Before travelling to Portugal, octopus was not something I would normally consider ordering. It is quite an unusual dish where I live, so the first time I chose it was mainly out of curiosity. That first plate completely changed my plans for the rest of the trip. I enjoyed it so much that whenever I saw octopus on another restaurant menu, I wanted to try it again. What began as a one-time food experiment gradually became one of the dishes I ordered most often in Portugal. The versions varied slightly between restaurants, but the octopus was usually served with potatoes. It is a simple combination, yet it works remarkably well. The mild flavour of the potatoes balances the seafood, while olive oil, garlic and seasoning bring everything together. When prepared properly, octopus has a tender texture and a delicate flavour. Some restaurants served it with a lightly grilled or roasted exterior, adding a little smokiness and contrast. The potatoes were sometimes roasted until golden and sometimes served softer, soaking up the olive oil and juices from the plate. Trying the same dish in several places also became an interesting comparison. The basic ingredients remained familiar, but the texture, seasoning and presentation changed. One restaurant might focus on a beautifully charred tentacle, while another served a more traditional and comforting plate with generous potatoes and olive oil. That consistency was part of the appeal. Even though every version was different, the combination rarely felt overly complicated. Good ingredients and careful preparation were enough. Portugal has many famous foods, from pasteis de nata to bacalhau, but octopus became my personal discovery of the trip. I initially ordered it because it felt unfamiliar. I continued ordering it because it had become one of my favourite meals. If you have never tried octopus before, Portugal is an excellent place to begin. My travel personality is definitely the Planner. Before a trip, I study routes, transport, opening hours and the best times for photography. On our road trip through Portugal, for example, we drove almost 2,000 kilometres, so every overnight stop and major transfer had to fit together. Yet I do not plan because I want to follow a strict checklist. I plan because good preparation gives me more freedom during the journey. If the essential logistics are already solved, I can spend longer at a beautiful viewpoint, wait for better light or change the day when the weather turns. I can enjoy the experience instead of constantly checking how to reach the next place. My planning style has also changed over time. Lisbon is full of famous viewpoints and colorful streets, but I found some of my favorite moments when I wandered beyond the usual tourist route. I started at Mouraria, where narrow lanes, tiled buildings, tiny restaurants, and local life made the neighborhood feel much more authentic than the busy areas around Baixa. I loved simply walking without checking the map every few minutes. Then I headed to LX Factory, a former industrial complex transformed into a creative hub filled with shops, cafés, art, and restaurants. The old factory atmosphere mixed with modern creativity gave it a completely different personality. My third discovery was Jardim do Torel, a small hillside garden where I could sit quietly and look across Lisbon’s rooftops. It was the kind of place I would have easily walked past if I hadn’t been exploring slowly. I still visited Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, São Jorge Castle, Praça do Comércio, Alfama, Santa Justa Lift, and Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, but these three places showed me a more relaxed Lisbon and that was the side I enjoyed most. #lisbon #portugal

#slowtraveling Faial’s Caldeira is a 2 km-wide boardwalk on the rim of a 400 m wide crater, 10 min drive from Horta (bus 3 EUR, card ok, 2/day only). Entry 3 EUR at the r (cash or MB Way), opens 9–17. The rim is moss-carpeted heather and ferns; the crater floor is a green soup of endemic plants. I did the loop clockwise at 9 am—alone on the far, then it burned off by 10. Mistake: I wore sneakers—boardwalk is fine, but the side spur to the north viewpoint is mud and moss, slipped to one knee. Boots. A local ranger lent me her thermos of tea, pointed to the unique “cagarro” (storm petrel) nests in the cut—“a caldeira respira, não fales alto” (the caldeira breathes, don’t speak loud). Should a crater rim be boardwalked to save the moss, even if it distances you from the dirt?

