The Tang Dynasty Never Sleeps City truly lives up to its reputation as a benchmark for nighttime tourism in Xi&#39;an. The entire street is ablaze with lights in the Tang Dynasty style, and street performances and ancient-style NPCs are everywhere. The whole experience is free and the atmosphere is fantastic. Strolling through it feels like stepping back into the glorious Tang Dynasty capital of Chang&#39;an. The night view is absolutely stunning and it&#39;s a must-visit destination in Xi&#39;an.

Firstly, it's beautiful inside, with plenty of photo ops. If you'd like, you can dress up in traditional costumes and have a photo shoot with a photographer (the locals really love it). Secondly, there are small performances in different areas on different floors: in one place, they play local musical instruments, in another, they dance, and in a third, they put on an immersive show. All the performances are very colorful and fun! You can also grab a bite to eat and try some drinks inside.

Calling all Potterheads! It turns out Starbucks actually teams up with other brands to transform their cafes into immersive spaces.
In Guangzhou, a Starbucks was turned into a mini Hogwarts complete with atmospheric photo zones✨ Think house crests, flying letters suspended from the ceiling, and, of course, the Sorting Hat!
To be honest, we were hoping for a "Butterbeer Frappuccino," but the menu turned out to be their standard offering 😔
The cafe itself is housed in a gorgeous two-story colonial mansion with a massive green veranda—arguably in the most unique neighborhood in Guangzhou, Shamian Island. Back in the 19th century, it was an Anglo-French concession, which is why expats developed it with European-style villas, quiet tree-lined avenues, fountains, and bronze sculptures.

If you’re into architecture, this Starbucks is worth seeing even without the Harry Potter theme. The high ceilings and balcony feel straight out of a movie.

I grew up in Shanghai, and those neighborhoods always felt like a different world to me. The old houses, narrow streets, and terrace cafés have their own rhythm compared to the rest of the city.

So what was going on in these European neighborhoods at the beginning of the last century? 😏
Here's a brief overview of how Europeans turned China upside down in the 19th century:
Europe and England were crazy about Chinese goods: tea, silk, porcelain, etc. China, however, only accepted precious metals for payment, creating a kind of trade imbalance in Europe. But by chance, Britain discovered a commodity the Chinese couldn't resist—opium (that same "poppy juice").
The Chinese happily became hooked on the new drug and were willing to give anything for it! When the nation's health began to fail, China recognized the problem, decided to fight it—and publicly sank thousands of tons of opium contraband into the sea.
Thus began the legendary Opium Wars. China lost, Hong Kong had to be ceded to England, and the remaining Europeans began landing at ports across the country.
The French staked out a piece of Shanghai for themselves.
Moreover, they created a "state within a state." Chinese laws were completely ignored there, and all of Asia came to Shanghai to "have fun." The area instantly became a den of spies, underground casinos, and smugglers.
Now this bohemian Parisian memory is strictly protected by the state—tearing down old villas and building skyscrapers there is prohibited.

We were so surprised when we shared our e-SIM data with them, and the payment issues in those places disappeared 🤷♀️
