We stepped into a real-life fairy tale in County Kerry. The experience: · 30 acres of parkland – wandering the grounds felt like stepping back in time 🌳 · Stunning architecture – Gothic Revival style with turrets, battlements, and that unmistakable old-world charm · The warmest welcome – Irish hospitality at its finest. The staff made us feel like royalty 👑 · Irish Wolfhounds roaming the grounds – gentle giants that add to the castle's character 🐾 · Elegant rooms – spacious, comfortable, and full of period character The food: Breakfast served in a stunning room. Evening meals? Superb — five courses of delicious Irish fare . You'll want to linger over every bite 🍽️ What makes it special: This isn't just a place to sleep — it's an experience. The castle has even won national awards for its excellence as a wedding venue and heritage hotel . Whether you're staying overnight or just stopping by, the magic is unmistakable ✨ 💡 Tips: · Located just outside Tralee, County Kerry — perfect for Ring of Kerry explorers · Book a suite in the castle itself for the full experience · Don't miss the grounds — they're beautiful for a stroll · If you're lucky, you might meet the resident Irish Wolfhounds! ⭐ Final Verdict: 5/5 Ballyseede Castle is pure Irish magic — history, hospitality, and beauty rolled into one unforgettable stay. #worthitornot I hired a car in Dingle town (€55/day, card, manual shift) and drove the Slea Head Loop clockwise: Dingle → Ventry → Dunmore Head → Slea Head → Ballyferriter → Dingle, 47 km, 3 hours with stops. The stone-wall lanes are single-track with grass verges; sheep own the road, slow down or you’ll clip a ram (I didn’t, but the hire guy warned me). Slea Head viewpoint (free, layby for 6 cars) faces Blasket Islands—ruined village on Great Blasket visible across the sound. Dunmore Head is a 10-min walk from its own car park to a cliff where the Atlantic hits 200 m walls; no fence, wind lateral. The whole loop is signed Wild Atlantic Way blue route markers, free, no toll. Mistakes: I drove it counterclockwise once against the recommended flow and met tour buses nose-to-nose at a blind bend—clockwise is the local rule. Another: I skipped the Dingle–Tralee bus option; if you don’t drive, the 909 bus does parts but not the full loop off-season. Payment: Dingle town takes card, rural craft stalls often cash—carry €20. Food: Ventry pub chowder €9, card. Worth it? Yes—47 km of walled fields dropping into surf is the Atlantic edge at its most human-scaled; better than Ring of Kerry’s busier mirror. But if you only have 90 min, drive straight to Slea Head and back. Discussion: is a full peninsular loop more truthful than ticking one headland, or does the driving just pad a single good view?

Tralee is a small but perfectly formed town with a lovely central town park, lots of restaurant options, good travel connections on to Dublin and to the rest of County Kerry and friendly locals to boot. The Grand Hotel is a great spot to stay & there are plenty of local walking trails that are easy to get to on foot with beautiful views of the mountains and local flora and fauna

