Detian Transnational Waterfall Scenic Spot

9.1
4.7/5
27.1k reviews
The Detian Transnational Waterfall Scenic Spot is located on the upper reaches of the Guichun River along the China-Vietnam border in Guangxi. Here, the boundary river meets a cliff, cascading down in three tiers with a width of over 200 m and a drop of more than 70 m, facing Vietnam's Ban Gioc Waterfall across the cliff. During the rainy season, the two waterfalls nearly merge into one, and their roar can be heard across the valley. This site also served as a filming location for the TV series The Journey of Flower. The highlights of the visit mostly revolve around this border river: after passing through the Detian memorial archway, known as the "transnational gate," you can take a bamboo raft from the shore to the foot of the waterfall, looking up as the curtain of water crashes down from the cliff top, with mist spraying onto your face—effectively "traveling abroad" on the border river. On the river, you'll often encounter Vietnamese locals paddling small bamboo rafts to sell coffee, dried fruit, and other goods, and the haggling adds a fun cross-border market vibe. After disembarking, follow the waterfall-viewing boardwalk and multi-level observation decks to admire the waterfall's full panorama from different heights. Boundary markers No. 53 (erected during the Qing Dynasty and inscribed with "Guangxi, China") and No. 836 are popular photo spots. Along the boardwalk, you'll also find Detian Temple, built by villagers in the 1980s to commemorate the Zhuang historical figure Nong Zhigao—worth a quick visit. The waterfall view varies significantly with water volume: during the summer peak season, the water is torrential and awe-inspiring, while it appears more delicate in the dry season; the bamboo raft dock has long queues in peak season, so it's advisable to arrive early for a close-up view of the waterfall; the rafts get quite misty, so remember to waterproof your phone and camera.Daxin · 41.6 km from downtown

Dongnayuwan Scenic Area

8.1
4.5/5
1.6k reviews
Dongnayuwan Scenic Area is nestled along the Heishui River in Chongzuo, Guangxi, upgraded from the original Anping Fairy River attraction. Surrounded by karst peaks embracing an emerald bay with continuous mountain islets and bamboo-lined banks, it's hailed as the "Alternative Li River" and "Fairy River of Guangxi," serving as a filming location for TV dramas like The Journey of Flower. The main activity here is a boat cruise through the picturesque landscape, with painted barges gliding past mountain reflections before disembarking to explore stone forests and bamboo groves—offering distinct experiences by water and land. The highlight lies in the "Eight views of Dongnayuwan": Water illusion, Guantian Farm, Swallow Cave, Xiake Trail, Longbi Beach, Waterfall Market, Aquatic Stone Maze, and Puhuang Island. Guantian Farm divides fields according to Tusi (chieftain) land systems like water-carrying fields, horse-raising fields, and sedan-chair fields—each plot's name corresponding to the farmer's role in the chieftain's household. The staggered Xiake Trail provides prime views of Longbi Beach's tiered waterfalls, where heart-shaped rapids send white dragon-like streams through rocks into the river, their intensity varying with water levels. The Aquatic Stone Maze conceals a submerged stone forest with bizarre rocks encircling pools amid bamboo shadows. Puhuang Island allegedly gained its name when the Southern Ming Emperor Yongli stayed here with his empress, once serving as the backyard garden of Anping's Tusi. The area carries deeper Tusi cultural undertones. Daxin County is renowned as the "Hometown of Chinese Tusi Culture," with the scenic area located in Anping Village—the former seat of Anping Tusi Prefecture, where ruins of Ming-Qing dynasty Tusi offices still remain on the old street. In 1637, traveler Xu Xiake documented his visit to Anping Prefecture in his travelogue. Today, traditions like Tusi welcoming ceremonies, Bayin drum music, and the Nongdong Festival continue among local Zhuang communities, some adapted into performances that travelers might encounter unexpectedly within the attraction.Daxin · 19.6 km from downtown

