About 70% of it was covered by construction work, so tourists were not allowed inside due to the service, which was a shame, but it was larger and more impressive than I had imagined, and it was worth going just to see it. The stairs were also higher than I thought, so if I had had the time, I would have liked to sit and just stare into space. We waited until Uspenski Cathedral opened at 1pm before we were able to enter. Both the exterior and interior were beautiful. It is located on a hill and can be seen from the Market Square, making it a very impressive sight. I planned this because Finland was the first country I represented in Model United Nations in high school, so I had to check it out. I flew from New York for 7.5 hours and arrived at 2:00 PM. Immigration was super smooth. Border control asked a few questions about where I was going and how long I would stay, and then let me through. They didn't check any documents at all, and it wasn't as strict as the internet said. I took the P train to Central Station in half an hour. I bought a 4.20 euro A/B zone ticket, valid for 90 minutes. You can buy it on the HSL app or on the train. I rode it three times without encountering a ticket inspector. 🚄 I entered the city at 3:00 PM and started walking the city. It was incredibly hot. I first visited the Sibelius Monument. It's so remote, I felt like I'd just been there. Back in the city center, I checked the White Church and the Red Church. At 5:15 PM, I sat on the beach. I had booked a 6:30 PM boat tour, but since there wasn't much to see, I decided to eat at the nearby Finlanda Caviar Oyster House. They have a 34 Euro tasting menu featuring all French oysters, including a 6 Euro Girardot No. 3. Sure enough, there are more European oysters than American ones! You can even pay with WeChat! After eating, I went on a boat across the street. I realized that Helsinki still looks better from the sea, but it's not so good in the summer because the White Church is under renovation and you can't see the whole thing. 😭 The second time I went was during a layover, specifically for the Vietnamese pho I missed last time. The broth was amazing! We also went to the Central Market, but both times I felt the same—Helsinki is just too "rustic." It was my least favorite city on this trip, and I probably won't be back.
