Our first impression was how clean, comfortable, quiet, and punctual the Russian trains were. It was a pleasant ride, and we arrived in no time. Vyborg is a small town with a long history, built by Swedes before being successively under Russian and Finnish rule. This gives it a unique charm, with architecture and an atmosphere that perfectly blends the cultures of all three countries. But the highlight of this trip wasn't the autumn foliage! As soon as we stepped off the train, we, the only "black-haired people #vyborgrussia at the station," were immediately greeted by a female police officer! They started by checking our passports, followed by our return flight tickets and registration papers for our accommodation in Russia (ours weren't asked). Then, the first officer called a second officer for assistance because we couldn't communicate in English, and finally, they called for an undercover male officer to help with the search. It was a bit confusing at first, but it's understandable. Since it's a border town, the authorities are especially strict about preventing illegal immigration. If you're planning a trip here, remember to always carry all your travel documents with you. After overcoming that initial excitement, what awaits is the breathtaking view of golden yellow autumn leaves covering the entire city. The weather in late October is very cold, with strong winds that make your face shiver and your hands so cold you have to keep them in your pockets. But it's this coldness that makes Vyborg incredibly romantic and enchanting. This city might not be on everyone's top tourist list, but for us, Vyborg was one of the most memorable one-day trips from Saint Petersburg. We traveled to Vyborg by commuter train from the Finland Station in St. Petersburg. We bought our tickets at the station right before the 11:25 AM departure. The train was already packed when we boarded; we barely managed to find empty seats, and many passengers had to stand. We arrived in Vyborg at 12:37 PM. From the station, we first walked to the Alvar Aalto Library. Alvar Aalto is the architect who designed the library and the famous IKEA stool. You can actually see these same stools inside the library. The building features a minimalist style both inside and out, finished with white plaster and wood. We popped inside and checked out the halls with their round skylights. Next, we headed toward the historical center. We immediately noticed that the city has a very European vibe, somewhat unusual for Russia and highly appealing to tourists—it definitely deserves to be fully restored and showcased to the world. We walked past the post office, the cathedral, and a yellow tram, eventually reaching a square with a round tower. The tower is truly striking, catching your eye with its unexpectedly medieval appearance and unique shape. Without a second thought, we went up for lunch at the restaurant inside the tower to check out the medieval interior. The menu even includes a brief history of the building. We ordered a warm chicken and sun-dried tomato salad, pork loin, julienne, and some beer. The julienne was the highlight! Overall, the food wasn't mind-blowing—we'd give it a solid 4 out of 5, and the prices were a bit steep. However, the view of the square from the small windows and the medieval atmosphere more than made up for any downsides. I highly recommend popping in, even if just for a cup of tea. After lunch, we continued our walk. We picked up some souvenirs at the market in the square near the tower. Then, we strolled down Krasnoarmeyskaya Street, which is lined with charming souvenir shops and cafes selling pretzels. Krepostnaya Street is packed with landmarks and is a great walk in itself. One of the first attractions here is the oldest residential house in Russia. Just take a left and walk a little way up the street—right before the fenced-off ruins stands the very house that has witnessed everything in this city. We then walked to the Church of St. Hyacinth, took in the Town Hall Tower from all angles, went down to the Burgher House, and browsed its souvenir shop. After that, we headed down to Old Town Hall Square, admiring the harbor and Vyborg Castle. We crossed the bridge and explored the castle grounds. Next, we took a taxi to Monrepos Park. The forest and the coastal area are absolutely stunning! There's not much to do right at the entrance, and it can get a bit crowded, but it's definitely worth taking the short eco-trail to soak in the nature and breathe the fresh air! On our way back to the train station, we asked our taxi driver to swing by the Town Hall Tower and drive past the Merchant Guild House. All in all, we managed to see every landmark we had planned. We bought tickets for the next train and were in our seats by 6:44 PM. We made it back to St. Petersburg right around 8:00 PM.