Mingshi rural is located on the west side of Daxin county, Chongzuo city, approx. a 1-hour drive from the famous Detian transnational waterfall attraction. Visitors often explore both attractions together. Mingshi rural features unique karst landforms with picturesque mountains surrounded by flowing water, creating exceptionally beautiful scenery. Beyond the picturesque landscapes where mountains meet waters, the attraction also features refreshingly rustic villages and farmland scenery. Visitors can enjoy bamboo rafting, photography, and sightseeing here, immersing themselves in the breathtaking views and tranquil rural life. The popular TV drama "The journey of flower" was filmed at this location, further boosting its fame. Mingshi rural covers a vast area, primarily featuring the natural river and rural scenery in the upper reaches of the Mingshi river, as well as the Mingshi rural Zhuang folk museum built in the lower reaches. Visitors can explore the area through bamboo rafting or land sightseeing, with half a day generally being suitable for the visit. Many visitors also choose to stay overnight in the attraction to leisurely enjoy the surrounding beauty and experience the freshness and tranquility of rural life. Bamboo rafting is a popular way to explore the attraction. Visitors can first reach the downstream Mingshi Rural Zhuang Folk Museum to purchase rafting tickets, where shuttle buses transport them to the starting point. The experience combines approximately 40 min of rafting with land touring for a total of over 1 hour. Each raft comes with a guide providing live commentary. Along the route, you'll admire picturesque mountain reflections resembling Guilin's iconic Yellow Cloth Shoal scenery, pass through crisscrossed farmland and tranquil villages—each unfolding rural vista offering serene delight. The endpoint of the bamboo rafting is the Mingshi Rural Zhuang Folk Museum, featuring a totem square, artificial lake scenery, Zhuang villages, chieftain residences, and cultural streets—primarily showcasing sculptures and architectural styles reflecting Zhuang customs, worth a brief visit. Additionally, Zhuang song and dance performances are frequently held here; if encountered, take a moment to enjoy them. Another way to explore is through land touring. Start by visiting the Mingshi Rural Zhuang Folk Museum, then rent a bicycle for cycling around the area. Bikes are typically available from local hotels or farm stays, and a cycling route map is provided upon rental. Several routes are available along the roads near the attraction, with the northwest direction (toward the river's upstream) being highly recommended. This route offers stunning karst landscapes and pastoral views similar to those seen during bamboo rafting. Accommodation and dining For higher-end accommodation in Mingshi Rural, Daxin Mingshi Mountain Resort is a great choice located within the attraction, offering scenic rooms with beautiful views and unique ethnic decorations. Outside the attraction, there are budget-friendly options like Daxin Mingshi Art Hotel and Mingshi Express Hotel, as well as local farmhouse stays, all with decent environments. You can choose based on your personal preferences. Meals are mostly taken at the accommodation, where you can order some authentic farmhouse dishes to taste and experience rural life.Daxin · 31.1 km from downtown

White-Headed Langur Ecological Tourism Area

4.8/5

The Guangxi White-Headed Langur Ecological Tourism Area consists of four discontinuous rocky mountain regions: the Bapen, Daling, Tuozhu, and Banli sections. Its primary conservation focus is the white-headed langur, a nationally protected animal named for its snow-white crown and leaf-based diet. Discovered and named by Chinese scholars, this primate has thrived on Earth for over 3 million years. Today, it is found only within Chongzuo's approximately 200 km² rocky terrain, with a global population of just over 1,000 individuals. It is one of the world's 25 most endangered and critically protected primates, often compared to the giant panda in scientific value, earning Chongzuo the title "Hometown of China's White-Headed Langurs." After entering the park, visitors can reach the cliffside habitats of the langurs via a 10-min shuttle ride or a few hundred meters' walk. The langurs follow a predictable routine: foraging at dawn, resting in shaded cliffs at noon, and returning to their nests before dusk along relatively fixed routes. Patient observers are often rewarded with sightings. Infants under six months old, golden-furred and clinging to their black-coated mothers, are a highlight for wildlife photographers. The area also shelters other protected species like Francois' langurs and macaques, as well as rare plants such as cycads and golden camellias. Leveraging this rocky forest ecosystem, the park conducts year-round activities like science education, ecological experiences, research expeditions, field training, and photography. Observe quietly—never feed or chase the langurs. Bring binoculars or telephoto lenses for better cliffside details, and visit at dawn or dusk (avoiding noon) for higher chances of active sightings.Chongzuo · 20 km from downtown

Ningming Huashan Rock Art Scenic Area

The Ningming Huashan Rock Art Scenic Area is located by the Ming River in Ningming County, Chongzuo, Guangxi. In 2016, the "Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art Cultural Landscape" was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and this site is the core component of that cultural landscape. On the steep limestone cliffs facing the river, dense clusters of ochre-red images painted by the ancient Luoyue people during the Warring States to Eastern Han periods can be seen. The main panel stretches over 100 m in width and dozens of meters in height, with over a thousand identifiable images, making its scale and preservation remarkably outstanding among similar rock art discoveries in China. In the local Zhuang language, this mountain is called "Bālái," meaning "the mountain with paintings." To see the rock paintings at Huashan, taking a cruise is the classic way. The boat sails on the Ming River flanked by karst peaks, offering picturesque views along the way. When approaching the cliff, look up to see images suspended dozens of meters above the river—frontal human figures with raised arms and spread legs in a frog-like squatting posture, densely covering the cliff face, interspersed with motifs like bronze drums, ring-pommel knives, ferries, and dogs. Scholars generally believe these cliff images depict sacrificial rituals of the ancient Luoyue people. Yet, why the hematite-painted patterns remain unfaded after over 2,000 years and how the ancestors climbed the high cliffs to create them remain debated. The cruise usually comes with a guide, making it far more engaging to listen to Luoyue legends while identifying the cliff images than a cursory glance. Don't rush to return after viewing the rock paintings. The traditional Zhuang villages of Laijiangtun and Bayaotun in the core area, built along mountains and rivers, are called the "living museum of rock art." Among bamboo fences, rice fields, and old houses, you can witness traditional crafts like bamboo basket weaving, Zhuang cloth making, and Zhuang embroidery, as well as taste local delicacies such as winnowing basket feasts, pounded glutinous rice cakes, and sugarcane wine. Every year on the third day of the third lunar month, the attraction hosts the Luoyue ancestor worship ceremony, with bronze drums, tianqin music, and folk songs creating a vibrant atmosphere—a perfect opportunity to experience Zhuang culture. A small tip: The rock paintings are high above the river, appearing as reddish-brown patches to the naked eye from a distance. To see the details of the figures clearly, secure a good viewing spot on the boat in advance, and bring a telephoto lens or binoculars for a more enjoyable experience.Ningming · 9.3 km from downtown

