Traveling with kids in summer vacation: this destination is truly worry-free
Traveling with kids in July means choosing the right city is more important than choosing the right hotel. While most people flock to the beach to see the crowds, several small inland cities offer cool, relaxed, and low-effort experiences. Within a 2- to 4-hour high-speed train ride, you can switch to a different pace. From night boat rides to mountain retreats, cultural immersion to wild adventures, these destinations each have their own “effort-saving secrets” — avoiding crowds so you can enjoy a vacation with kids even in July.
01 Liuzhou | Guangxi
Many don’t realize that Liuzhou in July is more kid-friendly than expected. It’s hot during the day but not stuffy, and the evening breeze along the Liu River feels like natural air conditioning.
⏰ At 5:30 PM, take the kids for a walk by the Liu River, where locals often stroll with their children. The river is wide, and you can rent a small boat for a half-hour ride. Kids can play barefoot in the water and sand while adults relax on the shore chatting. The pace feels more like a local outing than tourism.
🍜 For dinner, try an established luosifen (snail rice noodle) shop near Wuxing Street. Ask for mild spice so kids can enjoy it too. But ⚠️ don’t go too late; some shops close by 8:30 PM. The next day, visit Chengyang Baza, about 1.5 hours by car. The village’s stone paths are smooth and stroller-friendly. See the wind and rain bridge, touch the drum tower, and learn a few Dong phrases. Kids stay curious the whole time, and adults don’t have to carry or chase them — a truly low-effort trip.
02 Chengde | Hebei
Chengde’s Mountain Resort is the main reason to visit in July for its coolness. The resort has wide lakes and dense shade, with pavilions every few steps to rest.
📍 Enter through Lizheng Gate and explore the palace area first. If kids are interested in the emperor’s Golden Throne Hall and the “summer retreat” story, you can explain as you walk. It takes about half an hour to reach the lakeside.
⚠️ Some mountain areas have many stairs, so skip those with kids and spend time on the flat lakeside trail and Wenjin Pavilion, where kids can run freely.
🚄 For a longer outing, Jinshanling Great Wall is more family-friendly. The western section has gentle slopes, and you can reach the first watchtower in half an hour. The views are spectacular with little physical strain. Remember to bring enough water as there are no supply points on the mountain.
🍜 In the evening, head back to the city and try “Lao Dingjia” mutton soup on Old Chengde Street. The mutton soup with baked flatbread is mild enough for kids to have half a bowl. The overall pace is relaxed, making it a safe choice for summer trips with elders and children.
03 Xi’an | Shaanxi
Xi’an is hot in July, but the history museum and Terracotta Warriors are indoors with strong air conditioning, so kids stay comfortable.
⏰ Visit the history museum at 9 AM, booking a day in advance. Weekdays are half as crowded. The museum’s treasures, like Tang dynasty tri-colored glazed camels and bronze artifacts, can captivate kids for a long time.
⚠️ Closed on Mondays, so don’t go then. In the afternoon, visit the Terracotta Warriors. Hiring an official guide is recommended, as kids get fascinated by stories like “were the warriors made from real people?”
📍 In the evening, go to the Xi’an city wall. Enter at Yongning Gate and rent a tandem bike with the child in front. Ride for 30 minutes to Changle Gate, enjoying the evening breeze and city wall lights. If you don’t bike, walking is fine. Grass grows between the bricks, and the sunset casts long shadows, perfect for photos. For dinner, avoid the crowded stalls on the main street and go to “Ma Feng Stir-fry” near the west entrance of Muslim Quarter. Their sour plum juice and lamb stew with bread are kid-friendly.
04 Quzhou | Zhejiang
Quzhou is one of the few cities in Zhejiang where you can comfortably stroll in July. The Gen Palace Buddhist culture center is fully indoors with strong air conditioning and impressive visuals.
📍 Upon entering, you’ll be amazed by walls full of root-carved Buddha statues. Kids will point at the oddly shaped roots asking, “Is that an elephant?” The park is small and can be toured in 1.5 hours. Rest at the hotel for a nap afterward. In the afternoon, visit Jianglang Mountain, but ⚠️ don’t climb the main peak as the stairs are long and steep. Instead, explore the ancient town of Nianbadu at the mountain’s base. It has stone-paved streets and streams on both sides where kids can splash. The town features an old barbershop and a traditional theater stage, perfect for relaxed sightseeing and snacking.
