Introduction to Miyun, Beijing

Gubei Water Town and Simatai Great Wall

Gubei Water Town, located in Beijing's Miyun District, faithfully reproduces the bustling atmosphere and architecture of a historic border town at the foot of the Great Wall. The scenic area preserves numerous historical and cultural venues, where visitors can personally experience and participate in traditional heritage crafts.
As night falls and the lights come on, climbing a nearby hill to take in the night views of the water town and the Great Wall has become the most popular way to enjoy the area. The town hosts over 50 performances daily, with the most spectacular being the Great Wall Tower Show, which combines light displays, live performances, and fireworks. Visitors can also take a scenic rowboat ride to admire the beautiful views of the water town and the Great Wall.
Located within Gubei Water Town, the Simatai Great Wall is the only section that retains its original Ming Dynasty appearance, and the only one open for night tours year-round. This unique blend of day and night experiences, pairing the charm of the water town with the majesty of the Great Wall, has made it a top destination for both domestic and international travelers.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, the Simatai Great Wall is originally built in 1373, during the early Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty. And it is the only section in China that completely retains its authentic Ming Dynasty appearance. Hailed as the 'Best of the Great Wall,' it famously topped The Times' list of the world's 25 must-see landscapes. Stretching 5.7 kilometers, the wall features 35 watchtowers, with the first ten towers of the eastern section currently open for exploration. Simatai is renowned for five distinct features: its thrilling, near-vertical ascents; an unusually high density of watchtowers; its picturesque reflection in Yuanyang Lake; its brilliant adaptation to the natural contours of the mountains; and its complete array of original fortifications. Together, these elements make Simatai a true 'living museum' of ancient military engineering.

Panlongshan Great Wall, Gubeikou

Located in Beijing's Miyun District, the Panlongshan section of the Great Wall offers a beautifully rugged and unrestored experience. As a vital part of the Ming Dynasty defense system, it retains its original, weathered stonework, making it a classic "Wild Great Wall" destination for adventurers. Dating back to the Northern Qi Dynasty (555 AD) and later heavily reinforced during the Ming Dynasty, this area is steeped in military history and even served as a major battlefield during the 1933 Defense of the Great Wall.
Today, the 5-kilometer hiking route takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete, leading visitors past 19 historic watchtowers, including the iconic General Tower and the 24-Hole Tower. Spectacular year-round, Panlongshan offers blooming wildflowers in spring, vibrant foliage in fall, and striking snowscapes in winter.
It is especially famous among photographers for its breathtaking sunrise and sunset views. Blending ancient military architecture with modern history, it is a must-visit for history buffs and photography enthusiasts alike.

Seek Your "Sea" in Miyun

Located in northeastern Beijing, Miyun is the city's largest district and a dedicated ecological conservation area. With over 70% forest coverage, Miyun boasts a pristine environment, consistently ranking first in Beijing for both air and environmental quality. Offering a true breath of fresh air, the district serves as a natural haven, with air purity up to 40 times higher than the downtown core.