#mytraveldiary Ambience & Setting Tralee Bay Wetlands, on the edge of Tralee in County Kerry, is where freshwater meets salt, reedbeds ripple in the breeze, and wildlife thrives in marshes, ponds, and channels. The backdrop includes the Slieve Mish Mountains, the wide skies and the shifting light of the Atlantic. Walking its paths or floating in its boat channels, you feel nature breathing—birdcalls, gentle water, the scent of reed and mud, peace with occasional ruffles of activity. ⸻ Highlights · Diverse Wetland Habitats – Marshes, freshwater reedbeds, salt-water channels, ponds and mudflats form part of an internationally important nature reserve. · Observation Tower & Bird Hides – A 20-metre observatory gives panoramic views over Tralee Bay and views from several hides allow close views of birds and wildfowl. · Guided & Self-Guided Tours – Nature walks, electric boat tours, pond dipping, scavenger hunts, with knowledgeable guides (or exploring at your own pace). · Activity Park & Facilities – Beyond quiet nature there’s also play areas, pedalo boats, climbing wall, toddler playground, outdoor exercise areas, Lakeside Café, picnic spots. · Education & Conservation – Wildlife and ecology education programmes; biodiversity projects; a centre that connects people with conservation. ⸻ Practical Info · Location: Ballyard, Tralee, Co. Kerry. V92 HH57. · Opening Hours: The Eco & Activity Park is open daily (hours vary by season; Lakeside Café around 9 am-5 pm most days) · Accessibility: Paths and hides are designed to be accessible; facilities include toilets, café, parking, etc. · Best Time to Visit: Spring / early summer for bird activity and wildflowers; calm clear days for boat tours; mornings or late afternoon for softer light. ⸻ Why It’s Worth Visiting Tralee Bay Wetlands offers a rare mix: ease of access + ecological richness. You can shift from relaxation (coffee by the lakeside) to immersion (bird-watching, paddling, exploring reedbeds). For anyone who likes nature, quiet contrasting with colour and life, this is a gem. It’s also educational—everything visible connects you to wider habitats, conservation, wildlife. ⸻ Final Thoughts Take your time. Bring binoculars and a camera. Allow the sounds—the birds, water, wind—to settle you. Start with the tower for view, linger by hides, maybe take a boat tour. Let yourself move between moments of calm and discovery. Tralee Bay Wetlands feels best when experienced slowly.

#mytraveldiary Ambience & Setting Housed in the elegant Ashe Memorial Hall on Denny Street, Kerry County Museum sits close to Tralee Town Park, right in the centre of Tralee town. The building itself—completed in 1928 in Neo-Georgian stone—is stately and dignified: high windows, ashlar stonework, a sense of civic pride. Inside, the galleries are well-lit, thoughtfully laid out, blending archaeology, history, and local identity. The museum avoids feeling like a static display; there’s interaction, atmosphere, and connection with place. ⸻ Highlights · Medieval Experience – A reconstructed walk-through of Tralee as it was in the 15th century: market-town scenes, sounds, smells, helping you imagine life in medieval Kerry. · Archaeological & Heritage Collections – Objects from Kerry’s past: early medieval brooches, artefacts from local digs, items that illustrate everyday life and high-status culture in the county. · Tom Crean Gallery – Dedicated exhibit about the famed Kerry man and Antarctic explorer; personal artifacts, stories of his voyages. · Special Exhibitions & Education – Temporary exhibits change regularly, plus educational programming for schools, outreach & community, ensuring there’s something new or engaging on each visit. ⸻ Practical Info · Location: Ashe Memorial Hall, Denny Street, Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland V92 CXE3. · Established: The museum opened in 1992, converting Ashe Memorial Hall (built 1928) into a museum for the county’s material heritage. · Size & Facilities: About 1,750 m² of exhibition space; includes permanent galleries, temporary exhibition space, collections store, and education / outreach rooms. · Collections: Holds ~ 4,000 artefacts, under the National Monuments Act; covers both high culture and local life. ⸻ Why It’s Worth Visiting For visitors to Kerry—or to Tralee in particular—the museum is a concentrated way to understand the county’s identity. You see artefacts that tell of ancient social structures, remote communities, explorers; you see how geography, culture, history, and people intertwine. It’s accessible and engaging, not overwhelming, and gives texture to stories that otherwise might feel abstract (e.g. medieval town life, exploration, local archaeology). It also complements nearby walks, landscapes, coastlines by grounding them in human history. ⸻ Final Thoughts If I were visiting, I’d allow at least 1–1½ hours to do both the Medieval Experience and the archaeological galleries, possibly more if there’s a special exhibition. Best times are on weekdays when less crowded, or early in the day. Also pair it with a stroll through Tralee Town Park, which is adjacent and gives green breathing space before or after museum time.
