💰 HOW MUCH A MONTH OF LIVING IN DA NANG REALLY COSTS (A FAMILY OF 3)
One of the most frequent questions we get asked is: "How much money do you need to live in Vietnam?" I'll tell you honestly, from our own example, without embellishing and without playing it down. We're a family of three, we live in Da Nang, and here's our real budget item by item.
Let me say the main thing right away: Da Nang really is cheap, and not just by European standards but by Asian ones too. Yes, locals and old-timers often sigh that "it used to be far cheaper." Maybe so, but even now it's a very budget-friendly place for a comfortable life, and we've got something to compare it with. Let's get to the numbers.
📊 Our monthly budget
🔹 Rent for a good two-bedroom apartment in a decent residential complex — $700
🔹 Utilities — $100
🔹 Food, if you cook at home, without restaurants and deliveries — $600
🔹 Entertainment — $100
🔹 Taxis (we go somewhere every day) — $100
🔹 Other expenses — $100
If you live this way, calmly, comfortably, but without daily restaurants, the basic needs of a family of three are covered for about $1,700-2,000 a month.
🍽️ And if you add restaurants and delivery
Here mainly one item grows, food. If you don't cook at home but actively order delivery and go to cafes and restaurants, food rises from $600 to around $1,000.
So with a restaurant lifestyle the family budget comes closer to $2,400 a month. And that's still, mind you, for a very decent standard of living.
✨ What's important to understand about this level
A key point people often miss. This money here isn't "survival" but a comfortable life. Good housing in a decent complex, quality groceries, a daily taxi instead of a motorbike, entertainment for the child, cafes. We don't really deny ourselves anything, and still we fit within these sums. So if a family needs to tighten their belt and is willing to accept less comfortable conditions, you can easily stay within $1,300. That, though, is more of a survival mode.
In Europe, or even in many other Asian countries, you'd have to pay noticeably more for the same level.
🇲🇪 For comparison, our Montenegro experience
So there's something to compare it with: before Vietnam we lived in Montenegro for a year. There, with a similar lifestyle, we spent around $4,500 a month. The difference with Da Nang is more than twofold, for a comparable, and in places even less convenient, way of life. In other words, our standard of living in Vietnam now is higher than it was in Montenegro, while the expenses there were twice as high.
That's why for many people Vietnam becomes not just a dot on the map but a conscious choice: here you really can live comfortably without going broke.
💭 The verdict
In short, a family of 3 can live very well in Da Nang in the range of $1,700-2,000 a month, depending on whether you cook at home or live by restaurants. For this quality of life, that's excellent money in my view.
Of course, you can live noticeably cheaper if you save on housing and taxis, and noticeably more expensively if you want premium in everything. But this is our real, honest benchmark.
