The city itself is small enough that it’s easy to travel around. Alongside the beach is a boardwalk with a nice theme park and some small shops and cafe/restaurants. Away from the coast is the famous gas lamp quarter full of great bars and restaurants. The San Diego Zoo is one of the most famous zoos in the world featuring pandas and other animals which hard to see in other countries. If you’re feeling adventurous then you can also do a day trip to Mexico and visit the city of Tijuana which lies close to the border. Day Bay Area—＞Los Angeles Stayed in Monterey Park, a Chinese neighborhood where several new hotels have opened, offering good value and convenient Chinese dining. Dinner was at Jin Cheng Li, not too spicy, still high quality, and much cheaper than similar Chinese restaurants in the Bay Area. Day Los Angeles—＞SeaWorld San Diego, left early and drove less than two hours. The holiday season SeaWorld is open until 8 PM, giving plenty of time to enjoy the whole park. Four of us bought four half-price all day dining passes, $30 each, allowing a meal every 90 minutes. There was quite a wait to get food, so if you want to save time, send one person to pick up the meals. Some portions were quite large; actually, three passes for four people would have been enough. Day Safari Park, opens at 9 AM on Monday, we arrived at 9:20 and got a good parking spot. Walked straight to the African Tram to take the train, waited for half a round before boarding. When we got off, the line was even longer. It was a bit of a pity that the cheetah race was not scheduled that day. After the African Loop, we saw elephants and tigers, then quickly toured the rest because the kids were not feeling well. Day San Diego—＞Bay Area, before leaving, we stopped by USS Midway Park to check out the battleship, which felt great for kids, especially boys. Had a meal in LA on the way. Left at 9 AM and got home at 8:30 PM. It was definitely a challenge; probably won’t do that again next time.

Dating back to 1915, Balboa Park was specifically designated as a green space within the city's planning. After years of planning by successive mayors and designers, the park now boasts over a dozen museums and galleries, as well as cafes, walking trails, and performance venues, creating a vibrant interplay of culture and nature. A quarter of the park's area is occupied by the renowned San Diego Zoo (which I missed this time, but will have to make up for next time 🐼). This time, we visited several unique museums. Our family trip to California would not have been complete without a day spent at San Diego Zoo - in our opinion, one of the best zoos in the world! We arrived at 9am for opening and took the Sky Train across the massive park to the other side taking in the beautiful views of Balboa Park on the way. Winding our way through the exhibits which showed animals in a way that we felt closer than we had been at the safari park, we spent 9 hours here taking in the views and learning about wildlife and their conservation projects. We ate at the Hua Mei Cafe which served massive portions of delicious oriental style fast food and got a souvenir refillable cup to share through the day to save money.

Same goes for the aerial tramway. My favourite animals to watch were the elephants, chimpanzee, koala etc. This place is great for a family outing. Quick tip: Make sure tou wear comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking involved.