Alfama is open all day year round, no tickets required, it is recommended to plan your route in advance, don’t be afraid of getting lost and you may encounter surprise alleys! Next stop is the Santa Lucia Observation Deck, which is recommended to go up at dusk, Largo de Santa Luzia, 1100-487 Lisboa. From here you can overlook the Red Roof and Tagus River, which is super good for taking pictures at sunrise, sunset or noon. Then walk up St. Jorge Castle, R. de Santa Cruz do Castelo, 1100-129 Lisboa. The castle is built on a hilltop and overlooks the best view of the entire city of Lisbon. It is recommended to go early in advance, there are fewer entrants before noon. The castle has different opening hours, 9:00-18:00 in winter and until 21:00 in summer, tickets are 191.5 (Portuguese currency). Please note that the museum will be closed on different holidays. When buying tickets, you can ask the staff to get a map for easy tours of the different exhibition areas and towers. Day 2 Featured Highlights: Geronimos Monastery, Praça do Império 1400-206 Lisboa. This World Heritage Site blends Manuel style with Gothic architectural details, very grand and every inch worth taking pictures. The lobby and cloister have the most outstanding views, and it is recommended to go before the doors open to avoid group guests. The monastery is closed on Mondays, other times 09:30-17:30 (last entry 17:00), tickets 150.0. Stop 2 Belem Tower, Av. Brasília, 1400-038 Lisboa. As a landmark of Lisbon, it is perfect for arrangement with the monastery. The appearance is like a grand little fortress, very photogenic from different angles, remember to bring sunscreen! Belenta is closed on Mondays and some public holidays, the rest of the days are open from 09:30-17:30, tickets are 116.0. The last stop is the unmissable sailing sunset experience in Lisbon, departing from the Belém district pier, enjoying the most magnificent coastline and golden sky along the way, very relaxing, while far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, great for slowing down and feeling the beauty of the journey. Practical tips: 1. The city is mainly walking, it is recommended to wear comfortable sneakers and bring water and snacks. 2. Lisbon money guide: exact ticket prices + how not to overpay in 3 days If you are flying into Lisbon soon, save this. Below are real 2026 prices and the moves that actually save money. Not vibes. Numbers. 1. Airport to center (do this first) At Aeroporto metro station buy a navegante occasional card for 0.50 euro. Load either: · zapping credit (pay per ride at 1.72 euro on metro/Carris), or · one Carris/Metro ride for 1.90 euro Red line metro to Baixa-Chiado / Saldanha area is about 20-30 min. Total first trip usually around 2.40 euro with the new card. Uber/Bolt to center is often around 8-15 euro depending on traffic and surge. Official airport taxi is often around 10-15 euro into the center (meter on, ask for receipt). Apps are usually cheaper than a random fixed price someone offers you. Do not buy the expensive onboard tram ticket later if you already have the card. On tram 28, onboard cash fare is about 3.30 euro. With zapping it is 1.72. That alone is a classic tourist tax. 2. Best transport setup for 3 days Card: navegante occasional = 0.50 euro, reloadable for a year. Price cheat sheet (2026): · single Carris/Metro: 1.90 euro · zapping Carris/Metro: 1.72 euro · 24h Carris/Metro unlimited: 7.25 euro · 24h Carris/Metro + CP trains (Sintra/Cascais lines): 11.40 euro · 24h with ferry to Cacilhas: 10.35 euro When 24h wins: If you will ride metro + tram + elevators more than about 4-5 times in 24 hours, take the 7.25 day pass. Santa Justa and the funiculars are covered on the Carris day ticket, and buying them separately hurts. When zapping wins: Slow days, mostly walking, 2-3 rides. Load 10 or 15 euro and stop thinking about tickets. Sintra day: Load the 11.40 euro 24h Carris/Metro/CP ticket that morning. Train Rossio or Oriente to Sintra, then bus 434 up to Pena. Tram 28 without losing your phone Ride it for the experience once, early (before 9) or later evening. Midday is pickpocket + sardine can. Cheaper and saner: walk chunks of the route (Graca / Alfama / Baixa) and use bus 737 toward the castle area when legs are done. Keep bag in front. No phone hanging out of back pockets. 6. Food budget that feels local Prato do dia (dish of the day) in a normal tasca: often about 8-12 euro and filling. Touristy photo menus in Baixa: easy to hit 18-25 euro for something worse. If you are visiting Lisbon and have one extra day, I really recommend taking a day trip to Sintra. It is not far from Lisbon, but once you arrive, the atmosphere feels completely different. The town is surrounded by green hills, beautiful palaces and some of the most unusual architecture I saw during my trip to Portugal. Getting here is quite easy. From Lisbon, you can take a direct train from Rossio Station to Sintra Station, which takes around 40 minutes. Once you arrive in Sintra, you can continue by local bus to the main attractions. I would recommend starting early because there is actually a lot to see, especially if you want to visit three places in one day like we did. For our day trip, we chose Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira and Monserrate Palace. What I really liked was that even though all three are in Sintra, they have completely different characters. 