#funtravel2026 📍 Surya Kembar, Ubud, Bali If I could add one more personality to this week’s Travel Personality list, I think I’ve finally found mine: The Slow Traveler. 🌿 I love exploring. I love discovering hidden gems, trying local food, taking hundreds of photos and fitting as much as possible into every trip. But Bali has been teaching me another way to travel. Sometimes the best plan really is no plan at all. One evening at Surya Kembar, instead of chasing another sunset spot or squeezing one more attraction into the day, I stayed in the pool while daylight slowly disappeared, ordered food and simply… stayed. No checklist. No rush. No “where are we going next?” Just warm Bali air, water, tropical greenery, good food and one of those wonderfully slow evenings that somehow become a travel memory. 🌙 And that’s exactly why I wanted to share this place. 🌴 THE ATMOSPHERE Surya Kembar feels like a little escape from the busier side of Ubud. The surroundings are green and tropical, and the whole place has that relaxed villa-style atmosphere that makes you want to stay much longer than you originally planned. What I particularly loved was experiencing it in the evening. Come while there’s still daylight and you get the classic tropical Bali feeling. Stay until after sunset and the mood completely changes — quieter, softer and much more intimate. 💦 THE POOL EXPERIENCE This was probably my favorite part. There’s something wonderfully indulgent about coming somewhere without a strict schedule, getting into the pool and realizing you actually don’t need to be anywhere else for the next few hours. It turns a simple restaurant visit into a mini Bali escape. My ideal plan here would be exactly what we did: arrive with enough time to relax, swim, enjoy the surroundings and then stay for food. 🍽️ AND YES, THERE’S FOOD Because apparently even my Slow Traveler personality is still very much a Foodie. 😄 Being able to combine pool time with a proper meal is one of the things I liked about Surya Kembar. You don’t need to pack up and immediately start searching for somewhere else for dinner — you can simply continue the evening in the same relaxed setting. And honestly, after swimming and spending a few hours outside, food tastes even better. 📸 COME FOR THE PHOTOS — BUT STAY AFTER THEM Surya Kembar is also a beautiful place for photos. Pool, palms, tropical greenery and Bali light — you already have most of the ingredients. 💡 My tip: if you want photos, arrive before sunset. Take them while there’s still enough natural light, enjoy the transition into evening and then put your phone away for a while. Some places are worth photographing. Others remind you that you don’t have to photograph every minute of being there. This one gave me a little bit of both. ❤️ ✨ WHO IS THIS PLACE FOR? I’d particularly recommend Surya Kembar if you: · need a break between busy sightseeing days around Ubud · love combining good food with pool time · want somewhere where you can actually stay for a few hours · enjoy tropical, relaxed surroundings · are looking for a slower afternoon or evening · want beautiful Bali photos without making the entire experience about photos 💡 A FEW TIPS BEFORE YOU GO 🌿 Don’t rush it. I wouldn’t come here just to eat quickly and leave. Give yourself a few hours and make the pool part of the experience. 🌅 Late afternoon into evening is my favorite timing. You get daylight, golden-hour atmosphere and the completely different mood after dark. 👙 Bring your swimsuit. Even if you initially think you’re only stopping for food. 📸 Take your photos earlier. Once it gets properly dark, just enjoy the evening. 🍽️ Stay for a meal. It makes much more sense to experience the place as one long relaxing afternoon/evening rather than treating the restaurant and pool as separate activities. 🗓️ Save places like this for the middle of a busy Bali itinerary. After several days of temples, waterfalls, cafés, viewpoints and day trips, having absolutely nowhere else to be can feel surprisingly luxurious. ⭐ WORTH IT OR NOT? For me: worth it. But not because Surya Kembar is another Bali attraction you need to add to an already overcrowded itinerary. Quite the opposite. I liked it because for a few hours, there was no itinerary. And maybe that’s the side of my travel personality Bali has helped me discover. I’m still an Explorer. 🎒 Definitely a Foodie. 🍜 Very often a Photographer. 📸 And, admittedly, quite a Planner. 😄 But increasingly, I’m also The Slow Traveler. The traveler who is learning that seeing more doesn’t necessarily mean experiencing more. Sometimes you don’t need another temple, another viewpoint or another pin on the map. Some places in Bali look like they should come with an expensive entrance ticket. Tirta Gangga is not one of them. 