Dengfeng Observatory

Dengfeng Observatory

3.7
4.6/5
65 reviews
The Observatory was built in the early Yuan Dynasty. It is the oldest astronomical observatory in my country and also an astronomical science building in the world. Guo Shoujing once re-observed the positions of the twenty-eight constellations and some other stars here, and compiled the advanced calendar at that time - the Shushi calendar. The establishment of the Observatory represented the great achievements of my country's astronomical science at that time. The front and back courtyards of the Observatory are divided into seven sections: the screen wall, the mountain gate, the hanging flower gate, the Zhougong Shadow Observation Platform, the main hall, the Observatory, and the Locust Hall. More than ten kinds of astronomical instruments are replicated and installed in the courtyard. The Observatory is a mixed brick and stone structure, consisting of two parts: the platform body and the stone gui. The platform body is square and bucket-shaped, and the four walls are made of water-ground bricks. The platform is 9.46 meters high, and the small room on the top of the platform is 12.62 meters high. The top side is more than 8 meters long, and the base side is more than 16 meters long. The four walls of the platform are obviously inclined inward to the center, and its proportion of points shows the characteristics of early Chinese architecture. The small room on the top of the platform was built during the renovation in the seventh year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty (1528 AD). There are two symmetrical steps on the north wall below the platform, from which people can climb to the top of the platform. In order to drain the rainwater on the top of the platform and the steps, a water channel hole is set at each corner of the steps, and the water outlet is carved into a stone dragon head. In the middle of the north wall of the platform, there is a groove that goes straight up and down. The east and west walls are narrowed, and the south wall is vertical up and down, 36 cm away from the south end of the stone gui. The stone gui is used to measure the length of the sun's shadow, so it is also called "the ruler of measuring the sky". Its surface is paved with 36 square bluestone slabs in succession, and the lower part is a brick base. The stone gui is 31.196 meters long, 0.53 meters wide, 0.56 meters high at the south end, and 0.62 meters high at the north end. The stone gui is in the meridian direction. There are two water channels engraved on the surface of the gui. There is a square water filling pool at the south end of the waterway, and a long strip water discharge pool at the north end. There are water discharge holes at the east and west ends of the water discharge pool. The bottom of the pool and the channel is higher in the south and lower in the north. After filling, the water can be filled into the entire channel. When not in use, the water can be discharged. At the bottom of the water discharge pool, there is a water receiving stone base, which is a rectangular east-west orientation, and a circle of water troughs is also carved on it.Dengfeng · 10.6 km from downtown

Junji Peak is the summit of Mount Song, known for its unparalleled views. After the neat and regular steps, the path in front of you suddenly turns steep. Climbing up a few such very steep ghats, you will be in front of Junji Hall. Continue to go up, and you will be in the midst of clouds where you can experience the feeling of "the summit of Mount Song, the extreme of steepness". If there happens to be a heavy fog, it even feels like the fairyland.Dengfeng · 6.3 km from downtown