崇左太平古城景区is a cultural tourism zone rebuilt on the foundation of the former Taiping Prefecture city. Its history dates back over a thousand years to the Taiping Stockade of the Zuojiang Circuit, established during the Taiping Xingguo era of Emperor Taizong of the Song Dynasty, from which the name Taiping originates. It was reorganized as Taiping Road in the Yuan Dynasty and served as the seat of Taiping Prefecture during both the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The city walls, rammed during the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty, once encircled the city with gates, a layout that persisted for centuries. The Zuojiang River winds and loops around the city here. Surrounded by mountains and water, it resembles a gourd, which earned old Chongzuo the ancient nickname Hucheng (Pot City). Today, walking into the ancient city, you will find groups of antique-style buildings with blue bricks and black tiles spread along stone-paved alleys. The main city gate tower, ancient stage, Misty Rain Corridor, and cascading waterfalls connect the tour route, and you can also see remnants of the Ming Dynasty city walls. After nightfall, the lantern corridor and the city tower lights turn on one after another, reflecting on the river surface. Intangible cultural heritage performances, such as molten iron fireworks on the water, are also frequently staged at night.Chongzuo · 4.5 km from downtown

The experience at Dongnayu Bay far exceeded my expectations. The entire scenic area is exceptionally well-preserved, with crystal-clear waterways and lush vegetation along the way. A gentle breeze caressed my face as I walked the trails, making it incredibly pleasant. The facilities were thoughtfully designed, with well-placed rest areas and viewing platforms, eliminating any feeling of rushing. Whether you're leisurely strolling with family to enjoy the natural scenery or taking photos with friends, there are suitable spots to find. The entire experience was smooth and comfortable, without the overly commercialized noise, making it a worthwhile place to make a special trip to relax and unwind.

The scenic area presents a typical Guangxi rural landscape, with a limited number of attractions, and a full tour takes about an hour. The bamboo rafting experience is quite enjoyable, with professional and detailed explanations from the guides. The Zhuang ethnic folk song performances along the riverbank are particularly distinctive, adding to the lively and interesting experience. However, transportation within the scenic area is inconvenient, with narrow roads prone to congestion.

When we arrived, there were no monkeys. The staff specifically reminded us that tickets weren't being sold at that time, so everyone waited in the lobby for a while until the monkeys appeared before entering in groups. The policy was very considerate. The monkeys were cute and not afraid of people; you could walk right up to them to see them, which was a unique experience.

Taiping Ancient City in Chongzuo City boasts a long history, dating back to the fifth year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1372). Initially, it was built with earthen walls. In the sixth year of the Yongle reign, a major flood in the Zuojiang River caused over 400 zhang (approximately 200 meters) of the city walls to collapse. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, due to urban expansion, the ancient city was demolished and leveled, with the bricks and stones used to pave the streets. The entire scenic area revolves around themes such as Luoyue culture, Zhuang culture, water culture, and sugar culture. The inner river has been restored and expanded on its original site, and the ancient city walls have been repaired. This is a 4A-level cultural tourism scenic area, offering tourists a one-stop experience encompassing sightseeing, shopping, entertainment, dining, accommodation, and transportation, promoting the integrated development of commercial development with folk performances, technological management, and intangible cultural heritage preservation. Many Hanfu (traditional Han clothing) and ethnic costumes are available for rent for photo opportunities, making it perfect for taking pictures. Although highly commercialized, it offers a complete range of food, drinks, and entertainment. It gets very crowded on holidays; it's recommended to visit on a sunny afternoon to enjoy the beautiful sunset.

It was quite fun. We arrived right at closing time, and there were almost no people left, it felt like we had the place to ourselves. It was quite cold and slippery inside the Dragon Palace, so definitely wear pants if you come. It's also humid and hot inside the Dragon Palace, so bring a fan.

The relationship between people and scenery is also about fate. Perhaps it was because we came at the wrong time, the water was quite murky, and the waterfall here was rather small, so the scenery was rather ordinary! However, the rice paddies outside were at their most vibrant and beautiful, full of lush greenery! The coffee was alright, and the concept of Blue Cave Coffee was quite novel; turning a coffee shop into a tourist attraction was also very bold!