📍 Tirta Gangga Water Palace, East Bali This former royal water palace in Karangasem was built by the last King of Karangasem and today is famous for its fountains, pools, stone statues, gardens and those iconic stepping stones surrounded by huge koi fish. (Instagram) And for this week’s Travel Budget — Splurge or Save?, I’d put Tirta Gangga firmly into the: 💰 SAVE category — and still get a beautiful experience. The current foreign-adult entrance fee is around IDR 90,000 (roughly $5–6 USD), which feels surprisingly reasonable for one of East Bali’s most recognizable attractions. (Bali Holiday Secrets) For me, this is exactly where travel budgeting gets interesting. You don’t necessarily need an expensive private experience, fancy café or elaborate photo package to enjoy a place. Buy the basic entrance ticket, walk through the gardens, cross the stepping stones, watch the enormous koi and simply take your time. 📸 A few tips I’d save before visiting: · Come early. Tirta Gangga gets much busier later in the day, and early morning is much nicer for both photos and actually enjoying the atmosphere. #pesonaindonesia_id One of my favorite things about Bali is that you don’t have to choose between amazing seafood and traditional local dishes… but if you had to pick just one, what would it be? 👀 🦐 Seafood lovers will find plenty to enjoy here. Fresh grilled fish (ikan bakar), prawns, squid, clams and lobster are served all over the island, especially in Jimbaran, where many restaurants display the day’s catch on ice and grill it over coconut charcoal right after you order. 🍗 Traditional Balinese chicken is a completely different experience. The island’s signature dish is Ayam Betutu—a whole chicken slowly cooked for hours with a rich blend of Balinese spices, including turmeric, ginger, galangal, garlic, shallots, chili and aromatic herbs. The result is incredibly tender, flavorful meat that’s unlike fried chicken or regular grilled chicken. #worthitornot This is probably one of the best examples of why I don’t think every famous Bali photo spot should be treated as just a photo spot. 📍 Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang, East Bali We left Ubud at around 3:30 AM and drove for almost two hours to get there early. And even after arriving that early, we were already around number 27–28 in the photo queue. 😅 The reason, of course, is the famous “Gates of Heaven” photo with Mount Agung perfectly framed between the gates. Except… ☁️ the weather had other plans. It was cloudy when we visited, and Mount Agung was almost completely hidden. So the iconic volcano backdrop we had seen in hundreds of photos? Not happening that morning. 😂 And that leads to my biggest tip: 🌦️ CHECK THE WEATHER BEFORE YOU GO. If your main reason for making the long journey is specifically to get that famous photo with Mount Agung, I would absolutely check the forecast first. Because waking up at 3 AM, driving for two hours and waiting in line can feel pretty disappointing if the mountain is completely covered by clouds. And personally? 📸 I would NOT travel all that way only for the photo. But I would travel there for Lempuyang itself. That was the difference for me. Behind the Instagram-famous gate is a place that feels much bigger than a photo opportunity. Lempuyang is a sacred Balinese Hindu temple complex, and standing there early in the morning, surrounded by mountains and temple architecture, was genuinely impressive. Even without the perfect volcano view, I wasn’t disappointed that we came. The temple felt majestic, spiritual and powerful — and that experience mattered much more to me than whether Mount Agung appeared in my picture. 💰 SPLURGE OR SAVE? For this week’s Travel Budget — Splurge or Save?, I’d say: Splurge on the experience, not on chasing the perfect Instagram photo. Getting here takes time, transport and a very early start, so I wouldn’t call it an effortless or cheap Bali stop. But if you’re interested in Balinese culture, temples and sacred places, I think it deserves a place in an East Bali itinerary. If you only want that one viral photo? I’m not sure I’d spend several hours of my trip on it. 💡 My Lempuyang PROtips: · Leave extremely early. We left Ubud at 3:30 AM and still weren’t the first ones there. · Expect roughly two hours of driving from Ubud, depending on traffic and your exact starting point. · Check the cloud cover around Mount Agung, not just whether the forecast says “rain” or “sun.” · Don’t build the entire experience around one photograph. · Give yourself time to actually look at the temple instead of taking the photo and immediately leaving. · Combine Lempuyang with other East Bali stops — that makes the long drive much more worthwhile. And maybe the most important reminder: ✨ Sometimes the famous photo is the least interesting part of the place. We didn’t get our perfect Mount Agung shot. But I’m still very glad we went.