🏰 Pena Palace (Palácio Nacional da Pena) Our first stop was Pena Palace, probably the most famous landmark in Sintra. The palace sits high on the hill and is one of the most important examples of 19th-century Romantic architecture in Portugal. But forget the history for a moment — my first impression was that it looked like a giant LEGO castle! With its bright yellow and red walls, towers, domes, arches and so many different shapes put together, it is colourful, playful and almost unreal. It feels like someone took pieces from different fairytale castles and combined them into one. There are also lots of interesting details to discover as you walk around, including the famous Triton sculpture above one of the gateways. Don’t forget to walk out onto the terraces as well. Because the palace is located high on the hill, the panoramic view from here is beautiful. 🌳Quinta da Regaleira The whole place feels mysterious and a little magical. Instead of simply walking through palace rooms, you can explore gardens, stone towers, tunnels and hidden passages. There is always something around the next corner, so it really feels like you are exploring a fantasy world. The highlight is definitely the famous Initiation Well, a deep circular structure with a spiral staircase running down the inside. You can walk down into it and continue through the underground passages. This was probably the place that gave me the strongest feeling of being inside a fantasy movie — mysterious, unusual and fun to explore. 🌸Monserrate Palace (Palácio de Monserrate) From the outside, I already thought the palace was beautiful. The building is surrounded by greenery and gardens, with its elegant towers and domes standing out among the trees. But once I walked inside, it was even more beautiful. This is the kind of place where you should slow down and look at the details. The arches, columns, ceilings and intricate decorations are beautiful almost everywhere you look. The architecture combines different influences, including Gothic, Moorish and Indian elements, giving the palace a very elegant and exotic feeling. And it is not only the palace itself. The gardens around Monserrate are beautiful too, with plants from different parts of the world and plenty of greenery surrounding the property. #underratedspots If you’re visiting Dili and want one meal that tells you something about Timor-Leste’s history as well as its food, save Restaurante Tavirense — and come specifically for the seafood cataplana. 📍✨ Timorese cuisine doesn’t get nearly enough attention. And one of the most interesting things about eating here is how many different influences meet on the same table. 🇹🇱 Traditional food in Timor-Leste is built around ingredients such as rice, corn, cassava, sweet potato, vegetables, fish and seafood, with simple preparations that make sense for a tropical island country. But there’s another layer that immediately stands out: Portugal. 🇵🇹 Timor-Leste was under Portuguese rule for centuries, and that history is still visible today — Portuguese is one of the country’s official languages, and Portuguese culinary traditions have also remained part of the food culture. You’ll notice European-style breads, meat and seafood dishes, stews, coffee culture and recipes that feel surprisingly Portuguese for somewhere in Southeast Asia. This little Portuguese restaurant in Dili is very easy to overlook — the interior is simple, there’s no flashy rooftop or Instagram-perfect presentation. People specifically come here for the seafood cataplana, and for me this is the kind of restaurant worth saving because it adds another dimension to visiting Timor-Leste. You’re not simply eating seafood. Evora is an amazing place to visit! It is just ninety minutes driving east from Lisbon, so it is perfect for a two day getaway. The old town or center of Evora was declared an UNESCO Heritage site in 1986 and it is such a beautiful place. There are many things to see and experience in this historic Portuguese town but here follows the top five places to see. 1. Chapel of bones. The inside of this church had the bones of five thousand different humans. It is strange but also conveys the sense of humans being impermanence and ultimate demise. Good for a dose of reality! 2. Templo de Diana or Roman Temple. Great to see how far the ancient Empire spread. 