographing Tibetans
3. Namtso, Yamdrok Lake, Everest are very cold and windy, don’t wear too little for looks; when riding horses or yaks by the lake, agree on price first to avoid price gouging
4. Don’t trust drivers or roadside sellers recommending souvenirs, silverware, amber, or expensive Tibetan incense; prices are inflated; buy from official stores in Lhasa
5. Ngari, no-man’s land, and Sacred Elephant Gate have poor roads, very high altitude, and bad signal; beginners should skip these on first trip and save for a deeper visit next time