🍜 Try a local steamed rice cake with a bowl of cold jelly noodles for a refreshing afternoon. Quzhou station to Kaihua takes about an hour by taxi. Stay in a budget hotel in Kaihua town, where you can enjoy an evening walk by the river.
05 Jingzhou | Hubei
Jingzhou is a “hidden gem that’s super low-effort for families.” The ancient city wall is half the height of Xi’an’s and has gentle slopes, so kids can climb it on their own.
📍 Enter from the new east gate and walk to the old south gate. Along the way, you’ll see the moat, weeping willows, and crape myrtle flowers growing between the wall bricks.
⚠️ Don’t walk the full circle; the 1.5 km stretch from south to east gate is the highlight. In the afternoon, visit the Jingzhou lantern folk area, where lanterns are shaped like animals. Kids will run around nonstop.
🍜 For dinner, try “Zhu Ji” fish cake shop on Zhang Juzheng Street. The fish cakes are not fishy, and kids can eat a big piece.
🚄 It’s only a 15-minute taxi ride from Jingzhou station to the ancient city. The whole city moves at a slow pace like it’s on pause, so adults can truly relax while traveling with kids.
06 Linyi | Shandong
Linyi’s highlight is its “wild charm” without being tiring. The Firefly Water Cave and Underground Grand Canyon tourist area is an indoor cave with a constant 18°C temperature, so bring a jacket in July.
📍 Inside the cave, you travel by boat along an underground river. Kids can see stalactites and underground waterfalls while fireflies twinkle in the dark cave ceiling like stars.
⚠️ Bring a jacket as there’s a misty area that can dampen clothes. In the afternoon, visit Yimeng Mountain but avoid climbing the main peak. Instead, walk the gentle slopes of the Pingyi Guimeng Scenic Area trail at the mountain’s base. Kids can walk on their own and may spot monkeys and squirrels.
🍜 For dinner, try “Linyi fried chicken” in the city. Ask for the mild spicy version so kids can enjoy it with pancakes and have two bowls. Stay in Lanshan district for convenient access everywhere.
07 Kashgar | Xinjiang
Kashgar is very family-friendly — the old city’s alleys are narrow and car-free, so kids can run freely.
📍 Enter the old city from the east gate in the morning and visit the “century-old teahouse” to watch an elderly man play the rawap. Kids will be drawn to the music. Then walk to the Id Kah Mosque square, where you can feed pigeons. In the afternoon, hire a car to visit the Pamir Plateau. ⚠️ Don’t climb the Stone City; just picnic at the foot of Muztagh Ata, which is 3,300 meters high. If kids don’t have altitude sickness, spread a blanket and enjoy the snow-capped mountain view.
📸 Kashgar moves at a slow pace, and locals are very kind to children, often giving them naan bread on the street. Stay in a guesthouse inside the old city for a quiet night. Remember to apply plenty of sunscreen for kids as UV rays are strong.
08 Nanjing | Jiangsu
Nanjing is hot in July but cools down in the evening, and many indoor attractions keep both adults and kids comfortable.
⏰ Visit the Presidential Palace at 4 PM. The garden is shaded with green trees and flowing water. Kids will enjoy seeing the old desks and vintage telephones.
⚠️ Closed on Mondays, so don’t go then. At 6 PM, visit the Confucius Temple and Qinhuai River scenic area. The lights just come on, and the crowds are still light. Take a boat ride on the Qinhuai River, where kids will be fascinated by the colorful lights and storytelling.
📍 After getting off the boat, stop by “Lianhu Pastry Shop” for a bowl of red bean dumplings and water chestnut cake, satisfying for both adults and kids.
The next morning, visit Niushou Mountain. Take the shuttle bus to the top and see the Buddha Palace without climbing any stairs. Kids will be amazed by the Thousand Buddha Hall dome. At 2 PM, rent a pedal boat on Xuanwu Lake. The lake is wide, and kids can pedal while adults steer, enjoying a leisurely hour. Avoid midday heat for a comfortable, fatigue-free experience.
Traveling with kids in July can actually be very relaxed. Pick a city, stay for two or three days at a slow pace, avoid rushing and long lines, and still have energy to read picture books with your kids at night.