3. Agua da Prata or The Silver Water Aquaduct. It surrounds the city and stands high abovebthe ground in some places. 4. Palacio Dom Manuel. A well manicured garden surrounds the palace and it is well taken care of and a nice place to sit outside and relax. 5. Cathedral of Evora. This is probably the most impressive site in the town. The entrance fee is five euros and the whole site is more than just the church. It takes about two hours to see everything. The view from the roof is amazing and should not be missed! After a full day of sight seeing I recommend stopping at the Praça do Giraldo (the huge main plaza) in the late afternoon. The area is full of bars, cafes and pastelerias to satisfy everyone. The thousand year old Marvāo Castle is perched high on the top of a small mountain in the east of Portugal. It is just over a hundred kilometers north from Evora town and makes for a great day trip. Driving the roads through the small villages in the morning is pleasant and peaceful but the castle is visible from far away up high on the top of the hill. There is huge area parking before entering the mainly pedestrian town of Marvāo.This old stone building built village has ancient cobbled streets and is filled with small shops, cafes and a fantastic tourist bureau with helpful people. It is a pleasant walk through the town before arriving at the castle proper. The castles secondary walls and lookouts cascade down along the hillside and are tightly integrated and connected to form an impenetrable barrier! Once you arrive at the top of the hill there is a small ticket concession and the entrance fee is two euros per person. Inside the castle are various courtyards, lookouts, old cannons, small replica living quarters, large towers, many gates, various fortified rooms and a small chapel. The views out over the lands below are breathtaking and to the east, less than ten kilometers away is Spain! There is also a series of underground cisterns to sustain the people in the event of a long siege. This castle has a medieval vibe and its stone work is gorgeous and marvelous. The actual situation on top of a mountain is impressive and yet mind boggling at the amount of work needed to construct it. Also the details that the architects were able to integrate in the construction is amazing! When we visited midweek there were only about twenty other people around, which was a nice change for a few hours from Evora but we happily drove back to the Hilton Garden Inn Evora. Our conversation was dominated by fantasies of what went on during the castle's busy medieval times. This quaint seaside town is located less than two hours drive south of Lisbon, so it is perfect for a weekend or short visit. I recommend staying at the Four Points by Sheraton Sesimbra and try to check in early and walk over to the Port for an amazing seafood lunch at one of the many restaurants. Afterwards you could lounge by the pool, walk along the two kilometers of beach in front of the town or do like the locals and have a nap. In the evening it is a five minute walk into town, do not bother driving around the parking in town is difficult. There are many nice coffee bars and pastry shoyp around for a treat before you go down to the esplanade to watch the sunset. There is the reconstruction of parts of the old sea walls and buildings, that are now filled with artisan shops. There are some beautiful things to see and purchase as souvenirs or gifts. The better restaurants usually begin opening around seven for dinner and there are many options but I recommend going into the winding streets of the town to find a more intimate restaurant. Day 2 - I suggest going to the Cabo do Espichel area. Here you can visit Faro(lighthouse) do Cabo Espichel, Santuario de Nossa Senihora (a fantastic old church) and Momumento Natural da Pedra Dumua (dinosaur foorprints). These three things can be explored from the same parking area. After about three hours exploring, you could drive five kilometers and explore a busy beach(Praia de Alfarim) or more deserted beach (Praia das Bicas or Praia da Foz). They are enormous beaches looking our onto the Atlantic Ocean and I felt the vastness of the environment here. It is really impressive. On the way back to Sesimbra I recommend stopping in Santana to see the Castle of Sesimbra. If you're looking for a way to slow down, challenge yourself, time for introspection, you need to get over something or you just want a chance to have long deep chats with new people... I can't recommend walking this coastal trail enough! With just 10 days (even if I recommend to have 3-4 extra ones to visit Porto and Santiago) you can walk from Porto, Portugal to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, all along the ocean on one of the most stunning and peaceful coastal trails! Originally a religious pilgrimage, today the Camino de Santiago is walked by many for different reasons that often have nothing to do with