Luoyang Museum

8.2
4.7/5
3.7k reviews
The Luoyang Museum was established in 1958 and fully opened to the public on April 16, 2011. It is a comprehensive museum integrating cultural relic collection, exhibition display, and social education. Its collections span the long history of Luoyang as an ancient capital of thirteen dynasties. The main building stands like a giant ding (ritual vessel), symbolizing the "establishment of the capital in Luoyang." Its solemn and majestic facade itself serves as a popular photo backdrop. The large-scale permanent exhibition "Heluo civilization" unfolds along the timeline of prehistoric times, the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, the Han and Wei dynasties, the Sui and Tang dynasties, and the Five Dynasties and Northern Song period, connecting thousands of years of Luoyang's capital history into a complete viewing experience. The treasure hall on the second floor rotates displays of representative artifacts from the collection, including the Cao Wei white jade cup, the Northern Wei clay Buddha face sculpture, and the vividly expressive Northern Wei painted pottery figurine of two women holding hands, affectionately called the "best friends figurine" by visitors, all worth pausing to admire. In the Tang tri-color ceramics hall, the rare and majestic black-glazed tri-color horse and the massive Eastern Han stone artifacts are equally popular. The palace artifacts hall displays Qing Dynasty imperial artifacts transferred from the Forbidden City, including a golden nanmu wood tower carved from a single log and adorned with gilded miniature Buddhas, exuding royal grandeur. The stone carving hall is rustic and imposing, while the Wang Xiu peony art exhibition brings Luoyang peonies into paintings, each showcasing a unique blend of strength and delicacy. You can start your visit from the "Heluo civilization" exhibition and stone carving hall on the first floor, then proceed to the second floor to explore the treasure hall, Tang tri-color glazed pottery hall, and imperial artifacts hall in detail. The treasure hall features rotating exhibitions, and the specific exhibits are subject to the on-site display. A thorough visit typically takes two to three hours, so it is recommended to allocate sufficient time. Luoyang Museum consistently organizes flexible and diverse temporary exhibitions, continuously providing the public with new cultural offerings. It has introduced exotic-themed exhibitions such as "Civilizations of Qin-Han and Rome," "Norwegian style painting exhibition," "African cultural relics and art exhibition," as well as independently curated large-scale temporary exhibitions like "The starting point of the Silk Road - the Silk Road and Luoyang" and "The hub of the Grand Canal - the Grand Canal and Luoyang," enriching the exhibition content and ensuring visitors always find something new. Adhering to its mission of reaching out, Luoyang Museum has independently or collaboratively held cultural relic exchange exhibitions in over 20 countries and regions, including the United States, France, Japan, South Korea, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, and Australia, generating positive impacts both domestically and internationally. Luoyang Museum adheres to the organic integration of collection preservation, scientific research, and social education for balanced development. Practicing a people-oriented service philosophy, it enhances integration and interaction with society while excelling in exhibition reception and educational promotion. The museum actively recruits volunteers passionate about museum education, establishes cooperative units, and extends its reach to communities, schools, rural areas, and military camps to expand its coverage and influence. Additionally, it hosts monthly traditional culture lectures to disseminate heritage knowledge and cultivate museum audiences, achieving remarkable results. Luoyang Museum boasts a team of professionals with high academic standards. It has published numerous works and collections, with over 1,000 papers and representative publications including: "Han tombs at Shaogou in Luoyang," "Luoyang tri-colored glazed pottery of the Tang dynasty," "Bronze mirrors unearthed in Luoyang," "Han dynasty murals in Luoyang," "A collection of essays commemorating the 40th anniversary of Luoyang Museum," "Cultural treasures of Luoyang," "The charm of Luoyang—highlights of archaeological achievements in the Heluo region," "A history of the ancient capital Luoyang," "Research on Western Zhou bronze ware," "Heluo civilization," and more, all widely recognized by society and academia. In the era of promoting cultural development and prosperity, Luoyang Museum is bound to play an even greater role in the construction of socialist spiritual civilization.Luoyang · 58.7 km from Dengfeng

Song Du Huangcheng Cultural Tourism Resort is located in the northern part of the old city of Kaifeng, precisely on the site of the imperial palace of the Northern Song Dynasty's Dongjing city. The millennium-old central axis of Kaifeng runs through this area, making it the core zone of the royal culture of the Song Dynasty. Here, you can find the Song-style imperial architecture of the Longting attraction, the tales of the Yang Family Generals at Tianbo Yang's residence, and the calligraphic steles of Han Yuan Stele Forest. The Shuanglong Lane historical and cultural block, 960 Cultural and Creative Park, and Qisheng Corner have transformed old streets and courtyards into Song-style blocks perfect for leisurely exploration. The resort also connects a series of Song culture attractions: Wansui Mountain Great Song Martial Arts City stages year-round martial arts live shows and intangible cultural heritage iron fireworks, while historic sites like the Iron Pagoda, Kaifeng city wall, Zhouqiao and Bian River ruins, Shanshangan Guild Hall, Yanqing Taoist Temple, and Fan Pagoda are scattered across the old city, along with niche spots like the underground wartime grain storage. These places are hard to cover in one day, so we recommend focusing on two or three key sites. After dark, a different experience awaits as the attractions light up in unison. Boarding a painted pleasure boat on the Great Song Imperial River to watch the illuminated pavilions and towers sway with the rippling water is a popular nightlife option here.China · Kaifeng

The Observatory is a tall blue brick and stone structure, consisting of a platform body and a measuring stick. The platform body is in the shape of an inverted bucket and has a history of 700 years. It is the oldest existing observatory in my country and one of the important astronomical sites in the world.

