Shenzhen is great but I won’t come again because it really is…
Shenzhen is great, but I won’t go back 😭 honest and heartfelt travel experience
Just got back from a trip to Shenzhen!!
I really want to say from the bottom of my heart: Shenzhen is beautiful, clean, and bustling, but it’s really not suitable for pure tourists to come a second time 🥲
No exaggeration or sugarcoating!!
First, honestly praise Shenzhen: the city’s greenery is amazing, the streets are clean and tidy, the skyscrapers are healing, the sea views are wide and soothing, transportation is highly developed, and the overall order is excellent. It’s a very livable, work-friendly, and super city!
But if you’re spending money and time just to travel, the experience gap is huge!!
I’ve put together a very detailed real travel review + a comprehensive guide to avoid pitfalls. Sisters planning to visit Shenzhen must read this before you go!!
✅ First, the truth: Shenzhen has many things worth praising
I have to admit, Shenzhen’s cityscape is really impressive!
🌊 Shenzhen Bay Park
The top spot for Shenzhen’s beauty in my heart! A 13 km long coastal trail with soothing mangroves on one side and a stunning CBD skyline on the other. The sunset over Orange Sea in the evening is breathtaking, with gentle breezes and wide views. Cycling or walking here is super relaxing. This free attraction beats many paid ones in quality. Every photo looks like a high-end scene!
🌊 Jediaosha
The jelly sea of Shenzhen! The water is super clear, with beautiful layers, and the sand is fine and soft, very comfortable to walk on. It’s much less crowded than Dameisha, clean and soothing. On good days, it feels like an island. This is the top choice for sea views!
🌌 Talent Park
The night view is legendary! The light show on the Spring Bamboo Tower combined with the lake reflection is stunning and sophisticated. The evening breeze is pleasant, the environment is clean, perfect for walking, taking photos, or relaxing at night. The atmosphere is full.
🌿 Overall city quality is top-notch
The streets are clean with no trash, greenery coverage is very high, roads are wide and orderly, the subway is extensive, people are polite, and city security is excellent. The city feels modern, youthful, and full of vibe, making photos look great!
If you’re just looking at scenery and city development, Shenzhen is truly flawless!
❌ Why won’t I come back for tourism? These are the real pain points
1. Heavy influencer filters on popular spots, big gap from reality
Most of Shenzhen’s viral spots rely on influencer filters; the real scenes are very ordinary!
❌ Dongxing / Beizai Jiao Lighthouse
Online photos show stunning cliff sea views and clean coastlines, but the real scene is very simple!
The beach is exposed to the sun with no shade, almost no facilities, no rest areas, no showers, no lockers.
The check-in spot is remote on mountain roads. After visiting, it’s almost impossible to get a regular ride back. Illegal taxis charge sky-high prices, don’t use meters, and add fees on the spot. The experience is terrible.
❌ Gankeng Ancient Town
Not an ancient town at all! The whole street is full of trendy snacks, milk tea shops, and Yiwu small commodity stores. It’s extremely commercialized with almost no Hakka cultural heritage. There are vendors shouting everywhere, no peaceful ancient town vibe, very boring to walk around, and very low value for money.
❌ Dongmen Old Street
Almost no locals come here!
The whole street is full of cheap, identical small goods and mass-produced trendy snacks with average taste and high markups. Many roadside snacks have no hygiene guarantees. Digital products and small accessories are risky and easy to get scammed. There’s no local character, and the visit leaves no impression.
❌ Window of the World
Tickets are expensive but the value is very low!
Basically a large-scale miniature park. You can finish taking photos and checking in within half an hour. The prices inside are high, the attractions are outdated, and except for the light show, there’s not much to see. It’s not worth buying a ticket just to visit.
2. Summer weather is a huge deterrent! You can’t really enjoy it
Visiting Shenzhen in July or August takes real courage!!
High heat + high humidity + strong sun + sudden heavy rain. It’s hot and sticky all day, the air is very humid, and you’ll be soaked within 5 minutes outside. UV rays are very strong; without sunscreen, you’ll get sunburned.
The worst part is the weather is totally unpredictable!
One moment it’s clear, the next it’s a storm. Outdoor plans can be canceled anytime.
Summer is also typhoon season. If a typhoon hits, beaches and parks close, and you’re stuck in the hotel the whole time, wasting your trip!
Want to stroll, shop, or enjoy the sea breeze? Forget it! You have to tough out the heat 🥵
3. Many hidden traps in food and activities, tourists get ripped off easily
✅ Seafood traps
Never eat at seafood stalls right at the beach or scenic spots!!
They usually shortchange, overcharge, and have huge markups!
If you want affordable fresh seafood, go straight to Shekou Market or Yantian Seafood Street. Buy seafood yourself and have it cooked at a shop. It’s cheaper and fresher!
✅ Many scams at the beach
Don’t trust photographers, speedboat rides, or beach prop rentals who approach you at the beach!
They lure you in with low prices, then add fees after photos or boat rides. If you don’t pay, they won’t let you leave. It’s full of tricks!
Never take private speedboats. They have no safety guarantees and charge sky-high prices. Choose official docks if you want to take a boat!
✅ Hidden transportation fees
Be careful riding shared electric scooters in old city areas or near attractions!!
Many places have no official return spots. Parking anywhere can result in high dispatch fees, costing you dozens or even hundreds more!
✅ Specialty product traps
Don’t buy lychee wine, fruit wine, or gift box specialties sold at scenic spots!
Most are artificially flavored, taste bad, and are overpriced. For souvenirs, go to large supermarkets!
4. Almost no local character, very homogeneous experience
Shenzhen is a super young immigrant city with no exclusive local cuisine, no deep cultural heritage, and no unique folk scenery.
The food is all nationwide trendy snacks, milk tea, and street food. The attractions are all influencer check-in spots, shopping districts, and sea views.
Shopping malls, skyscrapers, trendy streets—any big city can offer these. Traveling across provinces just for this is really not worth it.
The attractions are scattered and the experience is simple. You can see all the core spots in 2 days. After that, it’s just boring wandering. The itinerary easily feels empty!
5. Accommodation prices are high, low travel value
Overall, Shenzhen’s cost of living is high!
Regular chain hotels and homestays raise prices noticeably during tourist seasons. Coastal accommodations have huge markups.
Food, drinks, and cultural products at attractions are expensive. The overall travel cost is high, but the experience doesn’t match. Compared to other tourist cities, the value is really not competitive.
✅ Objective summary: is Shenzhen worth visiting?
Suitable for:
Short trips to relax, sea views and photos, lovers of modern city nightscapes, shopping and food, business travelers stopping by, and those who prefer a clean city vibe!
Best travel time: October to April! Comfortable temperatures, less rain, no typhoons, perfect for travel!
Not suitable for:
Those wanting deep travel, unique scenery, local specialty food, who dislike heat and sun, seek high value, or want cultural attractions!
Honestly:
Shenzhen is perfect for living, working, and settling down, but really not ideal for long-distance tourism 😭
The scenery is beautiful and the city is great, but the travel experience, attraction uniqueness, and weather have too many drawbacks!
Once is enough to see the prosperity and the sea. I really won’t come back just to travel again!