religion at all (this was my case too!), what's still needed is a open heart, respect for the nature and places you'll be going through and willingness to share (spaces, stories, meals...) and be grounded and humble. You'll spend your nights mostly in communal albergues, most of them are on first come first serve basis, cheap on purpose to allow anyone to be part of this experience, usually 5-15€. Other accommodations of different types and tiers are usually available (might need to book in advance, I used Trip.com for hostels occasionally and for my stay in Porto!) but I truly recommend to enjoy this to the fullest by sharing your days and nights with other people walking the same path as you. You can use the official Camino de Santiago website to plan your itinerary to perfectly fit your needs and physical abilities, you might need more or less days than I did or you might prefer to take breaks along the way to enjoy the stunning beaches along the ocean. I met incredible people, ate delicious food and got a chance so visit many smaller hidden gem towns and nature spots that normal travelling wouldn't normally let you stop by... Personally, it was one of my favorite views, making me feel like I was truly in Lisbon! ☺️ · When I visited, it was out of service, and the specific date for reopening was not yet known. · Address: Largo do Calhariz, 1200-086 Lisboa, Portugal · Access: Approximately 7 minutes on foot from Baixa-Chiado Station, or immediately from tram line 28, Largo do Calhariz. ⑦ Pink Street (Rua Cor-de-Rosa / Rua Nova do Carvalho) 💗 As the name suggests, this photogenic street is entirely pink. I was surprised by how intensely pink it was! · Address: R. Nova do Carvalho, 1200-161 Lisboa, Portugal · Access: Approximately 2 minutes on foot from Cais do Sodré Station. ⑧ Painted Rocks (Painted Stone Street Art) 🪨 I found these colorful and cute painted stones while walking around the city. I realized that discovering things you can only find by walking is one of the joys of exploring Lisbon. ☺️ · Address: R. Vinha, 1200-295 Lisboa, Portugal · Access: Approximately 7 minutes on foot from Baixa-Chiado Station. ⑨ Av. Ribeira das Naus 🌊 A place where you can take a leisurely stroll along the Tagus River. I went there at lunchtime, but it seems to be a sunset spot as well! · Address: Av. Ribeira das Naus, 1200-000 Lisboa, Portugal · Access: Approximately 5 minutes on foot from Cais do Sodré Station or Baixa-Chiado Station ⑩ Praça do Comércio (Comércio Square) 🏛️ A large square with a yellow building, and the Tagus River stretching out beyond. Events are often held here, and there was one when I went! · Address: Praça do Comércio, 1100-148 Lisboa, Portugal · Access: Directly connected to Terreiro do Paço Station on the Blue Line, or approximately 5 minutes on foot from Baixa-Chiado Station. ⑪ Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos) 🧭⛵ A monument symbolizing Portugal's Age of Discovery. It was bigger than I expected, and I was deeply moved as I looked up at it! · Address: Av. If you want to see the most charming side of Lisbon, spend a few hours simply getting lost in Alfama. With its winding alleyways, colourful tiled buildings, tiny balconies, and iconic yellow trams, Alfama feels like a place where every corner has a story. ✨ 🚶♀️ The Best Way to Explore Don’t follow a strict route—just wander. · Walk through the narrow cobbled streets · Climb the little stairways and hills · Look out for traditional Portuguese tiles on the buildings · Stop whenever you see a beautiful view · Watch the famous yellow trams squeeze through the tiny streets 🚋 📸 My Favourite Part Taking photos of the trams from different angles. Sometimes they’re climbing a steep hill, sometimes disappearing around a corner, and sometimes perfectly framed between the colourful buildings. You can wait for the same tram and still get a completely different photo every time. 🌅 Don’t Miss the Viewpoints Alfama is full of miradouros with beautiful views over Lisbon’s terracotta rooftops and the Tagus River. Miradouro de Santa Luzia is especially beautiful, with its traditional tiles, flowers, and views over the neighbourhood. 🎶 Feel the Local Atmosphere Alfama is also famous for Fado, Lisbon’s traditional music. In the evening, the narrow streets become even more atmospheric, with the sound of Fado coming from small restaurants and traditional venues. 🎵 💡 Tips for Visiting · Wear comfortable shoes—the hills and cobblestones are no joke! · Go early if you want quieter streets and better photos. · Keep your camera ready—the best photo opportunities are often unexpected. · Don’t be afraid to get lost; that’s part of the Alfama experience. · Stay until evening to experience the neighbourhood when the Fado atmosphere comes alive. ✨ Alfama isn’t somewhere you visit just to see the sights. It’s somewhere you wander, pause, look up, and let the city unfold around you.