If you ask me which mountains around Zhengzhou are worth visiting, my first recommendation is Fuxi Mountain. Many people have a misconception about Fuxi Mountain, thinking it's all admission-only, but that's not true. Some attractions are free, and you can have a great time enjoying the natural scenery.

Junji Peak, located in Taishi Mountain Scenic Area in Songshan Grand Scenic Area, Dengfeng City, Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, is the highest peak of Taishi Mountain and the highest peak of Zhongyue Songshan Mountain, with an altitude of 1491.73 meters. Taishi Mountain has abrupt peaks and rugged rocks. Its unique geological structure is listed as a national geological park. The scenery of Junji Peak is unique. Going up along the neat steps, the road will suddenly become steep. After climbing several very steep mountain roads, you will arrive at Junji Palace. Junji Palace is backed by the cliffs of Songshan Mountain and has extraordinary momentum. Continue to go up and you can reach the top in more than three hours. At this time, you can experience the feeling of "Songgao Junji". There are ancient temples to visit at the foot of the mountain.

It combines a zoo and an amusement park. Suitable for children under 10. It has everything, but nothing is done exceptionally well. The price-performance ratio isn't high. At least not as good as Qingming Riverside Park or Wansui Mountain Martial Arts City. The food inside is a bit pricey.

Our guide at the Luobo Museum, Mr. Pei, was excellent. He was considerate of the artifact display cases, reminding the children in our group and others to keep a safe distance to avoid obstructing photos or leaving handprints. His explanations were engaging and detailed, although latecomers sometimes interrupted him. Overall, it was a good experience, and we saw all the museum's treasures and popular artifacts within the limited time – definitely worth it.

Overall, it's not bad. Many facilities are still under construction. The area outside the scenic spot is a bit messy, there's no proper parking lot, and there are many small, scattered vendors at the entrance, which doesn't give a good impression. The area inside the scenic spot is quite nice, and it will be a great place to visit once everything is completed.

It's very worthwhile, but it's also very crowded, which might slightly detract from the overall experience. However, the people are incredibly welcoming, and there are many beautiful spots for taking photos. The food is also affordable and inexpensive, which kids enjoy. I'll definitely go back when it's less crowded.

From Yuntaishan, we boarded a bus bound for Luoyang. The journey was long — more than four hours on the road. We left at 2:30 pm and only arrived close to 7:00 pm, which meant our first day in Luoyang was largely consumed by travel. That evening, drained from the ride, I managed only a brief visit to Yingtianmen, illuminated against the night sky.The following day was devoted entirely to two of Luoyang’s most iconic sites: the Longmen Grottoes and the White Horse Temple. After exploring the temple, we caught bus no. 58 directly to Luoyi Ancient City. By then, the hours of walking through grottoes and temple grounds had left us physically exhausted. Still, the ancient city welcomed us with free admission and a promise of cultural immersion.Dinner was taken at a basement food court along Minzhu Street. By the time we finished, night had fallen, and Luoyi Ancient City had transformed. The streets glittered with lanterns, music pulsed through the air, and the atmosphere was electric. Crowds gathered near the lake to watch 天女散花 — the “Fairy Scattering Flowers” dance performance — though we chose not to linger.Luoyi Ancient City (洛邑古城) remains one of China’s most authentic living historic districts. Here, 3,000 years of dynastic history — from the Zhou to the Ming — can still be felt in its preserved city walls, pagodas, canals, and performances. It is not simply a relic of the past, but a vibrant cultural stage where history and daily life coexist.

A guided tour is a must. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and present information clearly. Highly recommended. For exploring the origins of Chinese dynasties, museum artifacts provide powerful physical evidence, offering more than just a few words in ancient texts.