Immediately upon exiting the train, we were greeted by the white nights—the sky was twilight, and the street lighting created a cozy atmosphere. We checked into an apartment in an 1882 building near Finland Station. The entrance greeted us with wide staircases, large windows, and beautiful wooden doors. The location was very convenient: a cozy enclosed courtyard and five minutes from trains to all the main tourist destinations. We began our city walk with the Cruiser Aurora and the Peter and Paul Fortress, then crossed the Spit of Vasilievsky Island to Palace Square. Unfortunately, it was closed due to preparations for Russia Day, so we weren't able to catch the perfect view—I recommend checking the dates of major events in advance! One of the highlights was the excursion on the "St. Petersburg Venice" motor ship: we sailed along the Moika River, the Winter Canal, the Fontanka River, and the Kryukov Canal. We saw all the drawbridges, Peter the Great's Cabin, and even "fed" Chizhik-Pyzhik with a coin. We rested our legs for an hour and a half and enjoyed listening to the guide. Cultural Program: · The Hermitage — we bought skip-the-line tickets from the vending machine and toured three floors. We saw Leonardo da Vinci's Madonna Litta and Benois, as well as paintings by Rembrandt and Rubens. · Tsarskoye Selo — we took the commuter train, strolled through Pushkin, and then headed to the Catherine Palace. The Amber Room and the 1,000-square-meter Golden Hall were the most impressive! The tour was interesting, even without water. · Peterhof — we explored the Lower Park and fountains, and I went separately to Alexandria Park (the imperial family residence) — it's cozy, green, and almost completely devoid of tourists. We returned by hydrofoil—much faster and more comfortable than the commuter train. · Vyborg—we also got there by commuter train (staying near the train station is super convenient). We saw the medieval round tower, the oldest house in Russia, the cathedral, and Monrepos Park. The city is European, but there are a lot of renovations going on—it will be even more beautiful in the future. Of course, we visited all the main sights: Kazan Cathedral, St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Admiralty, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, stopped by the House of Books, strolled around New Holland Island, took a photo near the Bronze Horseman, and rode scooters along the embankment near the Lakhta Center. About the food: It's hard to go wrong with your choice in St. Petersburg—almost everything is delicious. I especially remember the Brisket bar (steaks and ramen), the Butcher's House restaurant (ribs and burgers 🔥), the Holy Ribs bar (chocolate-covered ribs), as well as the Bushe bakery and Black Wood pub. The smelt here is completely different from the Far Eastern variety, but it's worth trying! We walked dozens of kilometers over six days, but the white nights, the blooming lilacs on the Field of Mars, and the architecture were worth every step! The tower is located on Castle Island at the address: 1 Castle Island, Vyborg, and is part of the Vyborg United Museum-Reserve. Throughout its centuries-long history, the tower has been rebuilt several times, sustaining damage during sieges and fires, which altered the shape of its main body and base. 🛠️For a long time, access to the top of the tower was closed due to large-scale reconstruction work. In 2025, the tower was reopened to the public. The restorers did an incredible job! A massive illuminated spiral staircase and a glass elevator for tower staff, visitors with limited mobility, and seniors over 60 (to use the elevator, you must book in advance by phone via the museum's website) blend beautifully into the tower's medieval architecture! The embrasures, walls, windows, and the tower's dome have also been restored. There are other restored premises on the island open to the public (the main museum building, the armory, the governor's house). There is a free restroom on the island! 🧧The cost to go up the tower is 500 rubles. In addition to this, you can stroll around the entire island, visit the cafe, and take part in various activities: archery, or forging a spoon, knife, or various amulets in the smithy. ❗️Tickets are sold at the box offices at the entrance to the island. It is better to arrive before 11 AM, as long lines form later both at the ticket offices and inside the tower itself! ☝🏻The number of tickets is limited! 🤩An incredibly picturesque view opens up from the tower's observation deck! Massive granite cliffs, century-old pine trees, winding trails, and breathtaking views of the bay make you feel like you've stepped into Karelia or even traveled back in time. In fact, many refer to Monrepos as a miniature Karelia. The entire area is steeped in history. In addition to the main walking areas, the park features an eco-trail where you might spot some local squirrels. 🚅How to get there from St. Petersburg Take a commuter train from the Finland Station to Vyborg. The "Lastochka" high-speed train will get you there comfortably in 1 hour and 10 minutes (provided it's not too crowded). From the Vyborg railway station, you can reach the park by taxi in 10 minutes or enjoy a 40-minute walk. 📄Tickets You can purchase tickets at the on-site ticket office, but be prepared for long lines during the busy summer months. It's easy to find, and you can visit by purchasing a ticket online in advance. You'll be given a fascinating tour on site in a small group; there were only 12 of us! Please note that children under 12 are not allowed ⛔, as the stairs can be unsafe for children. Upon reaching the top of the tower 🏃♀️, you can see the workings of the ancient clock mechanism. If you want to hear it chime, schedule your tour for 12:00 PM. The clock mechanism🕰️ is the heart of the tower. The clock mechanism is completely autonomous, but it requires regular manual winding, so a caretaker climbs up to lift the weights when necessary. The Tower's observation deck deserves special attention, offering visitors a 360-degree view. From it, visitors can see the port of Vyborg and Vyborg Bay, which is part of the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea.

We climbed on foot, but an elevator is available for certain categories of people. The observation deck itself is quite narrow, and people are admitted in batches, but you can stay there as long as you like.
