A lot of people think Europe is always expensive, but after visiting a few countries, I realized that’s not entirely true. If you plan your trip well, there are places where you can enjoy beautiful cities, great food, and amazing scenery without spending a fortune. Here are three countries that genuinely surprised me. 🇵🇱 Poland Poland was much more enjoyable than I expected. Cities like Kraków and Warsaw are beautiful, full of history, and much more affordable than many popular destinations in Western Europe. One thing I loved was how far my budget could go. Hotels were reasonably priced, local restaurants served generous portions for a great price, and getting around by train or public transport was easy. If you’re looking for a European destination that feels authentic without draining your wallet, Poland is an easy recommendation. 🇭🇺 Hungary Budapest quickly became one of my favorite cities in Europe. Walking along the Danube at night with the Parliament building lit up is something I’ll never forget. The city has a premium feel, but surprisingly, daily expenses are still quite reasonable. From thermal baths to historic cafés and scenic viewpoints, there’s plenty to do without spending a lot. It feels like a luxury destination that doesn’t come with a luxury price tag. 🇷🇴 Romania Romania doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves. I was impressed by how diverse it is from charming old towns like Brașov to the famous castles and the beautiful mountain scenery. Accommodation, transportation, and food are all very budget friendly, making it one of the best-value countries in Europe. Come Visit Romania Have you ever been to Romania? If not you should, in fact everybody should, simply because it’s really beautiful and you can see a lot of things, like the castle Dracula lived in, the Black Sea where pirates used to hunt down every ship that passed by. Romania has a lot of cool places to visit, but in my opinion the most beautiful of them all are the parks of Bucharest, the capital city on a hot summer day. Why is that you might wonder, well let me tell you that Romania has the most beautiful girls you have ever seen, and in the summer they all go out in parks to hang around. It’s like a paradise on earth, you will be amazed and dazzled by the variety and beauty of them. If you are a girl, let me tell you that the boys are worth while too ;) Other absolutely magnificent places to visit are the Romanian beaches, i’m telling you that you won’t find anything like them anywhere else. The sand is delicate, the sea is hot and not very salty and the beaches are full with people. Some places are so peaceful that you don’t want to leave. Luna Chalet in Porumbacu de Sus is one of them. Nestled in the heart of the Făgăraș Mountains, it’s the perfect base for exploring some of Romania’s most spectacular attractions: 📍 Transfăgărășan – one of the world’s most scenic mountain roads, famous for its breathtaking hairpin bends and panoramic views. 🏔️ Bâlea Lake – a stunning glacial lake surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks. 🌊 Vidraru Dam – one of Romania’s most impressive dams, offering spectacular views over the reservoir. 🏰 Curtea de Argeș Monastery – one of Romania’s most beautiful and historic monasteries, renowned for its unique architecture and fascinating legends. 🧚 Clay Castle of the Valley Fairies – a fairytale-inspired attraction that looks like something straight out of a storybook. We visited in October 2025 and were lucky enough to experience the first snowfall of the season. The chalet itself was just as magical. Completely private and surrounded by nature, it has a cosy cabin feel, a fully equipped kitchen, a beautiful outdoor hot tub, and the relaxing sound of the nearby river flowing past the property. 🐶 One of our favourite surprises was the resident dog (Luna), who wandered over to welcome us on our first evening. He was incredibly gentle and friendly and somehow made the stay feel even more special. 📍 Where to stay: Luna Chalet – Porumbacu de Sus (Sibiu County) The cabin has two bedrooms with two double beds. The chalet can be booked through Booking.com or directly via their Instagram page @luna_chalet_porumbacu. We found it to be excellent value for money considering the privacy, location and facilities. Prices vary depending on the time of the year. #arrivalguide stayed one night in Durău (basic but fine, ~200 lei room), started at the park office opposite the resort at 7:30 a.m. on the red-cross trail (Traseul 5) to Dochia Cabin, then continued to Ocolișul Mare (1,901 m) and the rock chapel formations—Piatra Ciobanului, Toaca, Dochia’s “Holy Rocks.” Distance Durău–Dochia is 7.5 km, ~1,240 m gain, 4.5–5 h up; adding Ocoliș loop and back makes it 9–10 h day. I turned at Dochia Cabin (1,760 m) for time, but pushed to the Ocoliș ridge for the panorama—worth it. Trail is medium: switchbacks through beech, then the Duruitoarea waterfall (25 m, loud) at midpoint is the last water source—fill up. Above tree line it’s juniper and scree; Toaca’s pyramid dominates. Dochia Cabin takes card for tea and mamaliga, dorm bed ~60 lei, but book ahead. No entry fee for the mountain itself; the resort parking is free. Mistakes I saw: people in sneakers slipping on the waterfall stairs (wear grippy soles), and folks starting at 10 a.m. then racing the 6 p.m. cabin closure light. Ceahlău is nicknamed “Romanian Olympus” and gets afternoon storms in July—I was hit by rain at Toaca at 3 p.m., descended in fog, lost the red cross twice, rescued by a local with a GPS beacon. Carry 2 L, a whistle, and a real paper map (the park sells one at Durău office). Best light: sunrise from Ocoliș on Toaca’s east face. Avoid winter unless roped—ice on the waterfall section kills people.

#arrivalguide I drove the Transfăgărășan in early July, starting from Sibiu, sleeping in Cârțișoara the night before, and reaching Bâlea Lake (2,034 m) around 8:30 AM before the tour buses arrived. The highway (DN7C) is only open roughly late June to late October depending on snow, and there is no toll, but you pay in fuel, nerves, and warm layers. I took the northern approach from Cârțișoara because the hairpin sequence on that side is the iconic shot everyone photographs — the southern descent through the Bâlea Tunnel toward Vidraru Dam is gorgeous too, but the drama is on the north. Practical stuff nobody tells you: even when it is 31°C in Sibiu, Bâlea sits at 2,034 m and can be 12–15°C cooler with wind that cuts through a hoodie. I wore trail runners, a merino base layer, a wind shell, and still bought a coffee at the Bâlea Chalet to thaw my hands. The chalet takes cards but the small roadside stalls selling kürtőskalács and grilled corn often want cash in lei, so keep 100–150 RON in small notes. Parking at the lake fills by 10 AM on weekends. If you arrive later, park at Bâlea Waterfall lower station and take the cable car up (roughly 65 RON round trip in summer, runs ~9–17, pauses in high wind). The cable car is also your only winter access when the road is closed. The walk I actually came for is the short loop around the glacial cirque: lakeshore path to the moraine rim, then a 45-minute climb toward Capra Lake viewpoint for the classic shot back over Bâlea with the Făgăraș ridge (Moldoveanu, Negoiu) behind it. Boots with grip matter — the rim is scree and the weather flips fast. I saw blue sky at 8 AM and a sleet gust at noon. Do not swim; the water stays under 10°C and it is a protected glacial lake.
