A Hidden Gem of Natural Luxury in the Maldives
We’ve experienced over 30 Maldivian resorts, from Four Seasons to Nautilus, Joali, Velaa, and Cheval Blanc, but this is one of the rare ones that truly amazed us.
Quick Overview:
· Best for: untouched beaches, vibrant house reef, tranquil luxury
· Avoid if: you prefer a more glam, social vibe
· Must book: Beach Retreat Villas (40, 36, 38, 39)
Six Senses Kanuhura has undergone many transformations, culminating in its 2023 reinvention as “a Maldivian island icon reborn.” Located in the Lhaviyani Atoll, a 40-minute seaplane trip from Malé, it offers something rare: expansive natural beauty and authenticity, increasingly absent in the Maldives.
Unlike the perfectly curated style of resorts like Cheval Blanc — exquisite in their own way — Kanuhura champions a subdued, laid-back philosophy. The island’s commitment to its barefoot chic ethos, intact since its opening, is evident from the first moment you arrive.
· *The Island — A Glimpse Into Natural Maldives**
Kanuhura stands out as a genuine beach paradise.
With minimal erosion, no sandbags, or barriers, you can walk the island’s entire coastline — a rarity here. Its crowning achievement is its approach to sustainability. Under Six Senses, over 3,000 kilograms of old plastic sheeting used for seagrass suppression has been removed, restoring its ecosystems. The result isn’t the artificial turquoise seen at many resorts but a lagoon teeming with life.
Special credit goes to James, the island’s marine biologist, whose expertise and dedication to conservation are remarkable. His passion adds a truly enriching dimension to the visit.
· *Accommodation — Choosing the Right Villa is Key**
Kanuhura operates almost like two resorts in one.
On one side, you have modern, sophisticated Six Senses villas near The Point. On the other, timeless Maldivian-style villas that, while well kept and updated, cater to a different aesthetic and luxury level.
The difference in design, experience, and price is significant—shaping your stay. Pro tip: Download the resort map ahead of your visit.
The standout accommodations are the (Family) Beach Retreat Villas with Pool, particularly rooms 40, 36, 38, and 39. These villas boast open views of Drift Island and the reef, blending privacy with breathtaking natural beauty. Being close to the house reef (“Coral Garden”)—one of the best we’ve encountered—allows effortless daily snorkeling adventures with turtles, manta rays, sharks, and colorful fish just steps away.
Tip: Grab snorkeling gear as soon as you arrive—you’ll need it often!
Be cautious: High-tide currents can be strong, so kids should be supervised. South-facing lagoon-side villas are better suited for families with young children, offering calm, shallow waters. However, the wider beach in some parts traps heat, making it feel warmer.
Avoid Villas 91–55 (especially 79–80) on the east side—they are near water villas with less appealing views and narrower beaches. If budget is a priority, Villas 56–51 offer great value, with open views and cooler afternoon shade, ideal for families. Overwater villas are better experienced at other Maldivian resorts.
· *Dining — Delicious, Relaxed, and Generous**
The dining options are consistently outstanding.
Key restaurants include Sip & Sand (Japanese), Bottega (Italian), and The Point (Spanish/Mexican), with Drift offering a laid-back lunch on its private island. Opt for half-board—it’s generous, with 3 starters, a main dish, and a dessert per person, including kids, and access to excellent themed dinners.
Breakfast at Marketplace is extensive, though its 10:30 a.m. close may be challenging with jet lag. A fun bonus is Scoops, the all-you-can-eat homemade ice cream spot amusingly placed near the gym—with a viewing window between the two.
· *Facilities & Activities — A Wealth of Options**
The extensive activity lineup ensures you’ll never be bored.
Even after nearly two weeks, our stay felt too short. Your butler (GEM) will provide daily schedules filled with options like snorkeling excursions, sunset cruises, marine talks, yoga, turtle encounters, and stargazing at the cinema under the stars.
The diving and snorkeling here are exceptional, thanks to the thriving house reef. Sports enthusiasts will appreciate tennis, squash (indoor courts included), and a decent gym—though parts of it feel dated. The spa is excellent, offering well-executed treatments in a serene, expansive space complete with a steam room, sauna, and plunge pool.
The kids’ club, however, feels basic—its range of activities could be more engaging.
· *Service — Warm but Needs Refinement**
Staff are friendly and genuine, though some areas could improve.
Housekeeping lacked consistency at times, and reminders were occasionally needed to clear in-room dining trays. Cleaning also felt insufficient on occasion. These are minor issues but noticeable during longer stays. The potential for world-class service is undoubtedly there, given the resort’s inherent quality.
· *Conclusion — Perfect for the Right Traveler**
If you favor highly polished settings and social hubs, Six Senses Kanuhura may seem too understated.
However, for those seeking a rare Maldives experience—unspoiled beaches without erosion barriers, a thriving reef, and a genuine feeling of space and openness—it excels with quiet self-assurance.
With the right villa and a few service improvements, this place can deliver a truly unforgettable stay.
